I just want to address the issue of the drone flight in Victoria because I've received some comments and private messages about it! Canada has quite strict but very strange and sometimes confusing drone laws, and the instructional leaflets don't always tell you the whole picture. The drone used in Victoria was under 250 g takeoff weight, which is considered a "microdrone" in Canada. They are not restricted by all the same laws as 250g+ drones and in this case it IS in fact legal to fly such a drone in Victoria. Of course you still have to fly safely, you can't fly in a negligent or reckless manner, which is why I only flew the drone during the night when the seaplanes are not operating. Fly safe everyone! 🤓

Welcome to Canada. Pay very close attention to your charts going up the inside passage - zooming in will find those rocks ! Tides are very high , lots of tricky currents and those pesky logs are everywhere. Stay safe , warm and dry - its called the " Wet Coast " for a reason !
Yes, the king tides this time of year pull the debris of the beaches.
Also plenty of ship traffic I recall from a trip from Hanes, Alaska to Seattle on a vehicle ferry.

Logs will be a big problem until you head across the gulf at Cape Fairweather. The winter high tides will be bringing even more than usual off the beaches. It is a tough time of year to make this trip. Just keep the radio up and on 16 for traffic and notices to mariners for potential hazards. Canadian Coast Guard radio is good at getting everyone through with minimal incidents. Have fun at Seymour Narrows, plan carefully for Johnstone Straights and Queen Charlotte sound ;-}
Logs in winter, yuck. We have tons of them in Port Angeles.

There was a Canadian television series in the 1970/80s, The Beachcombers, and a lot of what they did was boat around the passages in BC and taking loose logs from the water. Some may come organically from the shore from storms, and probably many come from broken log booms.
I loved that show. We got it in Australia.

I sailed the inside passage from Bellingham to Alaska 3 times 2016 - 2018. You're going to want to get serious about your log watches in the passage and especially off of Cape Caution. Pay attention to particularly high tides as they tend to float a lot of logs that were previously stuck on shore. The trip is stunningly beautiful. Enjoy!

you know, at first i thought the name "snow" was an awkward name for the boat but after watching those clips around the 7 minute mark with its sails out, i thought, that boat looks like a snow. i think its a good name, it really won me over. that boat looks sharp, you did an amazing job with it, good job!good luck!
I get it. The mountains, snow, the reasoning of survival amid harsh natural conditions, not questioning the satisfaction of living minimally with all the simple rewards of just being. It’s a peaceful focus upon the miracles of life which require little garnishing. For me, being a Texas flatlander, it wasn’t much of a reach to want to know more about how other folks live. Y’all are pioneers of a sort, making your lives full of the elements you most cherish. Skiing has always brought me to tears of joy, untethered and soaring as best I could like a bird in flight. The fact that you guys move on trails goat like up the slopes to then carve them down with childlike glee means you get ‘it’ too. The fact that you do so via a ship of your dreams means ever so much more exuberance on display. These lives you lead are such a blessing to observe for my old spirit. I can’t thank you enough for ‘Going for it’.

I have been following a couple of other sailing vlogs, but I am finding yours so interesting. The others are warm water sailors with new boats. I love yours because you do so much for yourselves. I was raised to do things for ourselves. We grew our own veggies, hunted for meat and did all the canning and freezing for ourselves. I also live in Washington state and love the scenery you are traveling through. Thanks for all the great stories. You guys are great.

Ganges harbor is beautiful and would be a great place for you to stock up on goods on your trip to Alaska! The treehouse Café is a must stop.
These logs you saw are common near the commercial ways. The tug boats haul them between vancouver and the fraser River. Watch out!! Some of them can be 10m long and very heavy.
Also, keep distance from any of the tug boats. They haul long cables between the boat and the cargo - impossible to see! Some of the operators use bright lights and blind you if you are on their way.

I never thought of a water passage north of Canada that’s what I find so fascinating that a personal sailing vessel will be traversing this area. The inside passage tend s to be next to no wind or gales. Be aware, especially on night watch. It can get ugly fast and I have firsthand knowledge of that. 41" sloop rigged to single hand.

