  • In this powerful testimony, Michele Hanash, Director of Policy and Women's Programs at AHA Foundation, advocates for the passage of SB359 to end child marriage in New Hampshire. She shares heartbreaking stories of individuals fleeing forced marriages across the U.S., underscoring the urgent need to eliminate dangerous loopholes that permit children to be entered into marriage. Ms. Hanash addresses misconceptions about the necessity of marriage and highlights the detrimental impact of financial dependency as a justification for child marriage. Drawing on her expertise, she urges legislators to prioritize the protection of vulnerable children and pass this crucial legislation without delay.

HEADLINE#1: GOP lawmaker complains new marriage bill would make 'ripe and fertile' teens get abortions
QUOTE: During a debate in the New Hampshire House of Representatives this week, Republican state Rep. Jess Edwards voiced his opposition to a bill setting the minimum age of marriage to 18 - because it would induce "ripe and fertile" 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds to have more abortions instead of settling down and having a family.
The remarks were reported by the New Hampshire Bulletin, following extensive and spirited debate that ultimately saw the bill pass the state house. The legislation would replace current state law that allows 16- and 17-year-olds to get married if they have the consent of a guardian.
"If we continually restrict the freedom of marriage as a legitimate social option, when we do this to people who are a ripe, fertile age and may have a pregnancy and a baby involved, are we not in fact making abortion a much more desirable alternative, when marriage might be the right solution for some freedom-loving couples?" said Edwards. (...)
"This is the frickin' mentality that we have to deal with in New Hampshire. Children (girls) should be allowed to get married because they are 'ripe and fertile,'" wrote state Rep. Wendy Thomas. "Looking for groomers? Look no further."
"I’m tired of being called a groomer when Republicans are the ones fantasizing about 'fertile' teenagers and demanding legal child marriage," wrote fellow state Rep. Alissandra Murray, an openly transgender and nonbinary community organizer who has worked on abortion access. "Anyway, they lost - once Sununu signs SB 359, child marriage will finally be illegal in the state of NH."
"Females are walking fertile vessels to these creeps," wrote local special educator Lea Benson.

HEADLINE#2: Teen Helps Pass New Hampshire Law Raising Minimum Marriage Age From 13 to 16
WHAT? The legal age for a girl to marry was 13 before 2019? I thought child marriage was only legal in backward nations like Africa and the Middle East. This was barbaric, and raising it to 16 was not much of an improvement. Let the teenagers get out of high school before they start playing house, dammit.
'Senator' Edwards is just slimy and creepy as hell. If I was the mother of a daughter, and that SKANK lived in the same county, I'd move to ANOTHER STATE.
"... freedom-loving couples..." ? I doubt that senator means horny adolescent boys who are immature and have no idea what they're getting into when they make a baby? I have the distinct impression he wants the "marriage" age to remain low because it makes the legal age of consent for sex lower, so that FISHING MINOR GIRLS FOR SEX is legal for someone his age.
Excuse me, I have to go throw up now.

@@sandburgmartin7947 The republican lawmakers are correct. Making child marriage illegal will probably increase the rates that young girls have abortion and it will increase the criminalization of men. Add to the rolls of the sex offender registries, which does nothing to help society. How is it ethical to pressure a young girl to have an abortion? Society makes me sick to my stomach.
