Parents were literally losing their minds during the 4 months of strictly virtually school during the start of the pandemic too 😂 That’s the kicker here. Parents think that this job is so easy and that we have zero right to be stressed but they were sure losing their shit when there was no choice but to stay at home all day with their kid and make sure they did their homework.

When I went to switch my kid’s school, there was a dad who was being talked to about why their child had 46 absents from virtual learning. 46! He looked so embarrassed. I work in daycare but I can relate! The parents don’t care at all. My kid knows better than to do any foolishness at school! “Your teacher doesn’t get paid enough for all of that and you’re in school to learn” yes ma’am!

It's not a mystery. "You don't know their home life -- be empathetic," the teacher trainers say. Yet I knew a girl who was raised like a dog in a cage until she was 12 -- rape, drugs, you name it, it was a part of her life. She had all kids of trauma and challenges, understandably. Still, she behaved decently because she was taught that the type of behavior in these stories is unacceptable. And she struggled, and the teachers were gracious -- but she made it without biting a chunk out of anyone's arm.

This lack of accountability started a long time ago. Who do you think these punks are that are stabbing people and robbing people at gunpoint? I read and saw in a drugstore in New York City about how people come, take whatever they want, then walk out the door. Store employees have been told not to do anything for fear of violence. We have people waiting in front of luxury stores for someone to come out with shopping bags. That person is attacked, their goods stolen, and often their car, as well. If the situation in the parking lot won't allow the thugs to get away with the crime, they follow the person home and do it there, often in broad daylight. Think about coordinated mob robberies at luxury stores. Do you think these people were star students? Some want to blame this type of crime on poor education by schools. I call b.s. on that. It's poor parenting.

I'm a substitiute in California. Nowadays, at least here in CA, teachers are required by law to contact social services if they have a reason to believe a child is in danger or is being abused or neglected. You are not required to investigate the situation on your own or contact the parents. You can contact social services directly, without permission from any administrator, without repercussions. You and your job are protected under the law, theoretically at least. I wouldn't doubt administrators can still pull shenanigans if they don't like you or you embarassed them because you revealed their incompetency.

Oh, I’m sure it has to do with evidence of liability, worker’s compensation issues, etc., but if a kid takes a chunk out of my arm you’re going to have to physically restrain me from getting in the ambulance and you’re dang well going to hear from my attorney if I’m fired for doing so. Maybe OSHA needs to utilize these stories to come up with some standards protecting teachers.
I was an education major as an undergraduate for 2 years, 1988-1990. I changed majors because I was already hearing parents say, “You can’t make my kid do that.” Now I get to watch my teacher husband struggle with parents and admin. So much so that he just took another teaching job beginning in the fall.
Edited to change “complaints” to “compensation.”

When I begin my teaching career in 2004, we had a yearly evaluation, that was about it! Somewhere around 2010, I believe they started doing 15 minute informal evaluations, 30 minute formal evaluations, and 5 to 7 minute walk-throughs, this is where we are in education now. And if your administrator does not like you personally, you can forget getting a good evaluation, they will find any and every excuse to give you low marks, it is quite sad. They claim that the valuations are objective but how can they be objective when they’re being done by someone that you have to work with on a daily basis. The power dynamics that the assistant principals and principals have in the education system is the reason why teachers are getting routinely abused because there’s no oversight of principals; they can run the school unchecked, and they have their minions like their assistant principals and other teachers to reinforce the abusive behavior. I think this channel is going to blow up, and all the people who are thinking about getting into education will not get into it

Kids need tougher consequences to realize why they should not hit another person, talk back to an adult or whatever the problem was. Administration is afraid of the parents. In Texas, school boards and state officials make all the rules and these people have not been in a classroom for a very long time. Teachers are not consulted about anything that counts like reconstruction of buildings when it directly affects the teachers or media device placement or what types of resources we can use or which inservice/workshops will do better for our area of teaching. We have always made sure the punishment fit the crime. I just have never been able to figure out how spanking a child could fit into any category. I suppose maybe if they laid their hands on someone else. I also was in the Army so I guess I just have a different view. I was spanked as a child (not beaten) and all it taught me was that when I was upset angry hurt or frustrated the proper response was to hit someone or something. I 1000% agree though that these kids need some form of actual discipline and consequences for their action with follow through every single time!

    • @k8bal473
      @k8bal473 Před 2 lety

The same way we tell kids they aren't allowed to drink alcohol while adults can. Part of the problem is that we keep letting children think they are on an equal footing with adults when they are not. A part of respecting authority is recognizing the authority they have over you, and recognizing you don't have the right to exercise that same level of authority.
If someone were to tell you they refused to pull over after speeding by a police car and argued they shouldn't get a ticket because the cop sped up to catch them too, most sane adults would call them crazy, because we rightfully recognize that law enforcement has a certain level of authority over regular citizens - they are allowed to speed in situations we are not allowed to.
The reason we are in this mess in education is because too many adults don't want to be authority figures to their students, but would rather be friends with them. With all of the romanticized notions that we have adopted in education over the last 30 years, we should be asking ourselves why student performance has actually worsened since removing corporal punishment from schools instead of improved.

All the parents have forgotten how much they "loved" having their little blessings at home a year. They need to go back home for a year to remind them how much they appreciate teachers. Been teaching online for 4 years. It has it's issues but WAY better than being at school.

