I was at a red light on sherman way in Van Nuys, Ca in 1999 and I had this song on the Higher Learning soundtrack CD and it was blasting in my radio with the windows down and when I finally glanced over next to me their was a minivan with two hella fine Mexican girl’s in it looking over at me and two Black guy’s in the front seat’s and the passenger was leaning over and looking at me like, Bruh are you for real?? LMFAO😂🤣 I was so embarrassed and immediately turned the volume down and once the light finally turned green I punched it and got away and felt so stupid and dumb.😂🤣

Came because of higher learning. That was the first movie I seen with my high school sweetheart as a first date. This was our song from the soundtrack. Every time I hear this song I think about her and the good times we had together. Last week she died. Miss you Nicole. I’ll never forget you. Xxoo

oddly? (weirdly??)I agree. totally. everyone flips their wig over Siren, and I've even got to see/hear her do that live in person too-- but I've always been partial to this and Merman (which I also caught live- at a secret time: the two solo songs she delivered nightly, serving as a break between the electric full band sets during her 98/99 plugged tour... though if I recall correctly, Merman was actually performed at MSG in NYC. A tasty sold out event that served up a savant at the peak of her magical creative and performance prowess, coincidentally my first ever tori show.)
      pardon my ramble.
but just saying, does she ever perform this live? I love it and woild

    • @barfs3147
      @barfs3147 Před 3 lety

      again sorry about that.
Just wanted to say I think I'd prefer to hear this live more than any other b-sides... I'm getting old though, watch me look up the tour history and I find that I actually saw a rendition of her playing at live at the Beacon Theater or something...
since we ARE commenting on this track. let me also say I can never get enough of this track. a rarity for me that I've not only endured but enjoyed hearing this on repeat. literally on a loop. both ln my stereo. cd turntable... and on music match, napster, winamp... lol this takes me back.
then my ipod video (the red U2 one) on my mac's iTunes and then finally here on CZcams.
slideshows rub me the wrong way, but I cant get enough of that guitar tone on Steve's funky chords at the end
I love when he gets all funkified like he was on tour with Bowie or something.
Precious things, cornflake girl and even something from.venus and back comes to mind
do you have any favorite caton memories
? when he used to play guitar with her practically every show and album from the start until 2000 I think? or am I wrong about that?
I dont think it was until I 2007 with her bitch posse ,(what a tour that was too!!) that she finally appeared with a replacement guitarist (I realize her husband had been filling in for more than a minute on the recordings)
      I wonder what happened.
dont we all love to imagine juicy gossip? amicable splits are most likely the norm but it's fun to fantasize about tantrums and firings. name-calling and public shaming innit?

This song is about a woman's perceived place in the world. She doesn't like the fact that she's stuck in that world. She would rather fly and be free. The pretty garden is elsewhere with the other butterflies. And, despite the common notion, not all butterflies are female. Definitely in my top 10 of all time.

This is one of the last of the real tori songs that I think of as like the Tori that people really loved and bonded with because something weird happened during the stuff she did with boys for Pele and there's still a few songs on there where she's the same Tori but she became so big then and I would never deny somebody their success and it's not like she was ever a mainstream artist exactly but she became a kind of reference point for people who didn't really know her stuff or her Persona or anything about really her even though she did some things after that that we're her essence and kind of got messed up writing style changing the marketing of her and I don't think any artist should be a one-trick pony I don't fault her for evolving Her Style but I think there was a lot of pressure because suddenly she was famous enough yet the personal nature of work made followers come off like they were a little too intense and the media played with that. I was in the same industry playing the same instrument and doing a singer-songwriter piano confessional Style where we my first record came out in 91. It got compared 2 Suzanne Vega who was my only female influence sorry for the long comment and Joni Mitchell who I hadn't heard until they heard that comparison and the Cure and then later stuff I did was being compared to Tori I actually met her at a job I had alternative station radio station where I was the morning show astrologer and we just had crucify in our rotation I had no idea she was a piano player to I thought that was awesome but I was there to do her natal chart in her reading under the pink was about to be released I got a promo copy she did a performance on-air of two songs and I was totally like blow away. There is not a Time on radio where anyone was doing anything like that even what I was doing was not having in the states I was selling my stuff overseas more than here so I was just smitten with her stuff I loved under the pink I love that era of Tori although it would later become I really double edged sword because that was an influence of mine I was already doing what I do my stuff select different and some of her meet her fans made me so bitter not to her but this style of song reminds me of the Tori I loved and I did get Scarlets walk I love that and I hadn't heard this song Butterfly forever I'm so glad I heard it because it reminds me of what I loved about her work. So many years later I have a different attitude because I was going to a different label and even though I only sold like 50,000 and records people look at your score so to speak they look things on the internet come to your own conclusions I can't imagine what a pain in the ass it was on her skill to have people completely getting her wrong and painting her is some kind of flake or just misreading what she did and how she did it and who she was and it must have really liked affected things to for her is person for her as a songwriter because it's Human Nature you can't put that in the back of your mind someone told me never read reviews good or bad because the stick there and I wish I listen to that man time earlier I wonder if some of the things in her albums after a certain point affected similarly. I actually was psyched to read the Press previewing native invader and it was a good album I wish I'd seen the show but I had a lot of things that I had to be doing in a different city the cheat already played. the best Tori comes ashore in times of adversity and I think that's how she works through her s*** and she was happy without conflicts she had her daughter she's still happily married she didn't have a lot of things going on necessarily to write around and that's cool because she had enough challenges and we went through the winter in earlier work some of us grew up with her I can relate to her as a person not as musical influences native invader writing about menopause I had hysterectomy if you years ago I'm 43 but I cancer well I was reading the Press about her album coming out I was sitting in ICU with my mother I couldn't speak because she was intubated I had talks with my foster daughter who's a little older than Tosh tell him to get over yourself to some shows again and this song just made me feel like I was me again it's no divorces future ahead where I could be what I wanted to be when I grew up and not know what that was and kiss a beautiful girl know how fast of you honey and all that so I understand if you want to rip my ass to shred for writing this really long post and comment all I really meant to say with thank you for bringing back the reason I love this morning and her work sincerely pepper McGowan A Relic from the past and the glory of the 90s may it rest in chaos and estrogen

25 years ago I was 18 years old and I was on Sherman Way Blvd in Van Nuys, Ca by Sepulveda blvd waiting at that red light to get in the 405 freeway and I was super high on chronic and lost in my world in this song and I was blasting it and when I finally looked next to me there was a mini van with a black guy looking at me like, N*gga are you serious cuh? His face was so funny the look LMFAO😂 I was like oops my bad and immediately turned it down.🤣

as someone mentioned before, it's from a movie sountrack, but if you want more music similar to this, look on "Under the Pink" and the associated B-Sides. "Little Earthquakes" is also similar in style and themes, and maaaybe, depending on your tastes, part of "Scarlet's walk" and "Night of Hunters.". I'd like to mention that the rest is also recomendably awesome, too, but veers into fairly different styles, like electronica or one record that has a harpsichord where you'd normally have a guitar.

The Moon looked so mysterious in the sky tonight! The clouds looked like fast moving mist that the light of the Moon shined right through them. Full Moon. I just felt like hearing this song right now. I dunno.

I've always assumed that was her earlier guitarist Steve Caton, sadly they haven't played together since 1999. His work on her album To Venus and Back is just gorgeous.
