      Elijah, I have been listening to great music wherever and whenever I can find it - for a very long time - probably close to fifty years now. I only discovered your grandfather's wonderful and truly amazing music a few years ago - and I am only now just picking my jaw up off the floor. Talent like his comes along so seldom. Just glad we have his recordings to enjoy. I wish I could have seen him in person live; that would have been an amazing experience.

    That is my late Uncle Phil. It is my understanding that the studio he had with Charlie Pride helped shine some light on Lady Antebellum. I think that is what he took joy in; giving others that hand up. It is unfortunate that I only saw him perform once in my home town in California.

    I was fortunate to see and tape Phil at Scotty's Steel Guitar Convention in St. Louis in 1976, where you can hear the audience gasp at the sounds he produces with his CBS-era modified Fender Jaguar/Pitch Pedal arrangement-I play this recording for others and delight in seeing their jaws drop to the floor.

    I've been playing guitar for 32 years and early on I began listening to and reading about the influence's of my influence's as well as searching early guitar players and discovering guitarists that I've never heard of. Which is how I found this video Gem. All I can say is WOW! What a picker!
    It's amazing how all of the past greats like Les Paul, Jimmy Bryant & Speedy West, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Eddie Lang, Carl Perkins and Mickey Baker etc. were way ahead of their time. The articulation and technique those legends had were almost other worldly.

    • @101Volts
      @101Volts Před 9 lety +3

      +GuitarGuys7299 The more you listen the more you may find how interconnected it all is. For example, Semie Moseley (Head of Mosrite guitars, and Phil is playing a Mosrite in this video) was a fan of Les Paul. Mr. Moseley could play well too, some time ago (1991) there was a concert (and footage of which was uploaded to CZcams) where he played in with Nokie Edwards of The Ventures. And, The Ventures had their own Mosrite guitar model - which was going to be Joe Maphis' model until the Ventures heard of it...

      Very cool. Thanks for sharing this with me.
      The Ventures is one of my favorite groups from that genre. Along with Jan & Dean and the Safari's etc.... And yes you're right about how everything interconnects. It's fun to listen and pick out little things here and there that were being emulated by my influences.

This clip reveals clean technique, finger rolls ala "Jeff's, (Beck), Boogie," arpeggios, tones and tensions, and good speed. I'll never forget him. I also met his son Phil Jr. A gentleman. He also posseses a box of reel to reels of his famous Dad. Where are you?

This video sounds more along the lines of the Light Crust Doughboys, so maybe Phil Baugh was in one of these bands. I have also heard Flatt & Scruggs doing a tune called "Martha White Flour" and they mention how it was a sponsor of theirs in Nashville. Could be how the "Doughboy" bands got their names.
