1996 Intruder 800 introduction

  • I recently had the chance to pickup another Intruder. This time, I got the 800cc version instead of the 1400cc big brother. While smaller overall, the newest member of the stable is very, very clean. In this video, I take it out for a short ride after replacing a couple of things and tweaking the carburetors. She is a fine cruiser!

    I have a 95 VS800 with 19,000 miles on it and looks like it came off the showroom floor. Mine is the maroon color and I absolutely love that bike. I’m 5’8 and it fits me like a glove. I bought a Honda Valkyrie a couple weeks ago and that bike is a beast. To my surprise, both bikes have the same riding possession, I felt right at home on the Honda. I’ll keep my Intruder as well, I love it. By the way, reset your odometer to zero every time you fuel up and around 90 miles, start looking for a gas station.

      The only thing is when I was out riding, and you know how it is you have no destination when your on a bike lol, I started having trouble getting it out of 1st becuase it seemed that it wanted to jump and stall. So I took off the hydraulic clutch cap and put it back on and the clutch was fine then. I guess it was an air pocket or something. Seemed like the damndest thing lol. Other then that ive had no issues with it so far

    • @FloridaTwoWheelAdventures
      @FloridaTwoWheelAdventures  Před 4 lety

      Tyler Freeman you’ll want to flush and bleed both the clutch and brake system every 2 seasons. They’re both notorious for trapped air pockets usually at the banjo connection. It can be tricky to get the air released. You’ll have the problem again because just taking the cover off didn’t release any trapped air. There’s enough of an air gap between the fluid and the cover where it already released. Upgrading to braided stainless steel lines Will make a big difference too. 👍

    It sounds really good, I looked at one recently and I think I have to buy one😅
    As for fuel, I don't think that's going to be a problem, I'm thinking of switching out the motor for a diesel V twin from Punsun/Winsun with just enough legroom to keep it in higway speed with more juice if needed, but fuel wise, it has to be diesel because gasoline uses just as much as a regular small car. It isn't much, but for long distances, it makes all the difference.
    For gearing, I need to figure out if transmission is possible or it has to be CVT.
    I'm all for being lazy, so maybe a CVT😁

    • @FloridaTwoWheelAdventures
      @FloridaTwoWheelAdventures  Před měsícem

      Well there’s a couple options or possibilities there. I’d first make sure the plug in that cylinder is good. Maybe swap them out for iridium plugs anyway. Make sure the spark is good and strong. Bad grounds are common on these. More than likely, you’re probably looking at an out of balance low idle circuit otherwise called the air fuel mixture. This is evident when it’s backfiring at idle or just off idle. Bad fuel, dirty carbs, or bad hoses can also be messing with it. There’s a boot that connects to each carb which has failed on me in the past and allows for air to be sucked in. The boot will collapse under throttle. Lastly, you’ll need to check the balancing of both carbs. That’s a little more work and will involve vacuum gauges but it’s not terribly hard. This is noticed in the 2k or so RPM range. When balancing the carbs you need to partially raise idle with the throttle to get the readings. One last tip, run some type of fuel cleaner in the bike every other tank or so. Seafoam is a popular choice but a good fuel system cleaner will do the trick. You do not want trash fuel in the tank because it will clog the jets and vanish the carbs. If available, run pure gas (ethanol free) in whatever grade you can get close to 87 octane. High octane fuel is of no real benefit to these engines. It won’t hurt anything necessarily except your wallet. I just run whatever pure gas I can get along with a few ounces of Seafoam every 1 or 2 tanks to keep stuff clean. A few ounces per tank is fine for maintenance. Good luck!

      I’ve got a set of OEM drag bars for my current 1996 VS1400 but I’ve never wanted to change them. I think the cables and hoses are long enough but the bars are internally wired so I understand that’s quite a pain in the ass to swap. If you add risers, you might run into some length problems so pay attention to that.

      @@FloridaTwoWheelAdventures yeah I'm looking the oem drags on ebay also, the T bars off marauder may fit..... The old school ram horns fit the bike though also, naturally when you hold out your arms they kind of are angled a little bit like that. You don't hold your arms perfectly straight when you're just naturally holding them out

      @@BuiltDifferent13 I really like the stock bars anyway so that’s why I never changed them. The guy I got the bike from already had the drag bars and gave them to me. I thought about trying them but they look too much like beach bars which I don’t really like. I sold the 800 in this video and have a slightly rougher looking 1400 now.

      wolfgang1691 yea, I hope so got about 1500 bucks total in it so far. Gave up on trying to sync the carbs by ear and broke down and ordered a morgan carb tune to hopefully get the carbs dialed in. Got some smoke out of the front cylinder a few times, hope the valve guide seals are not shot, got 190+ compression on both cylinders and only 14000 miles on the bike so I doubt it is bad rings or blow by.

      What's wrong with it? They're rather simple bikes to work on if you have some basic tools and a little knowledge. The hardest thing on these damn bikes are the carbs.

      Matt Dawson yes my brother has this exact same bike for his first bike and he loves it. I'm a bigger guy so I went with a bigger bike for my first. I have a 2000 Suzuki Intruder 1500.

    • @FloridaTwoWheelAdventures
      @FloridaTwoWheelAdventures  Před 6 lety

      NW Oista the 1400 has a slightly larger feel to it in the rider’s cockpit. So it’s a little better for longer distance, although not ideal. In terms of performance, the 800 is actually a bit quicker off the line due to the lighter weight but it’s too end is not as good as the 1400. I’ve owned both and wouldn’t hesitate to buy either again.

    Old sportster were 2.25 gallons. This bike was designed to give sportster competition. The old timers always carried a bottle of gas, about 16 ounces, for emergency. Don't expect something the bike wasn't made for. Get a old time sportster, and do 3000 miles. Your back, your ass and legs will ache. If you want to do 3000 miles, 750 Honda. Good seat ,comfortable all the way around.

      Oh I agree! This bike is designed for short rides. I’m in the process of buying another one, only it’s a 1400. I took my first 1400 cross country a couple times and hated it but the new one will be for local rides. My Triumph is my long distance bike. Thanks for the comments!

  • @Fantasiawave

    I have a Suzuki Intruder 800 1996 also same color same style but the battery is in the front of the bike just behind the Fork that is a pain in the ass to get the battery out you have to Jack the bike up off the ground in order to drop the door to get the battery out that is one of the stupidest things they did on that bike. Otherwise that bike is great wonderful and comfortable but it doesn't have a lot of power for an 800 it is surprising to me. I have a Yamaha V Star 650 2007 that drives better then this one does and this is higher powered but it drives like it has no power at all. the pipes I should have changed into something noisy because I feel like I'm on a grandma bike beautiful bike love the color that's why I bought it turquoise is the color turquoise not a football color

    be more prepared when you get a new bike. I live in the lawn mower world and you would be surprised by how much money people spend on thinking the mower is broke, when the simply didn't have any gas.. the 800s not gonna burn fuel like a 1400. especially if you ride it like a pee paw after you throw it on reserve.

    • @FloridaTwoWheelAdventures
      @FloridaTwoWheelAdventures  Před 6 lety +4

      Kevin Wilkerson oh now! This particular motorcycle isn’t intended for long distance rides so the tank is quite sufficient. Besides a larger tank would negatively affect the sleek lines of the cruiser.
