First saw it as a child. Still the best lyrics & vocal performance in musical theater history. Saw Ted Neeley live a few years ago. His voice has aged like fine wine. It's deeper and richer, but he can still hit those notes.
Amazing singer, saw this as a young boy, heard countless times in my cassette days later CDs, and watched it just now, still stir my soul from the inside out.
The only thing that I would change about this song is that Jesus, in the Bible, didn't demand to know "why" from God, He just asked if there was another way. He was still going to do it, no matter how much He knew about it, because it was His Father's Will. Of course, even here, He doesn't receive the visions from God until after He says He'll do it anyway, even without knowing.
I always thought that the "why" question was a way of saying "I do not deserve this". He knows there is no other way. Jesus does not need an explanation, this scene it is simply his most human side. His desire to continue living.
I still have a big crush on Ted Neeley @ the age of 57 same as I did as a 8 year old child. I was extremely blessed to have parents that took their kids to live performances on a regular basis. Jesus Christ as portrayed by Ted was & still is my absolute favorite. Yvonne Elliman will never be outdone by any other performer. Live performances are the absolute best entertainment!
I was born 1966 - I watched this as a 7yr old - this man IS my Jesus - and there is no other - I cry still like I did then - I was traumatised as a child by the film at Jesus dying - and sat in my office today I suddenly thought about the film - I have googled it and I am deeply saddened to see Judas (Carl Anderson) has passed on but relieved to see 'My Jesus' is still here - Judas and Jesus from the original film are my total Gods - I loved them both equally and I hope to hear them sing to me one day in heaven when we all get there - its the best film from Andrew and Tim xx
like the music of it. i watch that show over & over again so many times , i like it. thank you . show okay. it took 3 yrs to make it and they done a good job,, how money they to make that show ????
It's really sad and poignant when you realize he was just a man underneath it all, sent hete to die for the sins of the world. His torture and crucifixion were traumatic, painful, and drawn out. It was most likely terrifying for him. Most Christians don't even know what he really did & God sending his own son in our image to die for us... that's love and sacrifice for humanity. That's not a selfish or cruel God at all.
The transition at the end from Jesus submitting to God to a grim Judas who only tried to do what he thought was right is HEARTBREAKING! It might just be the most heartbreaking part of this video.
I love this movie and soundtrack, not just for its superficial value but also for what it did with the old, sacred tale. For a change, we saw the events of Jesus' final days not from the reverence of the far future, not the angle of the holy and divine, but the grounded perspective of man. For an hour or so these artists dared to tell that tale, not of the founder of one of the greatest religions of history, but of the man who stood at the crossroads, and took that path into legend. His struggles from the earth, not his destiny from on high. It is a view few are willing to take, so vast the institution that relies on the divinity of his journey nowadays. And I'm sure there are plenty who are made uncomfortable by viewing the figure at the center of their faith through such a gritty lens. Maybe some particularly zealous Christians think it blasphemous, even. But I believe it is appropriately reverent, just in its own way. You can feel it in the passion of those who played it out, and the care they took in their telling.
WoW!
It seems to me that Jesus is doing almost the same thing, asking the same questions as Eve before she took the forbidden fruit. "I'd want to know, I'd want to know, my God / I'd have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord (...) Want to see, I'd want to see, my God / Have to see, I'd have to see, my Lord" It's only that she made the step (disobedience), and he didn't.
