Wes Barker is a Canadian magician and comedian doing funny tricks, and telling great stories. You may know me from my TV show Big Trick Energy (truTV, Hulu, Netflix). Watch here for hilarious, ridiculous, and unfiltered ideas with magic, stunts, and pranks. Either I'm the funniest magician who is also a stand-up comic, or maybe I'm the comic who is the best at magic? Either way you get the idea. I tour all over doing colleges, comedy clubs, and corporate events. Catch the adventures and tricks right here. With this magician / comedian from Vancouver, based out of Toronto, Canada. I make funny stuff. That’s my only rule. Everything has to be funny, from street magic to stage illusions, as long as there is a joke to be made. I do magic tricks, sketches, stand-up comedy, card tricks, mind reading, and tricks with naked people. I’ve been on America’s Got Talent, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, MTV Greatest Party Stories Ever, and Wizard Wars. You can find me pulling pranks on friends, gags on strangers, or just general sleight of hand, magic, illusions, and the occasional bar bet. Wes Barker also hosts a podcast with Chris Ramsay called Bottom Of The Barrel. Go check it out!

    Man! Few reactions:
    1) Love it. Very interesting and so on. Excited for the next part of this.
    2) Feeling bad and paranoid now.
    3) Here's a scam I recently heard of. Find an online shop were you can offer your own stuff for sale. (In Germany eBay has this feature.) Find someone elses offer in the shop and copy it. Same pictures, same description, same everything. Send a message to the owner of the original offer, claiming that you are interested and asking for payment information. Wait until someone wants to buy your fake offer and forward the original payment information to the buyer. Send another message to the owner of the original offer, that you are about to send the money. The buyer will pay the original owner, who will think, that you payed him and send the stuff to you. Just don't give your address but a post box or something like that.

Great video Wes! I haven't put as much research into cons, but I like learning about scams and this is in a similar vein.
I got conned once in Memphis Tennessee on Beale Street. I really needed to use a restroom and didn't know where to find one (otherwise I don't think I would have responded) when a guy came up and said hi (and asked where I'm from like one other commenter mentioned). I asked him if he knew where a bathroom was and he said he did and walked with me. He told me that Beale Street charges for people to go onto the street at night (which used to be true, but wasn't anymore at the time). I didn't have any cash on me and he said I needed cash and there was an ATM on the way to the bathroom. He also said he was raising money for veterans and asked for a donation since I was pulling out money anyway. So, I gave him some money and I'm very confident it didn't go to any veterans. He did show me where a free bathroom was though, so I just consider it a payment for much needed directions. I also had a little bit of cash after that since I didn't need it to get on Beale Street.

  • @russellscott1466
    @russellscott1466 Před 2 lety

So I fell for a con that was a blend of fake construction worker and pig in a poke. Had a guy approach me in a parking lot. He had a logo shirt with something like Alpine Pro Audio and he's spinning a story about how he just finished an install at a local club, and there was an extra pair of "high end" speakers that weren't on his invoice, so the club didn't want them and his company didn't know he had them. They cost "thousands of dollars," but he will sell them for what ever I could come up with. He had sales brochures, etc. to back up how "valuable" these speakers were. When I realized I'd been taken, my dad (doing the dad job) reminded me that even if it hadn't been a con, that guy was asking me to do something that wasn't right. So many of these cons play on our greed and the fact we don't know the "victim". Good vid, Wes.

If you like cons and heists so much, you should check out a british show from the 2000's I believe, maybe 2010's, called Hustle. It was basically a bunch of con artists, with a kind of code that kept them only conning a-holes who could afford it. Excellent show and the cons were all so very clever. I'm pretty sure they showed variations to every one of the cons you talked about here.

