  • My Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 has been recalled for a saftey issue that could result in potential brake failure. This of course could be very dangerous resulting in injury or death. Lucky for us, Royal Enfield of North America, and the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has this covered!
And my Dealer Baxter Cycle of Omaha let me test ride a brand new Royal Enfield Meteor 350! Tough Luck turned out to be a Blessing in disguise.
    Let's talk about it.

Royal Enfield recognised the issue some owners had experienced with the brake callipers seizing on some Interceptors, so as a precautionary measure, they committed themselves to carry out a recall. They had to go through the governing bodies of countries to ensure every owner received the invitation letter, as Royal Enfield do not have that information, especially if the original owner had sold the bike on to someone else. No need to make a big deal out of it, just book it in with your dealer and get the job done. The replacement brakes feel and perform the same as the original ones, but they don’t have the logo on them. It took some dealers a while to get stock, but eventually the issue was sorted. It has nothing to do with quality control out of the RE factory, as the issue came about when owners rode through winter, in certain countries where certain salts were used on the roads, like here in the UK. Many vehicles, have recalls for unforeseen issues which arise, RE have been quick enough to jump on the issue, and should be praised.

I absolutely agree, and everything you say is accurate. Thank you for sharing! Interesting in that the original calipers were anodized, so I am guessing it wasn't all calipers, and probably a small batch exhibited failure. This happens sometimes in large scale production of products. Since the calipers are produced and purchased from an outside vendor (Brembo), the defects, if any start there with Brembo (Brembo are excellent brakes BTW). Royal Enfield thus had to comply with responsibility as the provider of the end product. I'd guess in liability for correcting any problems, Brembo is probably taking care of the financial details. My calipers have been replaced obviously, but I do feel better about all this since I also ride on heavily treated roads were they use salt and brine.

RE Himalayan has same recall - callipers prone to seize in winter road conditions. Got letter months ago but dealer says they’re still waiting for parts.

    • @frdbecker
      @frdbecker  Před 2 lety +1

Each bike here needs to have dealership request parts on a case by case basis, and early on very few parts kits were available. I'm sure part of this is Global supply chain shortages, along with the huge number of bikes Royal Enfield and their parent company produce each year. Since my bike was not exhibiting issues I gave the dealership many months before requesting my recall repair.

It's doesn't seem like a big deal or we would have heard people getting into wrecks. The calibers are made by brembo I'd just inspector bike more often

True. It only takes a few accidents to trigger a safety recall, so Royal Enfield is doing the responsible thing.

Recalling the bikes is not a good gesture. It indicates their poor quality checks, quality control.
They had to recall the Meteor 350 bikes as there was leakage of current through the spark plug cable and it could result in a blast of the bike.
RE realized this issue and decided to recall and fix it for the bikes which are already sold before an accident happens and somebody sues the company.

To me the fact that Royal Enfield takes great effort to address mechanical and design issues quickly is a sign of a good corporate entity.
I thank you for your information on the Meteor 350 as this I did not know.
If Royal Enfield didn't take responsibility, I'd lose respect for the Brand.
Everyone I know that owns a Royal Enfield (including myself) has a admiration for their bike.
Every brand of automobile & motorcycle I have owned ends up with a few design flaws over time. Acknowledgement is key.

@@frdbecker I'm riding Royal Enfield Classic 350. I'm from India. Here every family owns at least 1 two wheeler bike. And almost 50% of them are from Royal Enfield. I have seen the quality flaws closely here.
May be quality checks are followed properly with the bikes which are exported outside of India. Here people keeps waiting for 3-6 months to get their booked bike delivered. If your search on CZcams about the issues/defects found in the Meteor 350 in India, you'll be shocked.
Still I have Meteor 350 and waiting for 3 months to get it 😃

@@sourabhthorwat In United States there is a huge shortage of many things, and motorcycles are one of them. Most showrooms are almost empty, and we also order and wait here also. India has a lot more motorcycle riders than here. How we commute is different.
I am a bit shocked to hear of quality issues in India. Workers in India take great care in doing their jobs well, and have pride in their workmanship.
I am proud to own a premium bike made in India.

@@TheRmoroni That is going to be a monumental undertaking. I am happy to know that Royal Enfield is not trying to hide from their responsibility like Ford did with the Pinto gas tank issues over financial reasons.
