  • A state of emergency was declared in Harlan County, KY (Southeast, KY) as every Fire department in the county worked to extinguish hundreds of acres of wildfires that has been burning since Saturday November 4th. One fire was over 600 acres. Currently there are multiple fires in Eastern, KY that have burned thousands of acres. This is hard mountainous terrain full of overgrowth and leaves. Fire crews are exhausted. Monday night into Tuesday morning fires were getting close enough to homes that first responders knocked to warn residents. The fires are believed to be accidental from debris burning. High winds and dry conditions have made things difficult for fire crews. A burn band has been issued along with the State of Emergency. There is no rain in sight for the region.
