  • Today, I'm turning this declining Prostrata Juniper into a presentable cascade bonsai. This Juniper declined because I didn't use the proper soil mix and I didn't water it well. Now, we're going to redo it, make use of the dead branches, and transform it into a beautiful cascade bonsai. We'll go over principles such as: how to orient a tree, designing, styling, and cleaning up the branches to achieve our vision.

    I did this with an Elm of mine. I was very upset when the top died. It had been a beautiful tree. I kept the trunk and have grown the lower branches. Its starting to look quite special again now. Its refreshing to see you dealing with similar issues. Thank you for your masterful teaching ❤

    Goodmorning Dr.Chang, i'm your big fan from Italy. I would very much like it if you could also tell us about how your passion for bonsai was born. In a video you say it's like a meditation because your job was very demanding, but I'd like to know more..for example what was your first bonsai or which plant is you most attached to..in short, the beginning of your bonsai journey. I really like to deepen the bonsaists as well as bonsai .. I apologize if I have been intrusive, have a nice day😊

      It started with a small Chinese elm bonsai my father and I made when I was approximately 10 years old. Then I left HK for college in the US when I was about 19. That bonsai in my memory is a link to my father.
      Then I joined a startup company soon after I got out of graduate school. We worked very hard and it was stressful, because we started with a very small amount of capital. Taking time to care for bonsai is very nurturing for me and enables me to “keep my sanity.”
      Now I want to promote bonsai as a partial solution to address the mental health issues we have today. Not only that, it builds community relationships when there is so much hatred between races…that really should not be there.
      Beyond that, I feel the Bonsai Heirloom community can make a difference in art creativity. Bonsai has been more of a craft. Trying to duplicate what people came before us did. There are many great Italian Masters…hope you become one to carry the torch!
      Thanks for asking.

    Last year I had a crotch break while trying to bend a branch on a Japanese White Pine that was given to me by my college English professor's Japanese gardener about 40 years ago. I wrapped it in place with that stretchy green florist tape and somewhat to my surprise it has recovered. That tape helps to keep moisture in, and it is more stretchy and I think easier to work with than electrical tape. Because of the stretch it also gently ties the branch in place very nicely, so no string is required.

    Mr. Chang, i really would like to know about yamadori care, when to hunt for and how to take care of them?

    • @bonsaiheirloom
      @bonsaiheirloom  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Hi there! I don't do yamadori anymore to leave trees for future generations to enjoy. However, I do "yadori" which is where I collect trees from private land, such as digging up trees from my own garden.
      Ideally dig tree over time by digging a section at a time for fibrous roots to develop. Ideally dig the tree in the spring and plant it in porous medium retaining as much root as possible, and remove as much of the branches that you are not going to use in your design.
      Firm the soil well multiple times to retain water; keep the tree in shade or partial shade, and kept moist. Work on the tree only after it is well established.
      Here is a video of me doing this step-by-step: czcams.com/video/7pCiCk0V_Wg/video.html

    Do you use anything to keep the deadwood features from rotting? I live in Norway so the weather and climate can be pretty wet

    • @bonsaiheirloom
      @bonsaiheirloom  Před 11 měsíci

      Rotting branches simulates nature, which is the natural look I want for my bonsai. If you really want to protect your jin, some people here use line sulphur to coat the branches to preserve the jin of bonsai. You can adjust the color by the concentration of the liquid you brush on. This is also used to protect fruit trees, and therefore should be available in your area.

    • @bonsaiheirloom
      @bonsaiheirloom  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Concave cutter has a round front, which can cut a branch off below the surface of the trunk, whereas the knob cutter is straight. I have found the knob cutter is adequate for all my needs.
