the definite winner is the sarasa mark on- it has LITERALLY saved my career as a student. I was disappointed in sarasa with the normal sarasa black gel pens, but then came across this one at a stationary store and decided to try it out. SAVED MY LIFE- i hope sarasa makes colored mark ons!
I have some Pentel EnerGels and a couple of Tombow Fudenosuke brush pens. I'll have to remember that they pair well with Zebra Mildliners. I have a 15-color set of Mildliners, but the funny thing is I use them way more for coloring than for highlighting.
i feel like the paper is really important too. on my rhodia dotted paper i can highlight my fountain pens and my pilot coleto with 0 smudging, but on my tomoe river hobonichi, even if the ink is completely dry to the touch, the fountain pen will smear a little bit and the coleto will smear significantly
I'm gonna be completely honest with everyone the uni-ball eye was not intended to be bought by me but my father bought it once and I tried it now I'm freaking obsessed with it, I have a whole separate pen holder for them (yes that's how much I loved them). I highly recommend it for every single student out there 👍🏻
I wish the Zebra Sarasa Mark On pens would come in a larger variety of colors. I prefer the Hi Tec C pens over the uniball pens. I have used my mildliners for my planners and write over them with either my Staedtler triplus fine liners (lucky they are so cheap here in EU) and the Hi Tec C Colleto, I have the full set in the 0.38 tip size.
I have no idea if Pentel uses a different ink formula in the Energel Clena, but I swear you can highlight and write at the same time with that! (Regular Energel, needletip, 0.5 is fantastic as well, just give it a second or two on some papers.) It might also be that my Clenas (I love them so much) are 0.4 so the smaller ball may enable it to dry faster.
I use the Faber-Castell textliner super gel. It never smears or bleeds through printer paper. The best highlighter but only has a limited amount of colours.
Nice Timex cameo at 1:15! 😄 Sarasa MarkOn is the only pen I trust w/ the Mildliners any more. My favorite pen for using in my planner(s). Meanwhile, I've been slowly switching from Mildliners to Iconic 2-way marker pens because they seem to smear less (Shhhh! Don't tell my Mildliners I'm phasing them out. 😜)

I just got my first-ever order of Japanese stationery :) and I love everything so much!! The Sarasa Nano 0.30 is amazing. I didn't think I would like such a delicate line, but wanted to compare it to the 0.5 and 0.7. It writes like butter- no friction between the pen and paper ! The MD Paper Pad by Midori is so luxurious- it's the writing paper I have been waiting for my whole life- I never want to be without it, Ever! And finally, the Nakabayashi Sakutto Hikigiri Scissors- fluorine coated- are the most amazing scissors since Fiskars produced the "cardboard cutting scissor", it's probably where Fiskars got the idea ;)
Sadly, uni jetstream is not dark enough and not as smooth as i want it to be. Especially it's a little pricey for a ballpoint pen, i could buy cheaper ballpoint with same ink quality.
The sharpie S Gel is amazing and has almost retired my Pentel EnerGel pens. The ink is much darker and it can be highlighted almost right away. The only time I use my EnerGels now is when I need a . 3mm line. If the sharpie S Gel came in . 3 or . 38 and offered refills I would never use the EnerGels again.
Great choice, that is underappreciated. I have that beautiful red metallic barrel they had during the holidays among the regular fine in black and blue. I love a comfortable barrel, which is why my favorite is a signo .5 in a sarasa clip barrel.

nothing makes me sadder than mildliners smearing MUJI pens, and pretty badly. But then Muji pens smear with MUJI HIGHLIGHTERS…
The Zebra Sarasa Mark-On is the greatest gel pen ever made. I just wish a few more colors were available!

I love my Frixion Ball slim 0.38. Doesn't smudge at all under mildliners PLUS it's erasable! Win win!

The method I use...highlight, then write on the highlighted mark. (Since I use highlighters as a way to color code my notes.)
