The fact that you still tear that song apart while turning 80 yrs old this year is nothing short of miraculous! I was 5 yrs old when my mom brought this album home - it has been my favorite album from that day to this. Thank you Mr Neeley for 50 yrs of amazing vocal work!!!
Holy crap, he's 80?! That's insane! He looks and sounds much younger.
Yes❤
Wow! Freakin amazin
Is he almost 80 here in this video? 😮
@@maruscatarabella9623 yes!
Tears in 73 and after 50 years, I still have tears. 80 years or not, no one could ever hold a candle to Ted Neeley.
I get you
Try Dan Vasc, he is another talented singer like Ted.
I agree
Agreed
You got that right!!!
No other cast will EVER top the originals. Sobbed when I was a kid at this. What a performer! ❤❤❤
This film got to me. How old was I? I was 8 years old. Ted Neeley was the best performance for Jezus I have ever seen, this role was on to his soul and his voice mighty. The whole film resonated to my soul. My brother handed me the LP over to me for my birthday. Somehow he knew I was fan of this film I saw in school. No film can beat this plot, this music, those emotions. Thank you Ted Neeley, (and the whole crew) for inspiring so many people. This from the Beloved Companion (The complete gospel of Mary Magdalene by Jehanne de Quillan) , Myriam out of Belgium.
I am a 74 year old Man and I cried after him singing after 50 years. WOOOOOW
When you hit that note “Why should I die?!!” I got chills (again!) I’m still as moved by your performance today as when I first saw JCS way back when. Thank you for sharing your talent and Jesus with the world!! Love you, Ted!
I got to hear Mr. Neeley sing my favourite musical live in 2017.
I wasn't even born in 1973.
Thank you.
Ted Neeley set the bar high for anyone who would follow him into this amazing role. And no one else has ever come close to reaching that bar.
Now THAT'S impressive. I love Jesus Christ Superstar and no one can hold a candle to Ted Neeley even at 80 years old.
Agreed. Man's still got it. My parents, and my Mom's sisters all played this for all of us, while we were growing up. I'm not sure if any of the boys got into it, but my cousin Heather and I love it.
Always the BEST! Love you Ted!
He was called by God to play Jesus part! He was supernaturally gifted by God with the voice and vocal range! Yes, miraculous! Hellelujah to the Most High!
The sheer power, emotion, and control, even after all those years, never fail to blow my mind. We are lucky to have you sir! The GOAT.
m sitting in a hospital after a crazy surgery, and I see a video I hadn’t seen. Turned out this shot THIS YEAR!
Teddy has brought so much love to this planet in serious ways. He reaches everyone, no matter their creed or religion-Christian or not.
Thank you from the very heart of every cell.
I lived in J C superstar as a kid. Became a Christian. Jesus knew who he was and what he was doing. Superstar helps us understand his human nature and feel that frailty. But he is God...and he is man. Such a mystery.
For : papadopp3870 : God has already blessed you ! ❤
⭐⭐🌟⭐⭐ Truly an inspired and inspiring performamce
Hate to break the news to you but he is lip syncing. Watch Gethsemane 2021 Live in Boston.
This is my favorite musical, my all time favorite song. You, you Ted Neeley brought life and inspiration to generations. I will never forget your interpretation and delivery. Most humble regards to you and your never ending, God given talent that remains unchallenged. Thank you sincerely.
Today is Palm Sunday good watching Jesus Christ Superstar for the millionth time. You were born to play that role. Nothing will ever compare to the 73 movie thank you and for all of the cast

Absolutely..... the movie soundtrack captures lightning in a bottle! Nothing in 50 years comes close.
I have listened to Jesus Christ Superstar every Good Friday since the early 1980's. I have seen Ted Neely star in the musical in Buffalo. Truly SPECTACULAR! God Bless!🐢🇺🇸
Hearing this song again 50 years later still brings tears to my eyes and deeply touched my heart. I can't believe Ted Needley is 80. He still has amazing voice and looks so much younger than his years. Ted thank you for blessing us with this song once again and thank you for helping us to understand how human Jesus was and what He did for us by going through a painful and agonising death on the cross.
Ow wow! When was he here? I have lived in Bflo area since 1986. Btw I used to do the same thing as a teen. Shut myself in my room on Good Friday & listen to the entire album. I still have it but it's the original Broadway album. I remember seeing the movie. This video was so beautiful, so emotionally moving.❤
@@marylynnacee4062 he was here about 10 years ago at Shea's
@@lindablair-rk9vr thanks. I wished I'd gone!
