- 🫙 One of my favorite features of our off grid homestead cabin is our mason jar shelf for storing bulk food items.
🫙 We store a lot of bulk dry goods, and I love the Ball 1/2 gallon mason jars. This shelf accommodates 88 1/2 gallon jars, but I don’t have that many quite yet!
👀 See how we made it, and hopefully you will get inspired!

The shelf is beautiful. I love how the jars look, but my first thought was...I can deduce she has never experience an earthquake before in that zone. No one in my country, Chile, could have that kind of shelf. We shake all the time.😉I just finish new shelfs in my pantry and the first thing I did was secure them to the wall and put a barrier in front of the shelves so that the food would not fall to the floor due to earthquakes. Perhaps you need to put a rebar in the front of the shelf too, just in case.
Wow!
🤩
I certainly did not take an earthquake into account! You are right!
They probably would not withstand an earthquake, but thankfully, here in East Tennessee those are fairly rare.
Thanks for your concern!!
I was thinking the same thing. Toddlers are also hazardous 😂.
I would add a drop down safety rail in front or more space between shelves with a safety lip. There are also those slides that hold the jars by the lid, but that could get pricy and complicated.
Yeah…I’ve seen those but they seemed too complicated for me.
Exactly what I was thinking! " But what about earthquakes?!! " Here in New Zealand quakes are reasonably regular and can be seriously damaging... thus I am always conscious of this risk when I store my jars of preserves and dry foods etc.
@LoneSeaEagleOfSkye
That must really make you consider everything! Where you put things, where they might land if they fall…
I’ve only experienced a small tremor one time.
I don't think this is weird at all! We are that type of family too, if you don't see it we forget it too. I love this idea and it fir your home beautifully!! Love it, great job!
Aww… ☺️
Thank you for that!
Glad we are kindred spirits in that regard.
Thanks for stopping by!
That is a dream wall. I would have it all filled up ❤
I’m working on it!
Have you seen the price of mason jars these days? I have to pace myself! 🫙
That is lovely for dry goods. I have a pantry for my canned jars and just built a second one this past winter. Then my cousin gave me enough jars to fill it including some gallon and half gallon. Large creamer containers have plastic lids that fit the gallons. My dry goods are scattered where ever they will fit and in containers to keep out critters. I hide the sweets from my diabetic Eugene.
That’s a perfect example of making things work!
I was having such anxiety before you showed the rebar. 😂
Gorgeous shelves!
lol! That was an integral part for sure!!
Too much valuable treasure to let it plunge to a crash below!
Thanks for coming by!
lol me too!!!!
I love that you have the Berkey there too, love it!
Yes, it makes it super convenient!
I love your shelves. It divides the space, but still keeps it open. Plus, awesome storage! I, also, need to see what I have or it's 'out of sight, out of mind'.
Glad to know we aren’t the only ones!
Yup, gotta see it. Is why I took the cupboard doors off. :)
That works!
WOW!!!
What a GORGEOUS WALL SHELF!!!
This is the COOLEST, MOST IMPRESSIVE, MOST BEAUTIFUL THING THAT I'VE EVER SEEN!!!
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR SHARING---
AND PLEASE TELL YOUR WONDERFUL & TALENTED HUSBAND THAT HE DID AN AMAZING JOB!😍😍😍😍😍
Thank you!
It was actually our 15-16 year old son (at the time) but thank you!

OMGOSH!!!
That's even MORE AMAZING!!!🤗🤗🤗🤗
Yesterday, I was looking at a wall of my dining room/kitchen combination, thinking I wanted to get rid of the coffee bar mess. I only drink one cup of coffee in the morning. I thought it would be nice to have a shelf unit built in for my home canned foods. But I like your idea of dried items better, using the 1/2 gallon jars. That is what I am using for rice, sugars (granulated, powdered, and brown), freeze-dried eggs, etc. Since mine would be a sheetrock wall behind it, fairy lights would be nice since there is a plug on that wall. I agree with out of sight out of mind.
@donnalovintexas8760
Ohh…I’d love to see it with fairy lights!
No reason having Sheetrock behind would not work. We just have what we have and made do. So will you!
Love the wall. Mom and I have always used the 2 quart jars for dry goods and they are usually on the counter or above the top cabinets so that we can see what is in them.
I really love the size. So practical. When I was making a lot of my own flour, they came in super handy!
Such a beautiful a functional feature wall. Thank you.
Thank you!
We made it for the functionally, and beauty is a bonus! 👏 🫙 😃
I absolutely love this idea and it looks beautiful.
I’m SO GLAD so many have found this inspirational!
Glad you like it! 👏
Thanks for coming by!
