The Bombi doesn't climb hills, it grinds them off to the right height and steps over them. Proud of you for getting that worked out. I know you still have a few things to work out, but it is going to be a capable rescue vehicle in places your others can't get to. Great job.

Without suspension, it seems like the Bombi delivers a somewhat harsh passenger ride. You may consider some to those pneumatic seats used in forklifts to improve rider comfort. We can't wait to see some epic recoveries by this exceedingly capable machine!
Also, a padded ceiling and hard hats.
Got a feeling it was only harsh because of the dunes, it would probably be pretty smooth for it's usual use case of snow recoveries. At the very least, it looked smooth the last time they used it until the wheels/axels bent out.
From the MORR videos I've watched, or other CZcamsrs operating tracked snow vehicles, I've rarely seen them do jobs or recoveries where the lack of sprung suspension , resultant harsh ride quality of the Bombi would've been a noticable issue.
Although I see no logical reason for why Matt could not or does not consider putting some kind of suspension on the Bombi.
I mean even the old pioneers prairy schooners had basic leafspring suspension on them, I doubt they travelled any quicker than it does.
@@gordonmurray3153 It's more difficult to add suspension to a tracked vehicle, as track tension will change dramatically with suspension movement, and maintaining the correct tension is what keeps the track from walking off.

Those drone shots during the test in the early morning sun were some of the best I ever recall seeing on any YT'ers videos. They were even better than some pros do for movies and TV.

I'm a photographer and believe me, there's really no better time to get those epic desert shots than the first hour of the day or the last. Colby is an ace with that drone.

Quick Info on laser temperature guns. They are calibrated to work on skin, and when reading metal, are usually reading a reflected temperature from whatever is around them. Adding a piece of masking tape to the metal will give an accurate measurement.
There's also the problem of shooting the temperature at the radiator versus wherever the temperature sending unit is located, which is in either the intake manifold, but they're more likely to be threaded into the head. I don't know how much of a difference it's likely to be, but I don't think 240° is as far off as he thinks it is. If the sending unit was threaded into the outward facing side of the radiator, then his reading is probably pretty close, but that's never where they're located.
What he really should be doing is this: If your idea of a piece of masking tape reducing the reflected heat is correct, then he needs to locate the temperature sending unit, put a single thickness of tape around its hex, and shoot the temperature there.

A little hack tip--Weld a nut on the axle caps you would normally have to use channel lock pliers to fit them.
Someone told me to weld a nut on the oil drain plug . that works good too, a 1" wrench is WAY easier to change your oil with.

Bombi plus Spud Truck will be a killer combo for quick snow/sand rescues (where appropriate). Pretty much have a rescue vehicle for every season and (almost) every reason there.

That is a wonderful piece of work there. For dry overland work, I would be tempted to bevel the sharp corners off the cleats so that they do not snag sideways on hard edges when the machine is slewed. The cleats of vintage Ransomes crawler tractors are bevelled at the edges as a hedge against them walking out of their tracks in high draw loads while slewing. The Ransomes also offered an option of rubber blocks for the cleats when working on hard surfaces. tis is also done with modern tanks to avoid tearing paved roads up or skating on hard smooth surfaces. As an experiment, you might try fitting extra partial cleats made of thick-walled black soft plastic irrigation pipe between the steel cleats for extra floatation in sand. My imagining would be for only a short section, maybe just ten cleats or so of each track to have the added cleats. That would avoid the work of a whole conversion being a failure. For better or worse, a pulse effect from better floatation and less sawing of the sand would be apparent and tell truths.

@@HVACGuyMA. I am not sure what you mean by that question. I am not all that fast on my feet mentally so something intellectual may have got past me. Maybe something got misread from my Australian way of writing. I grew up with and have repaired Ransomes crawler tractors. The Bombardier machines also use a semi-elastic roadless traction system versus firmly hinged cleats.
When shoulder clicks, it's the right torque.
That's another tool, the right torque is with the elbow.
Ow! Yes! In low pressure threaded pipe it’s a foot of wrench per inch of pipe diameter. Then about all you can push, or most of what you can pull.

