Noboa vs. AMLO: The embassy raid and Ecuador's deeper crisis w/Guillaume Long

  • Ecuador has been thrust into the international spotlight following a flagrantly illegal raid on the Mexican embassy on April 5. President Daniel Noboa ordered the raid to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas, who had sought asylum on the embassy grounds since Dec. 2023. Mexico has responded by severing diplomatic ties with Ecuador and filing a complaint with the ICJ, specifically requesting that the court expel Ecuador from the UN until an apology is given. Governments across the Americas and the world have joined the chorus of denunciations, noting the violation of diplomatic immunity as a severe breach of international law.
Ecuador once stood out in the region for its relatively low crime rate and steadily improving social progress, yet its fortunes have radically reversed in the past decade. The fall of the left-wing Correistas unleashed a tide of neoliberalism and narco-trafficking in the country, sending poverty and crime soaring. Noboa, who is the son of Ecuador's wealthiest man, came to power on promises to address the security crisis-but so far, has only managed to haul the country into a three-month long state of emergency. To understand recent events and place them in the proper context of Ecuador's contemporary politics, The Real News speaks with Guillaume Long, Ecuador's former Foreign Minister.

Thank you for this great analysis. Many people, even Ecuadorians have NO IDEA how neoliberalism is destroying our country. Propaganda/ corporate news ARE THE MAIN responsible source of keeping this going. People need to stop watching TV and get information from channels like yours. 👏👏👏🇪🇨❤️‍🩹

I totally agree with your comment.
As an Ecuadorian, I am ashamed about this childish president we ended up with, and how the media manipulates just everything in order to support these Neoliberal puppets.

A dangerous precedence to violate the sovereignty of a country by using force to extract an individual seeking asylum inside its embassy.
Ecuador shouldn’t be required to make a hollow apology but rather returning to the Mexican embassy what isn’t his.

False. Mexico violated the Caracas treaty which granted asylum to a convicted and sentenced criminal. Jorge Glas is Ecuador’s prisoner. That is not to say I agree with Noboa’s decision to raid an embassy and breaking international law.

That's false, Glas was liberated, was a free man, until now he doesn't have an arrest order, he supposed to be under investigation for "another crime" but there's not an arrest order just wanted for "questioning"

THE IMPORTANT THING IS TO ELIMINATE INTERNATIONAL CRIME AND FOR THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO DEMAND ACCOUNTS FROM THE EMBASSIES THAT HOST THEM. I BELIEVE THAT WAS A MISCALCUTATION WAS TO GIVE HEARD TO THIS MAN WHO IN THE CORREISM Occupied SEVERAL GOVERNMENT POSITIONS BEING FOREIGN , DISRESPECTING THE RIGHT OF ECUADORIANS TO HAVE THOSE POSITIONS

You’re ‘funny’; not the positive connotation of the word.
The Ecuadorian government officials and troopers that participated in this act are all
      criminals under International law.
Once Noboa’s term is over, he will find himself at home inside a Mexican prison cell. There is a criminal charge against him in Mexico for ordering the illegal raid.

Bad move on the part of Noboa, it's actually embarrasing for us Ecuadorians what he did. Showed lack of experience and in the long run he "shot himself in the foot", if you will. To add insult to injury, he then proceeded to lie about it saying the embassy staff "hit" the assailants, it was actually the oppposite. Bad politics, he won't last long in power, thank God.

That was probably a awkward moment at the embassy. Why did Mexico not defend it's territorial sovereignty? Maybe he came in empty handed...a case of cash would have gotten him out.

Its geopolitics, Amlo its an older politician that has a lot of experience dealing with the USA. Mexico does have the capacity to blockade the main ports of Ecuador in the pacific however that’s the reaction the USA wants, very simple terms Ecuador would be the Ukraine to Mexico, the same way Argentina is being prepped right now to be used as a Proxy to fight Brasil. The way Amlo went about it its a lot smarter, he even got the US and Canada to properly condemn the assault after a very weak response from the US.

Neo liberal states are actually partly two things: (1) Absolutist and intolerant of alternative viewpoints - including those derived from reality at different socio-economic levels within a society and indeed the worlds, and (2) The preferred ideology of all anarchists, sowers of chaos, and, in he main, criminals whose main goal is to pursue wealth and power in the complete absence of restraint. Certain rogue states set the bar low enough for people like Nobola to feel that no consequences will arise fro violating the sovereignty of foreign countries. We are descending into a period where the international order isn’t.

Banana emporium heir Noboa is a bad prresident and a worse gambler . He bet the house on the embassy raid but now is losing big time.
Saying that this backfired on him is an understatement.

@edgartoepel7473 . I do not see how that invasion could benefit the government. Now, it is a pariah state. That plebiscite you are referring to was a loss for the guy, too. That was a smoke screen . If you ask someone whether he loves his mother, the answer will be a yes.
But I understand the government lost in two important questions about the sovereignty of the country and the neoliberal policies they were trying to implement.
So, whenever the UN drops the hammer, I do not know what is going to happen.

The only reason the United States has not had a coup d'état is because there is no American embassy in Washington, DC.
