🍿 The Twilight Zone 'The Masks' is NIGHTMARE FUEL
🎬 Connor once again enters a wondrous land of imagination. But wondrous may not be the appropriate word. Here, Rod Serling wrote a personality-scathing script and combined it with some of the most disturbing visuals seen in The Twilight Zone. Grab your mask for this one...

This one freaked me out so bad for years after I saw it as a kid. I was scared to wear a mask because of this and the Goosebumps episode.

What's very interesting here, is that each member of the family represents an aspect of Jason's personality. His son-in-law is a heartless business man, who could that possibly allude to? I doubt Jason made his fortune off of his kindness. His daughter is a worrying coward? Can you imagine living your entire life under this guy's roof? The grandson is cruel. There seems to be no small streak of cruelty in Jason, and the actions he takes, like torturing his 'loved ones', and delighting in their suffering. The granddaughter is vain, and so is _Jason._ This night is *his* night, it's all about him; _his_ death, _his_ fortune, _his_ opportunity to vent his spleen, and enforce his will one final time.
They say we hate most in others that which we see in ourselves. That is what this episode is about.

I recently was talking about this episode with a friend. And we discussed how the mask can be seen as a metaphor for mental health conditions. As the husband has an interest in stuff that has value & weight. Which could mean he's materialistic/hoarder. The wife only thinks that she has it hard. Which is a sign of covert narcissism the son shows signs of psychopathic tendencies. And finally, the daughter seems to have body dysmorphia as she's always looking at herself.

Growing up I had a DVD box that was something of a "best of" of The Twilight Zone, and this was one of my favorite episodes. Something about the mask designs and the makeup of the transformed family's faces really made me shudder as a teenager!

I loved this episode. Ida Lupino was an excellent director, and I only wish that TZ lasted a little longer so they could give her another episode or two.
The actor who surprised me the most was Milton Selzer, an actor whom I never really noticed when I first became a fan of Twilight Zone. He had appeared previously in Hocus Pocus and Frisby as the main alien spokesperson, and once I became aware of him, I noticed that he had a talent for adding something to the smallest roles. He was on Mission Impossible a number of times because he made a great villain and looked like a Russian soldier. He never really became a big star, but he was always very noticeable.
As Wilfred Harper Sr., he came across as equally venal as the rest of the family, but one absolutely true to himself. There were several moments when Wilfred looked askance in the direction of the camera as if disgusted by something his family did but not really caring. Just this dry little look that says, "Yeah, I know my family are a bunch of s__ts, but whatever." It added much to his character. When he walked Dr Thorne out and he dryly asks, "The old boy's in bad shape," and the Doctor responds, "The old boy is dying," the look on Selzer's face is wonderful. He's a nasty little man waiting for Jason to just die already, but he probably wouldn't have cared much if Jason had lived one more day.
And there's Robert Keith's Jason Foster, who was intriguing to say the least. I always thought Robert Keith (father of Brian Keith) sounded a bit like Vincent Price.🤣 Many people see Jason as the villain of the peace, but I disagree. He's actually the most straightforward character in the episode. Since the other members of the family are "caricatures," he has long lost all patience with any of them, and he is acting simply by rote. But he is not a villain - if he were, his servants and the Doctor would reflect this. And they don't. We see their little smiles when Jason lashes out, expecting it but not taking him seriously. The servants probably know the real Jason Foster far better than members of his own family. They respect Jason, are proud to work for him, and are willing to help him. And Dr Thorne, having cared for Jason presumably for many years, puts up with his carping, but cannot help a quiet laugh when Jason spews a little bile his direction. Keith is wonderful in the role.
The one thing I had a problem with were the masks themselves: they looked like cheap little plastic masks one would find at a dollar store. I'm sure that was because of budget and time, but it might have worked better had they looked even more monstrous - as exaggerated caricatures of the actors themselves, kinda like the puppet faces from Spitting Image. I admit they did a fair job depicting the not-so-hidden personalities of the family, but they certainly don't look as if they were "made by an old Cajun."
Still, watching everyone taking their masks off to reveal their new features was a horror I didn't expect when I first watched the episode. And when the Doctor took Jason's mask off to reveal his unchanged face ("This must be death - no horror, no fear - nothing but peace.") was a lovely moment, which revealed Jason's real character. He didn't deserve the desecration his nasty family received, and didn't get it.