Seeing the drone video of the Bombi in the dunes reminded me of the tracked vehicle in the 1960's TV show "Lost in Space". If you remember Lawrence Welk, you probably know that one.

To be pedantic since I am a mechanical engineer, WD-40 is technically a penetrant. Penetrants do contain lubricants as part of their makeup and CAN be used to lubricate; however, their main purpose is to penetrate down to the grain boundaries (material structure) to help free corrosion or any other contaminates from the material surface. This is why they are so good at freeing rusty bolts and nuts. You CAN use WD-40 to lubricate depending on the application. Example 1: You need to temporarily slide a piece of pipe inside another pipe and then permanently weld them together...WD-40 should work. Example 2: You can not find sewing machine oil to lubricate your sewing machine components and use WD-40...DO NOT...sewing machines will lock up if you use WD-40 or 3 in 1 oil. A good alternative I found when I could not find sewing machine oil was cutting board oil which I found at Home Depot. This was a good substitute because sewing machine oil and cutting board oil use very similar mineral oils as their primary ingredients. Yes I did fix a sewing machine with cutting board oil...lol. In short...all of this to say, Matt is CORRECT!
We’re in for a treat this winter! Love the sound of that thing. I drove one of those that would only turn left up a mountain with 5 ft of snow to get the Internet back up for some folks in Colorado. Unforgettable experience.

Hey Matt, I grew up in San Diego and I visited the WD40 building many times. I was always working on old stuff like bicycles and other stuff.. my dad who was an amazing engineer in his own right would take me down to the plant and they would always fill my spray bottle and my oil can whenever I wanted to. They were a very good bunch of people working there. As to the ingredients I had to promise not to divulge the ingredients. I did see them making it many times and all I could say is that it definitely is not fish oil. Who ever came up with that. Could you imagine spraying fish oil on anything? The smell will tell you it isn’t that. Personally I like the smell of it and I have used it most of my life and I am over 70 years old.

I can definitely imagine - actually, remember is a better word - spraying fish oil on stuff. My father used to use the ol' fish oil on his car - behind the hooded headlights, and inside the doors mostly. The smell was pretty bad, but it worked well and the odour dissipated completely after a couple of days. That said, it's definitely nothing like WD40.
I've smelled fish oil in old capacitors and I can confirm it's nothing like WD40. Fish oil smells exactly like you would expect it to (hideous).
@@ScottDLR Hey Scott, smelling capacitors that have failed isn’t on my to do list. Unfortunately I have many times. I was an amateur radio builder when I was in my early teens. Once a nerd, always a nerd. I have heard forever about the fish oil, anyone that has ever smelled fish oil would never say that. Everybody has an opinion.

I was told/read somewhere that it was made with fish oil way back at the start. Herring oil, I believe it was. BUT..... it isn't and hasn't been made with fish oil in quite sometime. Probably smell and cost.
And if you've ever had to clean up herring, you know that it is a dog. It really sticks to whatever it's on and is the reason why bottles of pickled Herring from Costco are banned from the pantry shelves and now stored on the garage floor, on plastic, in my house.....
Regardless, the WD-40 "It's not a lubricant" statement is always a good red flag not to fully trust the person that's spouting it. :)
The photographic composition in the dunes is absolutely first rate. I will probably watch again just to stop and admire the beautiful work.
When using that temperature gun, you have to consider the emissivity of the surface. This is the opposite of reflectivity. In fact, emissivity +reflectivity = 1. Aluminum is pretty reflective, so has a very low emissivity, and the gun will read much lower than the actual temperature. Same for shiny steel or cast iron (brake disks, probably not calipers). Paint a bit of the radiator black and you will get a much higher reading from the gun, probably higher than actual, as guns like that are typically calibrated for an emissivity of 0.6 to 0.7, while black paint is generally something like 0.8 -0.9. Exotic materials like Vantablack can exceed 0.99. A contact measurement like a thermocouple is generally much more dependable, though it can be a good bit more effort to make a good measurement.

