      Pine tar can be argued in the pros because a lot of pitchers during their careers have used it many times and it is solely to get a better grip on the ball, in an interview most hitters in the MLB prefer it because it’s better to know where the ball is going at 100mph than not having a good grip and risking safety.

    In the Pine Tar game, one thing the announcers got wrong: The rule had nothing to do with pine tar hitting the trademark. The rule was (and is) that you can have pine tar a maximum of 18 inches from the knob of the bat. When they laid the bat across home plate, they were doing so because home plate is 17 inches across, so they could see if the pine tar exceeded that by an inch.
    The rule still exists--you cannot use a bat with more than 18 inches of pine tar. Now, though, the penalty is only that the batter has to get a new bat. He is not out for using an illegal bat.

    • @qwilliams1539

    Baseball bat used by George Brett in the Pine Tar Incident on July 24, 1983
    On July 24, 1983, with the Royals playing against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, in the top of the ninth inning with two out, Brett hit a go-ahead two-run homer off of Goose Gossage to put the Royals up 5-4. After the home run, Yankees manager Billy Martin cited to the umpires a rule, stating that any foreign substance on a bat could extend no further than 18 inches from the knob.
    The umpires measured the amount of pine tar, a legal substance used by hitters to improve their grip, on Brett's bat; the pine tar extended about 24 inches. The home plate umpire, Tim McClelland, signaled Brett out, ending the game as a Yankees win. Brett charged out of the dugout directly toward McClelland, and had to be physically restrained by two umpires and Royals manager Dick Howser.
    The Royals protested the game, and American League president Lee MacPhail upheld the protest, reasoning that the bat should have been excluded from future use, but the home run should not have been nullified. Amid much controversy, the game was resumed on August 18, 1983, from the point of Brett's home run, and ended with a Royals win.

    I’ll never forget when, in 1996, getting a bat removed backfired on Davy Johnson. He was manager of the orioles at the time. They were in Seattle facing the Mariners, my hometown team, and Alex Rodriguez stepped to the plate. In an effort to get back at Lou Pinella for getting one of his pitchers tossed in a previous series, Johnson had the home plate umpire confiscate Rodriguez’s bat, which looked very similar to Griffey’s. A-Rod gave it up without a fuss, grabbed another identical bat and smashed a 3 run homer, much to the dismay of Davy Johnson.

      the announcer was an EX pitcher (the great Al Leiter) who would know more than you that yes, ALL pitchers use some substance to grip the ball better. It isn’t about throwing a spit ball, it’s about getting a better grip. Any young pitcher coming up is taught to use a grip substance. Rosin is a joke. If you are going to make it against the rules then you need to just not have anything used for better grip. Get rid of the rosin then because what’s the point? And of course it happens to one Yankee pitcher (who was traded for by the way so he always probably did the same thing even when he came up through the Mariners system), but he’s a Yankee at the moment so attack the Yankees as usual. As said, you continue to use what works best for you growing up and becoming a pro pitcher.

The rule is there, he would presumably know the rule, he decided it didn't apply to him, he got caught. That means that it's on no-one but him. Any sport with a ball, golf, pool, bowling, baseball, spin is what makes a ball move. Anything that helps you grip a ball better is going to help you create spin/ more spin. Why do you think pitchers are allowed to go to their mouths in the cold? That little bit of moisture helps them get a better grip on the ball. I.e. more control, more spin.

    • @derekobrien5481
      @derekobrien5481 Před 6 lety +41

      It's because the Royals protested the call. Protests are common in baseball but they are rarely upheld. The league office upheld the process on the grounds that the rule was basically obsolete -- the rule dated back to the early days of baseball when pinetar could stain the ball and necessitate a replacement -- or to save money, in other words. The A.L. president felt this was no longer an issue, with the number of balls used in a game, and should not be a reason for cancelling a home run. They ended up having to finish the game again later in the season.

      Well in the original game, there was no bottom of the 9th because the Yankees were leading. Brett being called out ended the game. When the appeal was upheld, they resumed the game with the Royals leading 5-3 with 2 outs in the top of the 9th. They played that, then the bottom of the 9th, then it was over.