In 1973 I was 16. Mom gave me the option of getting this album or or George Harrison’s Bangladesh for Christmas. I chose this one. My father who never went to church thought it was sacrilegious. My mom, a staunch Catholic loved it.
Maybe he meant choosing JC over GH was sacrilegious 😂
I grew up watching Jesus christ superstar and I feel closer to Jesus everytime I watch. You have an absolutely powerful voice. Sending you blessings and love.
Oh my goodness this is amazing. Mr. Ted Neeley, NO ONE can play Jesus like you! I grew up watching this movie & I have it on DVD. I JUST missed you in Pittsburgh at the Benedum & I’m so disappointed 😢 At age 80, you absolutely “still got it”. Please come back again! ❤️🙏🏻
This singer... This song... Always makes me cry. His interpretation of Tim Rice's words are so powerful, even today.
Tim Rice's words. But yes, as much as I admire Ian Gillan for his astounding vocal work, there's only one true choice for this particular role, and that's Ted Neeley.
@@beapbassIt couldn't be anyone else!!
@@beapbass I fixed it. Thanks for the correction.
WOW! No one and I mean NO ONE can touch Ted Neeley when it comes to this song. I have listened to many... some are very good and come close. BUT, none can put the passion and power to it like Ted can. He is an amazing singer. I just wish he was known for some of his other works. He was the perfect person for this role. 50 years and he still nails the high notes. Amazing.
Couldn't agree more x
So true!!
Correct watched originally x
I feel the same intense magic when I first heard this with Ted leading, amazed and awestruck
I saw JCS live in Hollywood 50 years ago ~ Totally Incredible!!!
Yet, I recently discovered Dan Vasc, boosegumps on top of my goosebumps!!! Dan captured the unspeakable angst and remarkably delivers it to his audience!
I saw this when I was a sophomore in high school and loved it ❤ I'm 67 now and still love it.
I am so grateful and proud that Ted got to do this. Such a brilliant and inspiring person!
Whether 50, 100, 200 years or more pass, Ted Neeley's performance will always touch the viewer deeply. Thanks for more this version ❤🎶
So blessed to have seen Ted Neely perform in this wonderful musical 6 times & got to take my mom before she passed!
Words cannot express the awesomeness of your reprise of this iconic song. Both then and now you absolutely nailed this , I know every word to the songs , it was the best musical film I have ever watched. I thank you for bringing back all those memories. There will never be another portrayal of Jesus you truly owned this. A shout out to all the other wonderful singers in the film too.
How is this even possible?! His performance as Jesus is truly incomparable
I am still having goosebumps. Thank you so much, Ted Neeley for this amazing performance after 50 years. You are the Greatest of all time!! God bless you always!!
Yes thats real.
Same here exactly!
What an amazing performance then and today!!!
Wow. Sounds incredible Just as good as 50 years ago.
Insanely good. How is it possible? I was raised on this musical too and am shocked that he can still sing like this. Best. Jesus. Ever.
Lip sync and edit. Not real. The scream part is from the film in 1973.
Saw him performing in Rotterdam about 7 years ago. Awesome....mindblowing...his voice doesn't seem to age ❤
I shared this with my Aunts, and they all said that they got goosebumps from it all. This movie and soundtrack is mandatory. A Mom that I met at my kids' speech and occupational therapy place, was so excited when she found out that I was a fan of JCS. This movie, I plan to show my daughter, and my son will see it in time (he's 3). A time honored tradition for sure.
Happy Easter Sunday! 🐣☀️✝️🕉️
This is one of the greatest songs in theater history and Ted Neeley still hits that rock-n-roll high note!!! 🗣️🎤🎶 I connect with this song deeply!
To me, Easter is way more important that Christmas. Jesus being born was the easiest thing he did. Living life on earth, getting to the cross, taking one for humanity, and then coming back from the dead like “WHAT!” is the greatest “F’Round, F’Out” movement of all time! Say it ain’t so! 🙌🏼😁
If Jesus can have a moment when he doubted himself but still stayed committed to the divine contract, then it’s ok for all of us to feel this way too sometimes. This song reminds me to never give up and to hold on to faith because JOY COMES IN THE MORNING!
✊🏾no one could sing this song better than Ted Neeley. I truly feel he channeled Jesus when he sang this!
