Problem with dividends is that in the long run you actually are making even less than you think, because the dividend is subtracted from the company's earnings and therefore the share value decreases.

WAIT A MINUTE! Dividends are NOT free money. A $10 stock drops to $9 when it pays a $1 dividend. Most people don't realize this. If the stock later jumps to $20 remember that it would be $21 if it didn't pay out a dividend. So, I say no thanks to dividends unless you are near retirement age and need cash. Think of it as selling off your portfolio over time for cash in hand. Great if you need cash in your pocket for expenses but a wash for everybody else.

    • @debashri27

But, no. Dividends are paid from a companies earnings I.e. sales.
A company's earnings does have an impact of the price of each share. But, no... the 1$ does not come from the share being 10$.
Think of it like this, a company sells 100 products for 1$ each... and after expenses its left with 50$. And they may decided to pay out 20$ to investors. So they divide 20$/x investors.
However... the price of the company share on the stock market could be anything else. Could 10$ or a 100$ taking in other factors. But no, the dividend does not come from a stock price.
In fact, companies that don't pay Dividends even get ranked as poorer cos and it's possible for the market to reflect this.

A stock usually drop a bit after exdividend because people sell it off, not because the dividend is paid out of the stock itself.
Similarly you will often see stockprices go up a little bit before, because people are buying the stock to get the dividend (though not always).

Dividend investing is awful, there are ways to bring in more income passively taking in less risk.