Bienvenue au Canada! Watch out for logs all the way to Prince Rupert. There are many streams and mighty rivers all the way up the west coast that spew logs into the ocean. Bon voyage!

We have nearly 5,000 NM cruising your intended route to Alaska in early winter. This area is heavily impacted by the warm Japanese current as far west as Anchorage. From the first landform to 40 NM inland you will seldom find snow below 1,000 feet asl. As your intent is to take Lumi to the next "pond" east and will probably not pass this way again, suggest you trade those boards for kayaks and explore this region on your way to the Bering Sea!!

I had always wondered why these Fins are crazy enough to go to Alaska in the winter, but it all makes sense now, skiing from the boat sounds incredible! you really need to get that message out there, and I think you’re going to acquire a lot of followers. great to see you getting into Canada! about the logs, Vancouver is at the inlet of the Frazier River which is the main logging transport channel for BC. Going north via the inland sea, there wont be much logging activities and no waves, although the current will be crazy at the top of Vancouver Island. On the skiing, you might want to consider taking a couple of days when you get to Anchorage and do a trip into Shugash mountains where the best powder/heli skiing in the world is based, amazing place!
I lived and sailed on the Salish sea for about 10 years. There are always logs all the way up - you only need to look at the beaches and shores. You have to keep a watch at all times. Because of the NW and SE winds the sea can be extremely rough and 8 to 10 feet swells with a lot of chop are common. If we’re getting names right it’s the Fraser river. I think Frazier was a tv show. 😂😂. Enjoy the sail, some of the best in the world.
it's so lovely when people love what they do and aren't doing it to 'beat the market' or 'do sweat equity' or show off their 'lifestyle'. it's really soothing and engaging to hear the explanations of engine issues and centre boards, and the shots of sailing are fantastic. definitely I like that you are so busy living life there's not too much either. thanks to both of you for these videos.

Hi, Welcome to Canada
A tip I learned from American customs is all food that has been processed is not considered imported. So make a salad or sandwich and it does not need to be declared.
Raw potatoes are not permitted, but a potato salad is good to go.
Also, the Tequila met an unnecessary end. Open liquor is not counted in what you are bringing in to the country. So crack the seal have a swig and it does not need to be declared. Only unopened bottles are counted.

A little over a year ago I picked up my 45 year old 30ft sail boat from Victoria. Since then I've gained some experience crossing that same border (I live in Canada, but moor my girthy girl in Point Roberts WA). I've never had a customs agent step foot on my boat. When you sail our waters regularly you get good at spotting the logs! After following this channel for a long time, it's cool seeing you both in my neck of the woods!

would a forward looking sonar help with drifting logs maybe? oh, anything floating in your path ofc, like containers etc. chances are small but disastrous if encountered in the wrong place at the wrong time

As someone who is looking to potentially buy a Garcia Nouanni myself in the coming years, your detailed videos are a truly great find, thank you very much!
I haven't watched all of your refit videos yet, so sorry if you already mention it somewhere, but I just wanted to warn you about a possible issue: in the mid-80s, not sure which build years exactly, the Nouannis and Maracujas had a construction (welding) error with the aft daggerboard box, and one Maracuja actually sank after it hit a floating object and the weld opened. Garcia supposedly contacted all owners of the models with the problem, but may not have succeeded 100%. If you don't know yet if your boat was one of those, and if the problem was fixed, better check with the previous owner and/or Garcia.

You both do great. I am a Swiss-Canadian who lived and sailed in that area a lot. Canadian Coast Guard, Radio Support etc is really great. There are excellent Books in Chartform available, to very good prices. Watch the current as you go up towards Campell River and Especially Seymore Narrows. You do great and have the proper Sailboat too. I am sailing shortly from Spain, round Cap Horn towards Vancouver Island too. Cant wait to come back Home. But I do not come Home to Justin Trudeaus Canada. I come Home to help free it from him and his WEF Minions.

Also, check the charts carefully. Currents can be used to advantage all through the Inside Passage. It’s all about the timing.