Ted Neeley's power, portraying Jesus through subtle innocence, is striking. He's never over the top or forced. It's so sensitive that when he lets loose its becomes so powerful you get chills then tears....and you BELIEVE.
My God what a voice and after 50 years as I said before thank you so much for posting these
Thank you so much, Mr. Ted Neeley, for continuing to moving us so beautifully for over 50 years. Your talent is as blessed as it is unbelievable.
Still beautiful.
🙌 Yes
Ted, I love you man! Respect for your voice and performance, man!
This just sent me back 50 years. This was the greatest explanation of the story of the life of Jesus that I had, and have, ever seen. I saw the movie first and it all finally made sense to me. Then, of course, I had to have the album (which I still have). When the stage production came to Portland, my Grandma bought us tickets and we went and saw it live. I always wondered why Ted Neely never became famous for other work. But I guess when you've been Jesus, you can't really ascend any higher...
As always I am moved to tears. Always sung with such incredible conviction. This song, Ted Neeley's voice and JCSS is timeless! Thank you for decades of beautiful, heartfelt music. 💜🙏💜
A lot of aging rock stars his age now who don't have half the chops he has today.
Sing on, rock on Ted! +++

I’m a fan, have been forever, but this is not a LIVE vocal. It’s definitely his voice though.
❤
I saw JCSS live performance with Ted and the original Judas, Mary and a few others. It was amazing! I will never forget it. 😊
Plus, and not to take away from the man's amazing talent, he was hot...lol!
Music in his soul. Timeless!
Amazing! Jesus Christ Superstar is my all time most favorite musical! I love how you kept your gorgeous "Jesus" long hair through the years. ❤💛💙
Amazing then, and still so impressive now! So blessed I was able to see him sing it live
Unfassbar kraftvoll!! Und das nach sooo vielen Jahren.... Man schaut in die Abgründe der Gefühle!
It's not just your voice, but your eyes and amazing expression that makes you such a great performer.
The biggest crush I ever had as a teenager! The only musical worth watching over and over again! I finally met him in Cupertino California ! He is the nicest person ever! So happy he still so very talented and Incredibly handsome!!!
Every time I watch I go back to my childhood and remember how I felt watching this movie for the first time,
Ted Neeley is just increadible. So bad Carl Anderson passed away so early. :( Greetings from Hungary where this movie is absolutaly popular. I got goosebumps as I watched this clip. God save Ted Neeley.
Wow! I cannot believe he can still hit those high notes! And just so raw and full of emotion. Beautiful!!
I dont think he did
They played the '73 version when he hit the high notes
Just mouthing
Wow is right! We get to see Ted do it 50 years later! How cool! I saw him about 12 years ago, and his voice was going out on him even then. No matter. It was a blessed joy to behold. Seeing the performance 50 years after first seeing it in the movie theater still evokes an emotional response. Such a powerful song! Glad you liked it, too.
A little hybrid going on here. The fact that most people know EXACTLY what the original sounds like will always give it away. But Ted's great.
Im a 57 yr old woman, who fell head over heels for u when i was in my 20's. Sir, i still feel the same. I had the absolute pleasure of being able to see u live and was shocked then that u still had the ability to reach those incredible notes. And now to see u still feeling the music, im blown away. Please take care and keep on blowing us all away ❤
I loved him since I was young and a child listening to this album. my wife and I had the chance to see him live as Jesus Christ and he was great .. what emotions he gives out with his voice none is better ..
His voice! His face! The way he performs! ❤💔
Ted, you are the embodiment of Jesus. Now and forever. I cry every time I hear you sing this. The emotion, conviction and talent gives me chills. God bless you always. Much love.
Yes, I'm in tears everytime I hear it, he is able to portray such emotion, like he was there in Christ's body and transmitting to us his terrible pain inside his heart

You are so lucky ❤
You are a blessed man. Thank you.❤
I saw this at the cimema when it first came out, i cried from beginning to the end seen it hundreds of times since then and still cry. Know it word for word
The transition from his younger voice to his present one is just flawless. His voice did not change that much.
At some high-pitch parts it seemed overdubbed (mixed) by an earlier recording.
Nevertheless.........I allways admired his (original) performanse.
@@karelvandervelden8819 I think you're right. They're (the high parts) the 1973 vocals.
@@liamskopal7516Nope. Those are 2023 vocals. He's gotta be in his 70s, but the vocals in the video are modern. The man has taken care of his voice.
@@SarahBeach-jm9jpAnd his hair!
