  • Step by step disassembly and rebuild of a PWK38 Keihin carburetor , filmed in ultra close up detail. Includes some manufacturer recomended settings for the throttle position sensor and power solenoid valve .
    The rebuild kit used in this video is from Moose Racing , kit number # 1003-0798.
    Know that I am not a mechanic and this video is for entertainment and general information only and was created to help others and myself to " TRyan Learn" some basic motorcycle DIY. Because when we stop learning we start dying.

    I tried cleaning my carb a few years ago, still ran weird. High idle when hot, did not seem to have a lot of top end. Finally got a rebuild kit, found it had some smaller jets and the tps reads backwards. Great video, no bs or fluff. Now for a new tps and see how it runs now

    Its important to note the needle setting. Why? How do you know what it is supposed to be? Maybe someone worked on before you and didn't have a clue of what they were doing and whacked it all out. I have found that most are of these are between 3/4 and 1.5 turns out. Anything more or less and you likely have any issue someplace else. But who knows? Check a manual, it may have the proper setting or it may not. All that said, good channel and good info, like it! Thanks for posting.

      The assumption was that the setting was correct pre dissassembly .Of course there is always adjustments to be made depending on many different factors .Its unreasonable for me to suggest any one particular setting would work for everyone . Thats why I said to note the setting .

    My 2023 yz250x is fouling plugs left and right. It only has 2 hours of break in. Jetting is off. But I need to find a recipe to fix it. Some say use #40 power jet. I've been running 32.1 and I'm sticking with that mix. I know changing ratios won't fix jetting. I'm at sea level to 2500 ft elevation at max for some trails out here. Nothing too cold. 50f to 85f.

      Hi @justobservenow3480 . You have a very nice machine to ride ,thats for sure Brand new with only a couple of hours on it .From sea level to 2500 ft is a considerable range to cover but I'm sure you can find the right set up with a little patience . I'm not well versed in proper jetting combinations and can tell you its a bit of a black art for most .The best advice I have is for you to talk to guys in the race crowd who ride in your area and ask what the're set up is .You can be certain they would have tried every set up out there and likely have it dialed in perfectly .     Actually, you missed a step. Little do many people know this, but there is a gasket underneath the jet block on all PWK carbs. The jet block gasket can age over time, or if too much carb cleaner is used, and gives a rich condition at idle because the gasket separates the main jet from the pilot. Keihin specifically notes not to remove the jet block because it believes users cannot install it correctly.

    Best carb vid I've seen yet. Carbs are frustrating. Especially this one. Even you are missing a lot why don't you talk about how the new jets have no numbers on them...no new seal on that throttle position sensor... because they don't give you one. You didn't touch that "mid body" part why? There's a springy thing on top of the jet needle skipped right over that too.

      Thanks very much Jameson ,I appreciate your input .I had no idea there were so many omisions I'm just Try'an to learn as I go and share the info to help others ,so I guess, as you point out I've got lots to learn .Your obvious depth of expertise with this carb lead me to look at your channel for insight and examples on how I might improve .I don't want to use words like underwhelming and regrettable so I'll just say disappointing . There was'nt a whole lot to work with there .I guess real knowledge is to know the extent of ones own ignorance . Side note ,,,I'm sure you've been asked this before having the last name Kruger ,,,but are you related to Dunning in any way ?       @TRyan Learn Bikes I'm just trying to build this carb and do it right. Don't write me off as a troll. I'm building the carb right now. So forget about the jet block o rings and throttle position sensor o rings? That's "in depth".. I can't post content on building bikes till I learn how to do it and yall leaving me confused and frustrated. Dunning and Kruger are two people not related.

    Appreciate your knowledge and your ability to make it simple. One question.. I ordered the same moose kit for my yz 250 and there was a tiny little O-ring (i also saw it in your kit) and for the life of me I cant figure out where it's supposed to go. It's bigger that the air screw o-ring but smaller than the float bolt o-ring. Did you end up not using it? I also didn't have one when I disassembled the carb. I am stressing that I forgot something. Thank you so much my friend!

      Hi James .That particular "o" ring isn't something that sticks out in my mind at this time.I will have to re visit the rebuild steps and see if we can nail it down .You have me curious now as to what that might be all about I will get back to you when I get it figured out .Thanks for raising a great question .