Seeing is remembering! I'll buy that since I know I have cupboards full of foods I cannot remember. Love the lights coming through the glass. I assume there is a stair case behind them.
I agree.
Yes, it’s a staircase and also we have a light and a window, which helps with the nice glow of light.
Thanks for coming by!
Love the mason jar display shelves ❤
Thank you so much! It’s shocking to me to see how much our little wall resonates with so many people!
Thanks for coming by!
Beautiful, as well as functional!!
Thanks!
The best of both!
My first video of yours, I love these shelves!❤
Awesome! Hope you come back! Glad you came!
very fun! This mason jar shelf wall had caught my eye in one of your previous videos! Love it! AND- wow! CZcams loved your video!! 6.5k views at the time of my watching this!! way to go!
I have no idea what happened! Kind of floored about it all, but it’s helping out a lot!
This is genius and GORGEOUS!
I have wanted to add shelf lighting in my pantry forever but this use makes me think of BACKLIGHTING it just to make it pretty.
Good idea!
I used bricks, boards, amd pantry items as a room divider in one small footprint space i lived. For myself at the time, i used glass jars but also a wide assortment of interesting and different containers for my food storage. It was in an era, space, and place that quirky and elecectic worked.
Oh, I WISH I could have seen that. I really love oddball and interesting jars!
@@RidgeHavenHomestead Jars, wood and metal boxes/t8is, repurposed food container glass jars, packets in stacked metal lunch boxes, at the time many liquors came in painted metal boxes, a couple of baskets, staggered rows of store bought canned goods. And a couple of different cloth jar toppers held by rubber band to draw the eye around. - It was cool looking but I must confess it was arranged by look more so by function so things were more scattered than all the different veggies together, etc...
@terryhenderson424 I think I would have loved it and you sound a bit like a hippie minded soul!
This is a TERRIFIC idea…just added you as a subscription and I’m delighted that I ran across your channel. KUDOs for such wonderful INNOVATION!!
Thanks for the shoutout!
We came up with it out of necessity and it’s proven to be quite an inspiration to so many!
Wonderful idea, thanks for sharing
Thanks so much!
I just subscribed because you are so real. I am 71 and still can’t overcome dust.
Welcome!
Dust will always be among us! Especially when we are in construction!!
Absolutely LOVE it!
Thank you. 😊
Super practical! 👏
🫙
It looks beautiful and I have had something similar (but not as aesthetically pleasing as yours) in the past. I am sort of in the same boat as you, I need to see it out in order to use it. The things I didn't like about the jars being out though was the dust issue and sunlight degrades herbs n things faster. If you go through them quickly, that wouldn't be too much of an issue. I was not a fan of how quickly they needed to be dusted though!
For sure! Dust so far is bad, as we are still on construction. 🚧
It’s a trade off. Gotta bust out my trusty feather duster soon!
Dust is inevitable for me. I live in the country but on a 4 lane highway with semi trucks, etc, blowing dust and weed seeds everywhere. My green grass is green weeds😅 but at the distance and 65-75mph no one knows or cares. Just me.
I'm a first time viewer & I love your video & your shelf system. I wish we had the ability to do that in our house. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. God bless! ❤
Oh, I hope you come back!
We kind of talk about everything and anything homestead related.
Thanks for coming! Glad you love the shelf!
Beautiful jar shelf
Thank you! 😊
I love that idea! Looks fabulous
Thanks! 😊
Thanks for coming by!
Beautiful and funtional!!
Thank you!!😊
Such a neat idea. It looks beautiful. I started canning last year and have used 2 metal shelves, but have to double stack, too. I need more room. Maybe I can make something similar.
You absolutely could!
Hello , im a nrw subscriber, tyfs
Awesome!
Thanks for coming!
brilliant idea! great execution!
We appreciate that!
Thank you so much!
Hope it inspired you!
Your wall is beautiful! Our family is an Out of Sight, Out of Mind family, as well. 😆🥰
Concerning your One Gallon Jars, have you ever ordered from Azure Standard? They deliver once per month at a designated area nearby for pick up.
We get all our one and half gallon jars from them. Side note, lids are ordered separately because they offer a variety. We've never had any breakage. They give immediate refunds, by the way.
The reason I mention this is because of what you said. I just went online to compare Walmart's price here in NE Texas to Azure's price. Apart from the lid price, Walmart is very close to four times more expensive. I thought you'd like to know! 🥰
Oh, wow!
That’s crazy!
I have a friend who’s mentioned Azure to me but I have not gone to check it out. I’ve also never tried the full gallon jars but would def be willing to.
Thanks so much!