The watermelon con is still really common in New York City (and presumably other touristy areas), but the items dropped are usually eyeglasses or food of some kind. It's easier to scam 100 tourists out of $10-$20 for "dropped" take-out than 1 or 2 marks out of hundreds of dollars for a new laptop. If it happens to you, don't stop. Hell, don't even acknowledge them, just keep on walking. They're usually not looking to mug or harm you and they don't want to draw attention to their grift. They'll just pick up their bag/box of food and try again with the next tourist.
I fell for a variation of Pig in a Poke while leaving a concert when I was about 25. (God, this is embarrassing . . .) Some dude out on the sidewalk offered me weed. I was like, "Hey, I like weed!" so I went to an ATM for 20 bucks. The transaction was made and from a quick glance---obviously I couldn't closely inspect it, hold it up to a light, give it a big ol' sniff---it looked like three nugs wrapped up in cigarette cellophane. When I got home I discovered my "nugs" were wadded up pages torn from a yellow phone book. I was mad for a few seconds, then my roommate and I started cracking up. Serves me right for buying drugs from a sketchy dude on the street. Now I just go to a dispensary like a grown-up.

Brown, mildewy shwag with giant stems and tons of seeds, often crushed because they were smashed into bricks. Or, just like you said, bags of shake and stems, hahaha. It was so long ago that I actually *forgot* that we'd have to de-seed our bags. I can't even remember the last time I saw a seed! My how things have changed.

I think someone tried your Paris scam on me in Paris once. As soon as he "picked up" the ring from the ground in front of me I knew something was off, but didn't know what the scam was going to be (I was worried it was going to be slight of hand to take something of mine). So I brought my hands up and said, "Don't come any closer." in English. He apologised and walked away.

(Before you read on I had all my belongings with me so I couldn't help tho I want to say something).
I was in Barcelona at some park relaxing before I had to catch a bus that day.
I saw two nicely dressed tourists walking quickly towards the exit of the park.
A man came up from behind and sprayed them with some kind of liquid without them noticing and then ran away.
Shortly after a woman came up to the tourists and said there is something on their backs. She helped them clean them up a bit and then the guy came back and offered to help too.
The two thieves then walked the two tourists over to a water fountain nearby. And once the two tourists put down their bags the two thieves grabbed them and ran away.

It's very good to hear about these things. We were in the parking lot of a Dennys in the states. A guy comes up and says his car has broken down and has to take a cab to get his wife who's stranded.
He had barely said it, my other half was thinking about it...
But I had heard about a similar scam.
So before I think, I blurt out. Oh no I've heard this one it's a trick. No way we are going and take my hubs arm and we walk away quick.
Hub is saying no wait what do you mean? We got inside I explained and we told the Manger who called the cops. (Who did show up this was a few years ago.)
I may add that the parking lot was awkwardly located so you had to walk around to the front of the Dennys. So that did make my hub nervous he could have turned mugger too! But good to know about these things thanks

If the girl that "found" the ring looked homeless, I probably would have given her the card with the phone number on it, promising that a woman will give you $3000 for it, OR propose that we share the $3000. I’d never give anyone money just because they demanded that I should I also likely wouldn’t even have much on me I only tend to carry what I need

I am ashamed to admit, that I have been scamed twice... by stupid scams, I should have known better, but anyway ^^. (I'd say it's at the "wallet inspector" level)...
From the last one, here we have a saying "cuidado que no te pasen gato por liebre" literal translation is "beware that they don't give you a cat for a hare"... and it is preatty much the same idea, ask for a hare and they give you a cat. The usage is somewhat obvious, don't let people give you something you don't want or switch what you expected.

Update Video: selling old IPhone on marketplace and being robbed. “So he’s getting the money”?😂😂😂.
Wish this interaction was on video. Wonder if the two that robbed you have their own podcast where they go over how to take advantage of someone and steal their IPhone. #imgonnarobyou

If someone walks up to you and asks if you want to go for a drink away from all the tourist areas for something more traditional, you are a mark.
If someone offers to do a currency exchange on the street, you are a mark.
If someone says, hey you didn’t pay the full amount of foreign currency, you are a mark.
If someone demands you pay exact change in foreign currency, you are a mark.

@@WesBarker is the room bigger? You might want some room treatment. A thick blanket hanging behind the camera could already work. It catches the reverberating sound and reduces the echo without ruining your backdrop.

Fun fact: There is a German saying about the pig in the poke thing. Translated to English it would be: You never buy a cat in a bag.
This was great and very informative. I think I'm a lot safer now on not getting scammed by anyone. Thanks Wes ;)