      @@jamesr6277 Ok James I've had a chance to investigate a bit on this "o" ring . While I didn't address it in the video I think it may be the one that fits on the base of the power jet solenoid . In the video I noticed I could see it still mounted to the solenoid when I dumped out the new bag of parts ,while the other two old "o" rings for the air screw and the float bowl bolt were visable on the table in the layout of parts . I should have made a point of showing that one getting replaced .Thanks for bringing it to my attention .Hope this helps .Cheers my friend .

    I must do this to my '04. As soon as I deactivate the choke, the bike revs to the sky as if the gas is turned off. Maybe the main jet? IDK.

      Hey Mike ,Yes it might be a good idea to get inside that carburetor ,have a look around for anything obvious and give it a good cleaning .Also maybe take a look at the rubber boot where your carb meets the reeds and check for any cracks or gaps in the rubber .If air can get in there it'll certainly be hard to get it to run smoothly .Good luck and if you get a chance let me know what you find and how you solved the problem .Also thanks very much for subscribing to my channel ,much appreciated .Cheers ,good sir !

    This is a great video!! I have a 04 yz250, that just pours gas out of the over flows. I've rebuilt it and it still just pours out, the float height seems right and i changed the float needle valve and the seat looks fine.. I can't figure it out. Any help??

      Hi Joe , I had a similar problem with an older RM250 . There was an issue with the actual float itself .It was a hollow plastic type that had a crack in it and filled up with fuel when gas was introduced into the bowl .So it didn't float anymore and wouldn't raise up to close the needle valve . Even some of the newer solid types can become corrupt and fail to float properly when required . So maybe check to see if the float is 100% bouyant . If you get a chance let me know if thats the case and you were able to fix it . Good luck

    Did u stick the tps in the bath too? I have same carb tps is sticking on WOT, checks out got just hangs up top sometimes can it be cleaned out? Thanks man awesome video subbed.

      Hi @SoCalMisfit712 .I did not put the TPS in the untrasonic cleaner bath . It was free of any hangups and seemed to function correctly so I didnt want to mess with it . They dont seem to be a device that is easily dissasembled so Im not to sure about trying to get inside to have a look around .Having said that if the cost of a new one wasn't rediculous I might be tempted to throw caution to the wind and have a try . Sorry I couldnt offer a better solution .Let me know what path you take I'd be curious to hear how you tackle this one . It would make a great video for you to put out there because I'm sure you aren't the first guy to have a TPS issue like this . You might get a ton of views on it .I see you have a pretty cool channel man with some great fishing videos ,really good stuff .       @@TRyanLearnBikes cool man thanks. It is soaking in wd40. The carb is propped on its side and the slide is holding it as far as open as possible. Checked and the numbers are still good so I’ll let it soak for a while and see how she goes. Just after an hr it seems to be better.

    On that throttle position assembly there's an oval-shaped gasket. My kit didn't have one and it doesn't look like you did either. Did you re-use the old gasket, or stretch a circular one? I'm not really seeing any matching ones in kits online.

    Hello, should the tps guide lever return to the bottom position on its own? My tps lever seems to stay up and not return. Is the return spring in the lever assembly or in the tps sensor itself? Thanks. Helpful video

      Hi Eric ,I have not disassembled the TPS mechanism before and cant tell you for certain how its sprung .I checked my shop manual for any info and it did not reveal the internals at all .But the fact your does not return to its expected position would indicate you need to take it apart and have a look .I suspect the spring is part of the lever not the sensor itself . If you get a chance please let me know what you find I'd be interested to hear how your repair goes .Good luck .Cheers

      @@TRyanLearnBikes I just took it apart tonight. Looks like the spring mechanism is inside the sensor itself and the lever assembly just spins. It was tough to figure out since the manual doesn't make it clear, and most videos don't show this part specifically. Thanks for the response! I think mine was installed incorrectly by previous owner, I just repositioned the tps and lever interface and it springs back now.

    Hey Ryan, great video man. I can also appreciate you responding to all the comments, that’s time and dedication. Quick question, I have this exact carb and went to do a rebuild and found the worst, “JET BLOCK” is cracked and doesn’t sit flush inside carb anymore.
    I see pwk and pwm carbs, but is there any part number you may have or website to track down this specific carb tps and fuel solenoid included as the other carbs or “upgraded” carbs do not come with these electronics! Thanks for your help sir!

