Crimson/red clover cover crop in between. It'll choke out the weeds and add nitrogen.
I only put up the choir after I see the shoots. Let them determine the spacing they will need, not our desire to be tidy. You're doing great bud!
Let me first say I dont grow hops, so take this with a grain of salt. If you want to line up the top with the bottom, you could try a plumb Bob - weight on a string with a sharp point on the weight. Could also try a key ring or maybe a carabine to slide the plumb Bob in the top cable. A bucket of oil with the weight suspended in the oil will help keep the Bob from swinging in the wind too much.
Just food for thought. I appreciate the channel, thanks.
John this is video I've been waiting for. I can't wait for video number 3 also. I love growing hops but I too am a novice (actually more of a beginner) with only 4 plants it's more of a hobby, but I have to say your the reason i started growing hops, that and I love beer.
If you could do it again would you consider putting down landscape fabric/stone and burning holes where you want the hop plant to come up?
Cool channel man! Never tried to grow hops, In fact i've never seen them being grown before!
Finally HOPS! Why don't you run the chickens in the hop yard? For hard to manage areas, I use a flame weeder, but make a fire ring with metal flashing to shield the desirable plants from the heat. Thanks for sharing.
Nice new fresh topic, I like it!
New content love it and looked into growing in SWFL but dont think it would work. You never know till you research it.
How big of a hop yard do you have?
Wouldn’t wood chips help control your weeding?
They help a bit, but you have to go very thick in order to keep the weeds down. Then there’s the worry that they lock up nitrogen and they can be acidic.
Cut the beard back, nice cleaner look. Great initial discussion on Hops; look forward to the rest.
Why don’t you run low chicken tractors at the base to eat the weeds and stuff? Or rabbit cages? Or dwarf goats or something. Lol
