Listened to this again 4 years later, it blends in with the original 2000s discography perfectly.
While a bit abstract, this music video does a lot in the way of capturing the Americana/heartland rock side of Jimmy Eat World. This song is a fantastic slice of it and the video delivers that too. I’m currently sitting in a bed in rural Japan, but that feeling in this song and video takes me back to going to the bowling alley and movies with high school friends back in America. Gosh I love Jimmy Eat World.
This video was filmed in my hometown of Geneva On The Lake in Ohio and it does a good job of representing how it feels to grow up there.
My broken headphone started working just long enough for me to listen to this in both ears. Blessed.

[This is an answer to Lowery02 question] I was there for 4 hours of shooting(background actor). The hotel that is in the one scene, is the Pera Motel off of Golf Drive. That is where the Wardrobe was and where we had our makeup put on. The scene where the female hero is playing pool as well as where the male hero is having breakfast was filmed in the High Tide Tavern on the corner of Lake Road E. and Lakegrove ave. I was only there for those two scenes. It was fast, a lot of fun, but we had to focus and get it done because there was a deadline. I had not been to Geneva-on-the-Lake before, but I frequently go swimming in the summer at Headlands Beach State Park down the road on the coast next to Fairport Harbor, Ohio.
This is very much legitimately filmed less that a quarter of a mile from my girlfriends house

I rocked out to Jimmy Eat World when I graduated HS in 2004, the Futures album was made for me, it’s carried me through many chapters of adulthood. When they released this it became my jam on the way to work as 37 yr old, such an underrated classic.

2 years late to the video-watching party but I’m BROKEN that these two special, unique main characters that the video was clearly trying to make us believe were meant for each other - I’m so upset they never meet!
The characters are depicted to be enjoying their lives, not necessarily longing for someone or something. And the song does say "Whoever says they hope they meet the one at a bar drinking early", implying its not realistic to think they have to meet, fall in love etc. Though there is the possiblity that had these two met, it could have gotten somewhere, them not meeting is bittersweet, like most things in life.
Thats my interpretation at least.
Many bands have come and gone, stopped listening here and there, but Jimmy Eat World has been my first and longest-lasting band. Started listening to them in 2006, just before Chase this light was released. There's always at least one song on every album that I keep listening on repeat, but, this might just be my absolute all-time favorite Jimmy Eat World song 🙂🙂
Also, is it just me or does the guy in this video look exactly like Troy Baker? The ressemblence is actually frightening 😀😀

This. Is. Awesome. I would honestly put this shoulder-to-shoulder with the very best work of Jimmy Eat World. I’d decided it was a stone cold classic about halfway through - that chorus! But then the saxophone solo kicked in and it somehow got even better - like some kind of fantastic E Street party jam. Then - then! - those lovely female backing vocals arrived to see the song out, and by that point I was in heaven.
On a side note I have to say the final year of the 2010s has been absolutely vintage for new music, particularly older bands releasing new music, this song being a prime example.

Jimmy Eat World has literally blown me away with everything they've put out for a solid 18 years now. This song, part Bleed American meets Damage albums, circa early 2000's vibe, but modern. Finding new boundaries (a saxophone solo? Hell yes.) while continously evolving their sound and perfecting their stories.
This is real music, most bands can't release 4 good songs, JEW has 400 and they're all amazing. Thank you for being part of my life. I appreciate this music more than I can say.

I did not expect the sax solo here but it works - esp. towards the end of the song. It oozes melancholy and nostalgia, and, musically, gives the song a Springsteenesque feel. Which is a good thing.

Ross Chalmers you're absolutely right. I didn't mean it as a negative at all- I yearn for the Futures days as it's my favourite album by any band ever. But there's a fresh twist to this that combines the best of both worlds.

This is a great song. A Great song. We observe the vulnerability of each of them. I love Jimmy Eat World, and I've never made a comment about them before. This song deserves a tribute beyond (and maybe even above and beyond) this music video, though I applaud what we see here for its authenticity, its earnestness, and its creativity. The song suggests a noble yet sombre ultimatum (If you leave.... well... I guess we're each on our own), one that I think just about darn well all of us can relate to since the ride never ends.

In the drum-beat (1-1-2-2-1-1-2-2-), I can hear a throwback to 1950s America, where, whether real or just a figment of our fallible collective memory, we see the hallmarks of a somehow-innocent world. (How could it ever have been innocent, knowing what we know?) That world may not exist anymore, except within the people featured (Imagined? Remembered? Reflected...?) within this song... A montage-a montage to what our society may have otherwise permitted. A world forsaken by accident... What could have been.... What might have become... What is the otherwise...? What cost us this...? Saxophone, play us out... You're all we have left.