@@SarahBeach-jm9jpas much as I absolutely LOVE Ted Neeley, and will argue with anyone till I'm blue in the face that he sings this song better than anybody else on the planet, those high notes are definitely overdubbed. I've watched this movie probably at least 50 times and played him singing this song even more! I've also watched the live version of JCS 4 times with him in it and although he still has an amazing voice, he can't hit those high notes the same way that he could when he was in his 20's. If you compare the original soundtrack version and then compare those high notes you'll see that it's identical. Similarly if you watch other videos of him singing this live you'll see that his voice definitely sounds older and more ragged. But I will still sing his praises no matter what because I'm totally in awe of him, both as an actor and singer, but also as a wonderful and kind human being. I've met him after each and every performance and he's truly got a heart of gold!
This role was made for only you Ted! ♥️ Bravo 👏 👏

In awe...i saw him in the stage production when he was in his 60's!
Still hittin that high note....my Good Friday meditation for decades is to watch and contemplate on the movie....always brings the tears.
Thank you Ted for this wonderful movie, you put a smile on my face since I was 12 years old in 73.... God bless you and keep it simple, one day St a time ok? Linda
Even after 50 years…the goose bumps, chills, and yes, the tears are in full force. Very few people can bring forth such emotion from a performance. You can, Ted, and always could. Thank you.
At his age, that smooth rise from one knee.... as remarkable as his hitting those notes...
I saw you im memphis in the late 80's early 90's and you still bring me to tears. Thank you.
Absolutely phenomenal after all this time.
That’s totally insane , Ted singing this masterwork today like he did 50 years ago , hitting the same ridiculous high notes , is a true miracle. The greatest J.C. ever , unmatched by anyone. Love ya T. Neeley 💙
this is lipsynced. he is not singing live.
@@rohadtanyad8908 I kinda think so too... especially the scream has to be dubbed in and not currently can do at 80. A lot of it is current though, I'm sure. Saw him about 5-6 years ago in Detroit; he was great. Love every version he's ever sang of it. Amazing he's still doing it at all.

This man changed my life. I am agnostic, I never cared too much about religion, but the first time I watched Jesus Christ Superstar I was completely speechless. It was the first time I actually felt an overwhelming empathy for Jesus as a man with principles, so full of love and understanding, yet so human, with his own conflict of the mind and tragically abandoned by his own people...
This song, this interpretation moves mountains. I can never watch it without crying and reflecting on everything. I was never the same after watching it for the first time for sure. Thank you forever Ted Neeley.
That's exactly how I feel too.
Hermosas palabras hermano !
I'm in tears. I watch the '73 movie every Easter, and Ted Neeley's Gethsemane is by far my favourite.
Once I heard this song in the early nineties, being a 13 year old boy, I fell in love with JCSS. Now I'm 46, still love this music... this voice. TN, you are the only Jesus for me!
I was 12 in 73 when I saw this in the theater for the first time. The high G still gives me chills. Thank you Ted and the whole cast.
My parents had cable when it first came available in early 70s. This masterpiece was one of the movies that was continuosly shown commercial free! Watched it I don't know how many times as a preteen. Amazing every time, then and now 50 years later!
Your voice still gives me goosebumps and brings me to tears just like it did 50 years ago. I can’t count the number of times I’ve listened to you sing Gethsemane and I’m always awed by your voice.

This still breaks me down, even after 50+ years of listening. The power of the emotions just carry me away thru the pain and doubt of such a situation. It's not so much a religious thing, just plain human. Ted Neely's voice is so intense, you can't help but to go where it takes you. Thanks to all involved.

I wish they would!!!!
There will never be anyone that could sing that part better than him. His singing transcends all generations.
Agreed. He and Carl Anderson can't be topped.
Steve Balsamo is bloody amazing in the roll. His Gethsemane is STUNNING. To me, Ted Neeley and Steve Balsamo share the equal rights to the roll. It is like the roll of Dr. Frank'N'Furter from Rocky Horror, Tim Curry and David Bedella are both equally STUNNING in the roll as Frank.
Guess you never heard the original with Ian Gillan...
Ian Gillian is best.
Ian Gillan, who the role was written for was superior in my opinion. Ted should get on his hands and knees and thank Ian for giving him a career.
I have to say…I was blessed to see Ted Neely and cast performing this several years ago ….A-MAZING!!