@RidgeHavenHomestead Oh, I hope you check them out! You may be surprisingly pleased and blessed. 🤗 Their bulk food prices (we purchase Organic) are amazing!
By the way, I love your shelves, pantry, and particularly your sign above your doorway. Thank you for taking all the time to record, and for sharing the detailed descriptions and your home with us all. ❤️🙏
@Christine-777
And I appreciate you taking the time to come back and comment and for being so kind.
I love this idea, it's really beautiful. I'm wondering though about losing nutrition because the food is exposed to light?
I’m sure it would be better if it were enclosed, especially the dried herbs. We had to weigh our options, and this one seemed good for us.
Most of this food is not long term storage. We eat it up and replenish it. I’ll eventually find a better place for my herbs, but it works well for now, and I’m drinking a lot more holy basil tea now that I can see it!
Awesome Jar rack. Great idea thanks for sharing with us. Be blessed from Iowa!
Be blessed from Tennessee!
Thanks for stopping in!!
Really nice home and organization system. I'm inspired. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Since I’m not naturally too good at home organization, I’m excited to hit on something that works for our family!
Thanks for coming by and chiming in! ♥️
Absolutely beautiful❤❤❤🕊️
Why, thank you kindly! 💕
I love the wall I love the look of all your jars it’s very practical and functional 🧡
Thank you so much!!😊
❤❤❤I love the look. What a great idea!!! I think I would love to have one like your's when I have another home. I do what a basement.
Glad you like it!
Thanks for stopping in and letting me know!
God bless
Love it.
Thanks!
Glad you came by!
Great design ❤
Thank you so much! Appreciate you stopping by
My Walmart only has grey lids in stock. Wish i could have gotten white. I have started buying lids for those items we use often. At this point i think i will stick with the grey so they all match.
I’ve not seen the gray. Last I checked ours just had white. I’m guessing gray will show less dust, so that’s a bonus!
I do like your jar wall. I think you're brave not to put at least a thin board behind the jars!
Thank you. A thin board is not needed with the rebar, and besides, rebar is much stronger.
Thanks for stopping in!
@@RidgeHavenHomestead Are you not afraid of your jars falling down the stairs? that's what I was referring too.
No, I’m not afraid. I would be, but the rebar prevents that.
I think maybe you didn’t watch to see that part. 🫙
If you go to 10:15 in the video you’ll see the rebar. It’s quite strong.
Fabulous ❣️
My larger question is...
How
Where did you acquire all those large jars?
They are pretty expensive, least for me here in Illinois
Regardless
Simply fabulous 😍
Most of them I got when they used to be cheaper at Ace Hardware. They used to send us coupons too, so they ended up being like $11 for 6. Not anymore!
But I’m working on it!
I can get this size from Azure Standard as well for a decent price
@sarahsheartshome
Hmm. I need to chat with you.
Walmart currently has them for I think $16.44 for 6. That’s why I am SLOWLY adding them.
I collect glass insulators too. Was your husband a lineman?
No, not a lineman. But we spent time out in Northern California a few years back. He and the guys he worked for were traveling alongside the Union Pacific Railroad lines, and they were removing the wire from the old telegraph poles. The telegraph followed the RR lines. It was really cool!
@@RidgeHavenHomestead Very Good! that is awesome. We lived in in Calif (now hav a homestead in NC). My husband was a lineman, he got me a few thruout the years, thats what made me ask. I love your cabin etc.
@proudgrandma138
Thank you!
Whereabouts in NC? We are about 1.5 hrs from Asheville.
The wall is really pretty. I guess I am thinking about shelf life, however. As a freeze dryer and as an herbalist, I keep my mason jars that are vacuum sealed in a cool dark place to add to keep the nutrient/efficacy value as strong as possible. I noticed that most of your jars are not vacuum sealed. I don't guess that it matters as long as you plan to eat everything in a year or so.
I should probably look into that for longer term use. We try to use these up, but I appreciate the suggestion. I have lots to learn and improve on!
Thanks for coming by!
It's pretty, but I can in jars for storage. And I also seal jar of rice, flour etc for storage. I wouldn't want to have all my jars out in the open for everyone to see. I do have a shelf for items I'm going to be cooking with in my kitchen. Most of my dry herbs are sealed jars and I keep some in jars to use in my kitchen.
@2WOLFS I can too, and those jars get stored in the pantry.
These work very well for our crew!
I may check into vacuum sealing!
How do you vacuum seal mason jars? I’m starting a small apothecary
@nikkireigns
Maybe someone here will speak up. I have not done it before.
No risk assessment what so ever. smh
Not sure what you mean, but thanks for stopping in! 😊