I didn't doubt its ability for a minute. I love tracked equipment. Tracks in rocky environments make for a miserable ride. Now we need a recovery.

Maybe add brush like dust blockers over the length of the track next to the door hinches, so the tracks can't throw so much stuff forward :)
So angle them like 45° outwards, so it's pushed away from the cab :)
Even a rubber mat the length of doors that is semi flexible so you can step on it with no harm. Use something like mud flap and maybe atv coil springs welded on so they flex and bounce but you can't bend them or break them off stepping on them and hitting stuff.

WD is a pretty temporary lubricant. Dries out and goes away. Most penetrants are temporary.

Looks like you could use the seats that are in semi trucks. They have suspension built into the seats.
They don't have the room for that. They would have to raise the cab like 6+ inches.
In answer to Matt's trivia, "Turn off the bubble machine!" came from one of Stan Freberg's many comedy spoofs of famous entertainers, famous songs, and stories in the late forties and fifties. Born with a mountain of imagination, "Wunnerful, Wunnerful" was a parody of the Lawrence Welk show that was televised from the Aragon Ballroom in Venice Beach, CA. Such comedy records were frequent in those days, like "The Purple People Eater" from Sheb Wooley, and were played right along with the big name singers of the day, such as Elvis, Sinatra, & of course, Hank. In those days, all styles of music were played together on AM stations around the country. Anyone old enough to remember Lawrence Welk these days would probably also remember another Stan Freberg original for kids, "Beanie & Cecil, the Seasick Sea Serpent". And No, Lawrence never said, "Turn off the bubble machine". 🙂
Wow, two names from the past. Stan Freberg was way, *way* underrated. He was a very funny guy! I absolutely loved Beanie and Cecil! I was never a LW fan, but my parents were.
My parents often went dancing just around the corner at the Aragon Ballroom. Those were wonderful times in a different era that youngsters today don't have any idea. It looks like some amateur tried to put a video with the record, but of course that would have to be done by the current experts.
Yes, all those names you mentioned and Stan Freberg was in advertising too and came up with a commercial for a zany snack calling them "Screaming Yellow Zonkers" like a corn chip shaped like little funnels. Stan was unique and more than slightly zany like his snack commercial! Oh, and, "All right boys, turn on-ah the bubble-ah machine-ah...a one and a two-ah!" was another satire tribute to Lawrence!
My grandma loved Lawrence Welk and at her funeral we played his music and blew bubbles. 🙂

Still think a governor plus a lever for the engine speed would make more sense than a gas pedal, especially on uneven terrain.
It's just so slow that you need to set a certain speed and let it crawl through instead of modularing the power all the time, you know? It's more like a tractor with a work speed than a race car.
Bet the MCU can be switched to a governor mode instead of a power mode - so you just need to replace the gas pedal with a lever with a dampener instead of a spring.
I mean a drive shaft speed governor would be better (so if the transmission shifts it changes the engine speed to keep the vehicle speed) but engine speed governor would be at least better than constant modulation of the throttle.
Maybe the MCU got a cruise control function which you can adapt to select the speed with a lever? 🤔
Setting it up like that would make it like most zero-turn style mowers, which are honestly pretty intuitively setup in regards to controls.
Or just put the throttle on a lever like my old Massey Ferguson
@@atodaso1668 yeah, that's an improvement, but that only works fine if you go the same type of workload, in the same gear with the same incline. But this here is a gasoline engine with an automatic transmission, doing a highly variable workload, due to differences in snow depth, brake steering and also very uneven terrain.
So the speed would change all the time, meaning you need to adjust the lever all the time. Not a large improvement.
I think a governor of some kind, especially an axle speed based one would help tremendously, to remove the tedious work of adjusting the engine power all the time.
@@flurpoid yeah that's basically what I'm proposing here. Those mowers use an engine governor, so you select how fast the engine should spin instead of adjusting the fuel manually, as its the case with the Bambi right now.
Issue is, that those mowers use a variable speed transmission. So it's not comparable to a regular automatic. Meaning if you select a certain RPM you'll go basically the same speed, unless the work load is too high for the engine to handle in the mowers, in this case you obviously slow down.
But if you use gears and you select a certain engine speed, like 80% the Bambi would go faster and faster, as it shifts through the gears. So you would need to adjust the throttle even with a governor on every transmission shift.
That's why a cruise control type of governor, which adjusts the target engine speed based on the rotation of the output speed of the transmission makes more sense in this application.
@@RubenKelevra he just needs an industrial diesel engine which has the governor as standard. I dont understand Matts fetish for passenger car drivelines in heavy duty vehicles...