      Hey there good sir. Sorry to hear about your messed up carb .Regarding trying to find specific parts for that carb I have typically had success using a parts finder option at my local yamaha dealers website. Most dealers have a similar set up .I found this part number for the
      TPS. 5NX85885-00-00
      And
      Fuel Solenoid. 5NX1410H-00-00

    hey! Does your needle have a little bit of slack or is it just mine? I feel like it should be tighter somehow, but im not sure

      There will be a little movement with the needle in the slider, just not in the up or down direction,the circlip and plate should keep it in the vertical position perfectly.But a little bit of side wiggle is normal.

    What size are the two screws where your throttle cable threads into? (The two very top Phillips)

      I think its part number 98502-04012-00 .They are a pan head screw 4mm in diameter and 12 mm in length. Hope that helps

      I have a 2005 yz250 two stroke with a keihin carb. Does this have a spring loaded cable holder? I think the last time I rebuilt my carburetor I lost it because when I put it all back together and rode it, the needle bent the first 2 mins of riding.

      Typically that carb would have a spring that fits inside the slide and is captured when you screw the cap down onto the carb body .It should provide enough spring pressure to snap your carb closed when the throttle is released. It also pushes down onto a plate that traps your needle in position. So I imagine it is possible that without that spring the needle could have possibly moved around enough to misalign and get bent .I'm guessing that since you discovered the bent needle it would have been obvious there is no spring inside the carb .Is that correct?

    I picked up a 1996 YZ250 and it has this Carburator with the TPS sensor and power jet solinoid. Should that work for my old bike. 1996 didnt have any of that stuff

      Now thats a good question.. Without the electrical inputs available optimal performance would be lost .But I'm guessing there should be a degree of functionality you may be able to exploit .I don't have a solid answer to give you .I would certainly try it .If you do ,let me know how it plays out I'd be quite interested to hear about the experience. It might make a great video if you had the time to shoot it and put it out there .I bet others would like to hear about your story too.

      @@michaelcalderon4401 Hey Michael I think it goes like this .When there is power to the power jet solenoid it is closed which leans out the jetting for more overrev.When there is no power to the power jet solenoid it is open and fuel flows through the circuit making it richer for a stronger midrange .The ignition uses the RPM and the throttle position sensor to control the opening and closing of the power jet solenoid .So with no power supplied to the power jet solenoid( because you'd have nowhere to plug it in , your bike would likley run a little rich at high RPM but be ok everywhere else .If you do end up trying it out let me know how it played out .Good luck.     hi Ryan (assume thats your name...) i recently picked up a 2017 yz250x and went out riding for a day, and have some tuning questions. Bike seems to have pretty good power and throttle response throughout the rpm but i don't really have anything to compare it to. i noticed that after the bike was warmed up, it still smoked a bit. my friend took it up a large sand hill in first gear, so it was revving fairly high and was smoking a fair amount. later i took it up a steeper hill in 3rd in lower rpm and it started to smoke a bit when i got on it near the bottom of the hill. at days end there was a 6" spooge dribble down the pipe.
    i have a rudimentary understanding of my carb and the various circuits. my predicament is; it starts first kick, i'm not fouling plugs, and power seems good, so is it worth trying to dial in my carb? and if it is worthwhile (i kind of want to try) do you have any suggestion on which circuit to start with? if you'd be willing to watch i have videos of the 1st gear hill and 3rd gear hill i can post. i'm weary of leaning out the wrong circuit and creating more problems. or is the solution just trial and error?
    i've also seen variation in the owners manual on when the powerjet is active; some say it opens from 0-1/2 throttle, while mine says it opens from 1/2-full. all seem to say it closes after 8500rpm. any idea if yamaha is actually changing when it opens?

      Hey Benny .I'm not a carb tuning expert by any stretch of the imagination. But when you say your bike starts first kick ,doesn't foul plugs and has decent throttle response....man that sound great to me . I wouldn't mess with anything..Oily goo out of the exhaust is kind of normal, two strokes are a bit drippy .Typically the power valves get sluggish and sticky with lots of hours on the engine and then you can get a bit more smoke and oil happening. Plus the type of oil and your ratio plays a big part too.But man sounds like you have a sweet machine. I'd just go ride it and have fun .Those bikes are quite a handful. I wouldn't worry about trying to maximize horse power too much ..its a fine line between max power and a blown engine. I'd certainly take a look at any vids you want to post .I'll show the guys at the shop and they can maybe give you some more insight. In the meantime have fun on that whip of yours and enjoy ..cheers 🍻