  • @Tormekia

Teaching is one of the few jobs where getting assaulted by the people you serve is treated as a workplace hazard you're just supposed to deal with and accept. Punched, kicked, bit, spit on, who knows what else. Anywhere else that'd stuff would be treated as assault and have legal consequences. At school? It's paperwork that gets buried. Or you get blamed because you "must have done something". Yeah no. Some kids just ain't right.
Teachers should not be expected to deal with serious behavioral problems. That's not their job. Kids with those issues should be properly assessed and separated so they can be dealt with by trained professionals. You sign up to teach English, not deal with a kid who is having a psychotic episode.
We need WAY better intervention and assessment. Either it happens at the school level, or those kids wind up getting a bit older, doing that crap out in the "real world", and boom. Orange jump suit and 5-10 years.
Or worse and they do it to someone who is even more violent than they are and consequences hit them HARD.
It's so sad how little respect society has for teachers. We don't even give them the dignity of having a workplace that's physically safe. And then we demand they buy the pencils too.

These stories make my blood boil. I’m so angry hearing that these teachers didn’t get the support they should have gotten from their admin and I keep thinking about what you went through yourself, which led to you leaving the teaching profession altogether. You weren’t treated right and nor were any of these teachers. Kids are never going to learn accountability if they aren’t held accountable for their actions and they’ll grow up thinking anything they do wrong is not their fault. The worst part is theses school districts are losing good teachers who really care about their students. I can tell you were one of them. I’m sorry your school district didn’t value you or any of these other teachers like they should have. Just know that I see you and every other teacher, I see how hard you work to try to teach kids the skills they need to know so they can succeed in life. You do important work and you are appreciated and valued more than you will ever know.
Have you ever thought about writing a book about what you went through as.a teacher? I bet any book you write would be a best seller. You could title it something like “Teaching Kids Today: The Ugly Truth About What Really Goes On In the Classroom”. If you write a book, I’ll be the first in line to buy it. I’ll even ask for my local library to buy a copy. I’ve done it for another friend to help her promote her book and I’ll do it for you too.

People need to know these stories and what is happening in schools. I get the students have a right to education but what about the students that are losing out on an education to these extremely disruptive and down right dangerous students? How does that one student's rights outweigh the rights of the others? It is traumatic for the teachers and other students as well. My son used to hate going to school. It was really hard to get him up and once he got home he would breakdown and just be in a constant state of agitation. This year we pulled him to homeschool and after a couple of months his whole attitude changed. He is not agitated and constantly snapping at his brother and his anxiety levels have dropped. He is also having way fewer nightmares.
He finally started talking about a kid in his class would flip out and throw things and all the other kids would have to leave the classroom while they calmed the child down. No 1st grader should have to deal with that.

The worst part about disruptive kids is: We know they need help. We know where they can get help. We are flat out NOT ALLOWED to tell parents "hey your kid could use some behavioral resources\intervention" because if the parent follows up, the school has to pay for it. You know, out of the money we have set aside for helping kids with behavioral and learning needs...same thing if we notice a physical disability like needing glasses or hearing aids. If Admin finds out you told a parent where\how their child can get help YOU get in trouble. The system is literally set up to prevent kids AND teachers from getting help.

Lots of kids disliked him because he enforced clean shaven boys, shirts tucked in for all...he was just a hard ass or so we thought. Long story short, he was getting fired and we all had a walk out in protest. Even the trouble makers who were constantly in trouble wanted him to stay. They may have acted like they disliked him but they knew he cared for the students and was great for our school. 😆 we use to laugh at the bad tough kids who constantly ditched school because there was Mr Rendon bringing their behinds to school in his little truck. This is purposeful and created to destroy our country from the inside out. We have to take back our consent. I have found that the system protects the evil parties. I worked as a sub for nearly 5 years, until I just could not take it anymore. No support from admin, very little from classroom teachers and the kids are just atrocious. On the flip side I as the parent of a special needs son with Autism, had to pull my son out of school to homeschool him because he was being bullied by his teachers. He was called retarded, he told me one teacher would hit him upside the head, yet the school refused to investigate it. I have heard of numerous stories of teachers bullying special education students. The good teachers are leaving, and pushed out. while the bad ones are allowed to remain. Students need to be held accountable for their behavior. Teachers who abuse students and the position of authority should also be held accountable.

When my kids were in elementary I volunteered at their school a few times a week ,and I have seen first hand what these teachers deal with daily, not only from students and admin, but parents as well, it is a shame that teachers are not backed up and the kids are NEVER held accountable, case and point, there was a student who was BAD, and I mean real BAD, he was not special needs just bad, always causing trouble, one day he threatened his teacher (he was in my child's class) saying he was going to kill her, yes you read that right.. started throwing desks and other objects, hit her in the head with a book he threw, he somehow he ended up outside the class, and she locked the door and put a table up against it, meanwhile he's ripping stuff off the walls banging on the door broke the glass on the door, screaming at other teachers and threatening to shoot them all up.. all this kid got was a 2 day suspension, I and several other parents with kids in that class, called the school board, and our concerns and comments fell on deaf ears, we were told they couldn't take his right away to learn..really??!!! This incident was icing on the cake and we pulled our kids from public school, for oh so many other reasons as well. The teacher had asked he be removed from her class, and they told her there was nowhere else for him to go. So he was allowed to come back into this class.