Its Welk. I am old enough to have watched that show in its heyday (late 1950's-early 1960's). He was of German and Russian ancestry, grew up in North Dakota, was a very accomplished musician and it was one of the most popular 'variety' shows of its time (early 1950's-early 1980's).
We kids in the family, usually went to the den to watch 'our programs' while Mom and Dad did theirs. ' Wonderful World of Disney' was the whole family Sundays.(That was after Mr. Welk's show )
We only had one TV so us kids had to watch LW with our parents, I hated it, but after was, "The NBC Sunday Mystery Movie" Columbo, Banicek, McMillian and wife, they were good

I'm a viewer in the UK. Having followed matt for the whole of this build and the wrecker and gone back and watched some of the oldest videos, its so nice to see how happy he is when he realises how nice it drives. Loving the 6x6, and can't imagine whats after that. Keep it up matt and the team!!
Use your temperature gun, externally, on the same places you did on Bombi, on a vehicle who's temperature gauge is calibrated accurately, and note the difference. You're not getting the water temp by measuring the surface near a heat exchanger.
And reflective/metal surfaces are also problematic for those IR thermometers. So even if the outside of the radiator was the same temperature as the coolant, you still wouldn't get a reliable/accurate reading.
@@ferrisr meh, as long as it's not polished, it should be good enough for what he's using it for.
@@jonnya3302 yeah, its close enough, he knows its no where near boiling under pressure which would be around 250F. Maybe even 200 I might be a little worried, unless its 110 deg outside.
I'd be more worried about reading through the mesh. The laser pointer is just a reference, not what is actually taking the measurement. The shape of the "bream" taking the measurement is a cone, widening the further you get away from the front of it.

If you're going to use the Bombi on hard ground, you may want to look into getting some summer tires for it. I've seen what asphalt does to these track tines, and it ain't pretty. Most DIY way I've seen it done if by cutting up old tires and putting strips of them on. That's what they do when they have to move snow cats around in summer.

Rhett, like just about everything else in the last 30/40 years or more, fireworks have lost their "ooomph". Ashcans and M-80s back in the 60's and early 70's were like almost a 1/8 stick of dynamite. If a lid had been put on that galvanized trashcan with an Ashcan lit in it, it would blow the lid off. If the lid were tight enough the trashcan would have a slight bulge in it. It was great to be a kid back then and have access to high performance fireworks. 6oz rockets that detonated as the fuse burnt thru the propellant were great. We used to use m-80's and Ashcans to stun minnows/shiners for bait for fishing in the streams since the fuses and the bodies of the fireworks were waterproof.
They were about 1/12 , an M100 was a tenth and M-250's were a quarter stick (black powder) in terms of noise at least.
At least in the 70's when we played with them :) Maybe it was by volume, but for sure it was not nitroglycerin ;)

