In the movie, a couple of the tribes are headed by women. In South East Asia, the Minangkabau of Sumatera Indonesia and Negeri Sembilan Malaysia till today still practices Adat Perpatih which is a type of women/matrilineal system. Their tribes' heritage land ( tanah pusaka adat) is passed from mother to daughters only. Cool that somehow it is reflected in the movie

And in Philippines, we have 2 former Presidents. And woman has equal opportunity with men in all aspects in every things. Proud to be Southeast Asian.
Not only in Minang culture. Malay have powerful queens ruling ancient kingdoms like Cik Siti Wan Kembang and Puteri Saadong. And Javanese people called their kingdom as Keraton (Ke-ratu-an) which actually is like a "Queendom" instead of kingdom.

I know alot of us arent satisfied with the amount of south east asians in the cast (kelly being the only) but we rlly hv to appreciate that theyre all *asian* instead of the whole cast being white with one or two asians in general. This might be two steps forward one step back but its still one step forward. Things like this dont change overnight, it changes gradually. Its changing. Ill be looking forward to better casting in the future but rn this is ok

Personally I disagree with this take. Mulan was East Asian representation especially in cultural takes, raya was south East Asian representation and their cultures are actually very different (apart from Vietnam) and they didn’t quite show off their culture or races. It was just kinda like saying we are all the same cuz of the word Asian

@Charity Rama I agree. As a SEA as well, I kind of felt Alienated watching this video. The cast are all comprised of great people, but I just didn’t feel at home watching this video.
@Charity Rama i am extremely happy with the way the movie turned out, but i agree with you as well. i felt that there could've been more personal touches to the characters maybe in the way they spoke and moved. also, majority of the cast being east asian has always bothered me. but two steps forward one step back is better than nothing i guess!

Even though they used a lot of more well-known EA names with the adults (exception of SEA Kelly) the two kids in the movie are SEA too even though they're not in this video, and I think that was a great idea to bring in newcomer SEA kids like that. A movie like this should be a shared accomplishment of AsAms/Euros and should be celebrated without such divisiveness among the AsAm/Euro community. We're all in this together.
Movie is very good, no doubt..about "perfection" in casting, i don't know..movie's set is in Southeast Asia and the voice actors are East Asian except for one..

being kind is doing the best thing for someone. sometimes, telling someone the truth is the kindest thing you can do. kindness is probably better than honesty there.
The only problem I have with the cast is that only Raya is actually part South East Asian.
I mean if they could hire ones of China, HongKong, and South Korean decent, why not of actual SouthEast Asian decent?
