Designing a sad robot (by folding paper)

- I wanted to make a robot, but there are so many ways to do that! In the past, tackling projects with vague goals has left me aimlessly meandering. I wanted to avoid that this time, so I created a silly little limitation to help guide me: the robot I design has to be something I can build out of paper in the real world.
In this video I used Blender, the Paper Model add-on, Rebelle 7, and Substance Designer, Substance Painter, and Substance Sampler.
Thanks for watching :)

I'm having an absolute blast
I was indeed having a blast 😅 also your bot was hired on to a construction company crew to do all their paperwork and accounting but he's always daydreaming about all of the heavyweight robots building the skyscrapers, the theme parks, the museums, the airports and just seeing how much they contribute to the world. With this wandering attention, he commonly makes accounting errors. The reason that he ends up being placed in this position is because he cannot lift more than 25 lb with the type of joint mechanism. He has (the zigzag parts) but through trial and error and life lessons he finds himself placed in a home with a single mom and a granddad as well as two kids and a cat. The amount of weight he can carry is perfect for getting the cookie jar off the fridge. The amount of daydreaming he has is perfect for the development of the children's imaginations. The amount of pride and companionship exchanged amongst this family in raising the people who will one day use those colossal builds is the perfect amount of contribution to the world. He has found his place. Also, he gets into shenanigans with the kids because he looks like a 10-year-old lol but he also is programmed to make sure everything winds up okay in the end
beautiful 🥲
what a wonderful comment :)
Fry seems like although he'd suck at fast food, he'd be fantastic in a store retail environment with his stretchy limbs being able to reach high places
The arms would be far too weak to carry heavy things. If he worked at a warehouse, I imagine his arms stretching thin across the room as he pulls the heavy boxes behind him. But I think he would rock as a house painter. Imagine the robotic precision combined with those long arms!
He’d be pretty good at swimming around, probably. He just has that look about him. That fish look.
Watching this video made me feel hopeful that analog and digital media can coexist and produce something fun and wonderful ❤ oh almost forgot...i remember reading this thing somewhere that constraints actually help us become more creative = necessity is the mother of invention and because we have a set of rules, we have a stronger sense of direction on what to play around with and i think this is good example of that... keep up the good work :))
Whenever I'm feeling unmotivated in my own art, I watch your videos! Even though we work different mediums, you have taught me different techniques and perspectives that I can use in my art! ❤❤❤
I love this! Thanks for watching 😁
now in love with this silly fish robot and with this channel, i am indeed blasting
I really like your video! For the accordion, you can take two strips of paper and fold them alternately to make an accordion that can fold in all directions while remaining thick from all points of view. You can easily find a tutorial online using the key words "Coiling Paper Chain" or "accordion folding paper chain". All the best ❤
dont let him cook
the robot should have a job as a painter that paints potraits, but hes bad at it because his springy arms keep moving in ways he doesnt want them to.
portrait painting would be a struggle for this little guy!!
I think he should really work at a mc Donald’s drive through, i’ll leave the creative backstory to you, but i think it’s fitting.
I am so inspired by your artwork. Keep doing what you’re doing!
A lot of work and questioning to reach your goal. Very inspirational! Thanks for the video and your time
Thanks for watching!!
The blast I'm having is absolute
This guy would be an adorable "wacky physics" video game protagonist. Also, maybe origami/kirigami techniques would help with the hand design, if you want a finger shape that isn't crinkle cut?
I love this idea!
Love your content. Learning so much. So inspiring.
So cool!
He is adorable!
so flippin sick
If you don't like the accordion fingers you could give him some mitten hands
That's a boxing robot! Cause he's kinda boxy, you know)
I don't know much about boxing, but I imagine the springy arms would help!
@codygindy Enjoyed that you gave yourself limitations when designing the character.
To your question about what job he may be bad at what about being a chef? You could make it that he is not good at cooking from him possibly having bad coordination with his limbs.
Engagement comment!!!! You deserve more views
Such a big fan of your style/experiments! I really like how you seem to be focusing on making everything feel tactile
Thank you! 😁🤖
love this and the fish face robot (who definitely works in hospitality)
Cody, I'm having an absolute blast watching this video...
I LIVE FOR YOUR CONTENT 🎉
Great stuff man. Subscribed after your last video, and had a blast with this one. Super high quality, excited to see more soon!
Thanks so much!
What a nice little man! We need to think of a name
Love this video! As someone who doesn't watch many tutorials anymore, I like that this is a more quick walk through of your process and thinking, while still being accessible to any level of 3D artist. I think a potential solution to the robot's paneling could be some sort of paper mache with super intentional rectangles of sticky paper placed over each other. Might work, might not.
A video idea for you in the future (could be long form or short form): A more step by step guide on the paper folding addon in Blender. I had no idea that was in there! If its super simple, maybe just a tik tok of how you do it from start to finish.
Great vids as always! I would luv to see how u would explain rigging in blender cause I have no idea lol
Love ur videos!!!
Thank you!!
Currently blasting
love this fishy boii
Great video! Hope for more
Thanks!
как же это мило... я в восторге ❤
i think he could be a great bad surgeon with his little accordion fingers lol
He works on a boat but he isn’t very good at it because he’s scared of water
He’d be rather good at fixing wiring with his very long arms
He looks like an overwhelmed robot soldier that just found out he is going to be airdropped to fight the humans rather than pursue his true life passions
He's not cut out for war!
He looks like a fish, and that's a compliment. My username means is about Fishness and not selfishness.
nothing mean about comparing him to the mighty grouper........
Fish fingers
gamecube paper robot
🤖
He's very obviously a terrible hairdresser, every time he makes a cut with the scissors his concertina arms sproing and wobble so he messes it up. What a fun pathetic little guy though.
I'm having an absolute blast