I have to be honest here. I never dreamed the bombi would crawl the dunes like that. I know it’s a tracked vehicle but I honestly thought it would have WAY more trouble with the sand hills than that. It’s an animal out there, great job guys. So glad you shared the build with us.
Be advised that IR thermometers are affected by distance and surface materials, so use them as a baseline, they are not 100% accurate.

the bombi reminds me of my first vehicle when I joined the Army, lateral steering and all. Good old M577A1. Given, it weighed over 25k lbs stock. It was slow. Always had engine problems. We were towed everywhere by the other platoon's M577A1 or a CAT. Didn't have the working hydraulics for the rear ramp so we had to manually lift and lower that heavy SOB 😂. Yet it was always the place to be between exercises and missions. Could have been because it was outfitted with a bunch of American plugs and a stand alone generator that could be started without battery power which, while in a field in Germany, is priceless. Or maybe it was my sparkling personality. 😅. King of Battle, King of War!

Those shots on the dunes are so surreal looking, being from the midwest it’s really amazes me how beautiful the terrain is there!
I like the fact you are letting more people experience the most capable vehicles, I had a 60ft yacht and the first thing I did was teach everyone how in the best conditions to setup and use the equipment on the yacht for a storm and to sail slow. That was so if I ever got injured it may take longer but they could get to help.
Not sure how good the cell service is out your way where you work but a helicopter cannot fly in low visibility but your boys and others seem capable to learn how to use everything.
That LC9 all aluminum 5.3 4th generation LS V8 out of that Suburban is a monster in the Bombi!!! Chevy Suburban motors run MORR!!! Love it!!
You need to test the Bombi on the big sand hill that you all went down and almost didnt get out from. That was an epic episode!
Well done. You guys have worked really hard on this build and I'm glad to see it seemingly turn out so well. It will be interesting to see it in action on future recoveries.
The MORR videos are so addictive, great work by all. Such a great "team / Family" environment for the younger generation to grow up in. So many people could learn so much from this channel, and not only about off-road recovery.

One thing you could add to help with the sand coming in is put finders above the tracks plus it would add protection if someone where to fall out there not landing directly on the tracks. But that thing is a beast great job guys.
I agree with what the last guy said. There are a lot of things going on in the world that should be kept up on -Matt is humble. He knows a lot but doesn’t make anyone feel less because they haven’t learned what he has. It’s kind of like coming home to tune in to what they are doing.
yall should make a wooden deck on swivel wheels for the tracks when you take them off! that way they can be easily moved out of your way when working on the bombi. harbor freight has some super cheap thousand pound furniture dolleys thatd work great for the application.

The Bombi is looking good. Y’all did a lot of work along with The Layton Crew, you should all be proud.
I would suggest the suspension seat mounts they use in boats for the front seats. I also prefer CRC synthetic brake slide grease instead of anti-seize. It's waterproof, high temp, and doesn't dry out like anti-seize does. Plus it doesn't get all over you when you work with it.
LS powered Bombi is a BEAST, it really looks you got most of the bugs out

-- On snowblower axels we use winterized white grease with a blend of anti-seize. Might want to consider that.
Also I mentioned it before, but I'm a proponent for you putting escape hatches back on the top of the vehicle, a couple if possible:. Here's why: done right you can escape from them. Second, if it get's toasty hot in that thing, well, heat rises, thus you can flip them open and vent the vehicle, make it a little more comfortable. Maybe some little DC fans around the cab as well.
Otherwise that thing is awesome. Well done.

I’m glad you finally figured out what the loud clicking/snapping sound was. Even with a quarter inch wheel spacers it will probably still do it when you are hard turning.

I've really enjoyed your channel over the years. It's informative, you have a great crew and I'm impressed by how everyone has such a great, positive attitude.
I've got one safety concern. The Bombi rear fenders are a great idea... the design for the vertical stiffeners is horrible. It may not happen until winter, but someone is going to slip back there and get severely injured on those near knife edges. May suggest some round or square tubing, maybe 1-1 1/2, welded or bolted at a 30ish⁰ angle.