Jesus Christ, SuperStar is also one of the first musicals I introduced to my children at a very young age. They went on to perform in theatre as young adults. Now, I will be passing on this phenomenal piece of work to a third generation….my grandchildren🥰
Never ever fails to reduce me to tears and awe. Ted Neeley was indeed born to play this role. I loved this musical on Broadway (my first one) and the movie blew my mind. I’ve watched it so many times and love it with my soul.
Ted Neeley, Thank you for everything! I watched JCS as a teenager in the 80s and my life has never been the same. You were my introduction to what Jesus acted like, looked like, mannerisms, everything. I have watched the movie probably 30 times; always at Christmastime when I think of the Savior. Your life's work has been of the highest cause changing millions of lives.
This song will ALWAYS be my favorite scene in JCSS! Ted’s depiction of Jesus was spot on and this song is his crowning glory! His soulful, hauntingly beautiful voice and his masterful perfect delivery STILL takes my breath away! I feel every word of this song while he’s singing! BRAVO Ted!! 🥹♥️👏🏾🔥🙏🏾☦️
We saw him in Boston 50 years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar and his voice is just as strong as when he was 29. I can’t remember the Theater it was probably Wilbur Theater 🎹
I cried when I when I saw this at age 15 and I still cry today. So powerful!
ed is blessed with a screaming guitar of a voice and we’re blessed that he can still hit these unsingable notes at his age. Thank you, Ted. Loved your voice when I was eight and singing Gethsemane from my apartment balcony with my friends.
Most of the real high notes in this version are overdubbed from the 1970 movie. However, the rest of his performance is still spectacular especially for a man in his 80s.
That was awesome, He still sounds great.
Would love if they released a 50th anniversary DVD with special features and interviews from the actors ❤
Yeah that would be super cool! Are you listening Hollywood?😊
They are on strike. So no they are not listening
I watched this movie when I was in high school. From that day on I have watched when I can. I know the songs by heart and sing along. It still gets to me everytime. Ted Neeley is the best!
Thank you, Ted Neely, for your incredible inspired performances of JSC, especially of this song. Heartbreaking.
Gut wrenching.
Inspired.
How awesome that you still crush it 50 years after the film.
I was a young girl when the film came out in 1973. Cried when i first saw this scene. And every time after, even now.
You captured the anguish, doubt, pain, reluctance to die that every human feels. I think that's why so many, even non Christians, love the film.
No other can touch your performance or Carl Anderson's.
I grew up performances martial law and Mr. Anderson accurately depicted the ptsd of someone who's lived under the shadow of constant repression. He made us see that Judas wasn't simply mad at Jesus, he was terrified for his beloved teacher and worried for his people. Then horrified that he himself the terrible role im God's plan.
You both revealed such complexity humanity to Jesus and Judas; clearly showed the parallel's in their personal agonies.
That's why millions have been moved. And many more will be.
God bless you!

I was on YT last night and ran across this song. I had never really even listened to Jesus Christ Superstar and I even grew up when it was made, I am so ashamed to even say that. I got chills listening to it. He puts his heart and soul into this song. It is amazing. This is his song. I have always loved Andrew Lloyd Webber's works. This is a great song for Easter since this is Good Friday. What a voice, amazing.
Ted, you are still absolutely the best in the role. You vocals are amazing, even 50 years later! I wish you could do one more tour.
I just rewatched JCS again today. I love this film so much. I also saw it on Broadway back in the day. Then about 4 years ago I went to a showing of the film in CT. Spent a lot of time with Ted. He's is just the most lovely man I have ever met.
Mr. Neeley, Bravo. I saw this movie when it came out in the 1970's. I also saw you and the crew live at the local theatre centre in the 1990's. I remember some women were crying and didn't want to leave. I thank you for your part in what you have done to enlighten others.
The passion and emotion he conveys have taken my breath away since i can remember. This song and particularly his stunning performance literally got me out of depression at one point, the way his portrayal of Jesus surrendered to his fate helped me to accept my circumstances at the time. Ted really channels something spiritual and i'm thankful for him.
This came out when I was in the Navy. I had the whole movie memorized and would sing it twice on sounding and security watch every fourth day.
I would love to have seen this performance live. I believe Ted Neeley played the best Jesus. His voice is amazing, when he hits that high note, wow! he is a true rockstar. God Bless and Happy Easter. 2024❤
I'm in tears while watching this. It's always been my favorite scene, but this performance is beyond superb. Ted, your voice has gotten richer with time. Absolutely show-stopping rendition. Thank you for 50 wonderful years. 🥰
