The title of the song means "Father of all" and is in Old Nordic.
The first invocation is towards Odin's ring. Draupnir or Draupner was the magic ring that was given to Odin by the dwarf Brok, who created it with his brother Sindre. It had the power to make eight copies of equal value every nine nights.
The second invocation is to the wolves that accompany the god Odin. Geri and Freki. The translation of their names would be "ravenous and greedy"
The third invocation is to Sleipnir, Odin's horse. In Scandinavian mythology, Sleipnir or Sleipner (from Old Norse: "the slippery") is an eight-legged gray horse belonging to the god. Sleipnir is mentioned in the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, the latter of which was written by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century. In both sources it is indicated that Sleipnir belonged to Odin, and was the son of Loki and Svaðilfari "from the Old Norse 'unfortunate traveler'" Svaðilfar is a stallion horse that begets the eight-legged horse Sleipnir with Loki (who took the form of a mare) . Svaðilfari belonged to a giant they called Hrimthurs. This giant was the one who built the walls of Asgard. Sleipnir is described as the best of horses, and is sometimes ridden by Odin in battles and even to reach the realm of death ... Hel. The Prose Edda indicates that he was gray. He was so fast that he could go from one end of the horizon to the other in a single day. Sleipnir symbolizes the eight winds that blow from their respective cardinal points. Another feature is that he had runes engraved on his teeth.
The fourth invocation is for the ravens of Odin, Hugin and Munin. In Norse mythology Hugin and Munin, are a pair of ravens associated with the god Odin. Hugin and Munin traveled around the world collecting news and information for Odin. Hugin is the "thought" and Munin is the "memory." Both were sent at dawn to collect information and returned in the afternoon. They perched on the god's shoulders and whispered all the news into his ears.
The spear of Odin is also named. Gungnir or Gungner was Odin's spear. The word means production of a violent tremor or shaking, as it supposedly shook anyone who was struck by it vividly. According to mythology, it was made by the sons of Ivald (the dwarves), and was given to Odin by Loki in compensation for stealing Sif's hair. Sif was the wife of the god thor. Odin launches onto the battlefield wearing a golden helmet, glowing armor, and his Gungnir spear.
The word "gægogæ" appears to be a kind of magical invocation or battle cry present in a 5th century medallion / coin inscription, and is comparable to the "g͡ag͡ag͡a" of the Spear of Kragehul I, which is also believed to be a war cry or chant.
I shout, shout, shout this spear. Gaegogae, Gaegogae, Gaegogae screamed loudly.
The fifth invocation is to the god Odin, calling him by all the names by which he was known.

red-haired, hooded, wand-bearer, famous lord,
god of the hanged, wanderer of the mist,
the needy, father of Yule, the tall,

who throws the spear, shining eye,
shaking spear / shield, leader of the people,
the one with knowledge, bearer of cloak,
keeper of secrets, the terrible, the stormy.

One major correction- the English title probably _should_ be "Names of the Allfather".
Alfadhir being "Allfather" and "Heitir" being "Names".

@@chriswedemann8599 Only after fornyrðislag gave way to malaháttr and ljóðaháttr. The (Christian) nobility came to appreciate the more intricate Skaldic metres at the court of their kings, though fornyrðislag remained a formal metre for some time. The transition of OldNorse and fashion eventually degraded the popularity of kviðuháttr, galdralag and fornyrðislag at courts and halls. The old kennings slowly became too alien (and pagan) for the listeners and Icelandic poets were needed to sing the deeds of the kings. That's the possible reason the Proze Edda was composed by Snorri: so not to forget what was handed down through the ages. Galdralag and the other 'old' metres possibly remained popular longer on the countryside where the dawning of christianity was slower and the old (galdr!) ways were observed the longest.

The crowd sucks in this song. They seem bored. If Odin himself showed up and did magic they wouldn't even react.
4 years since this, and still could not believe this was their first performance live. But as the group evolves, from this summer stream from Alcatraz, could as one thing say that male lead Kai Uwe Faust has gotten even better putting more variety on his performance, which makes Heilung experience even greater than before, if possible.
I hear and see a beauty in the simplicity of this performance. I have always loved acoustic versions of songs, and that might be why I love the simplicity of this performance more than other videos Elizabeth has reacted to.
The biggest thing that stood out to me was Maria Franz smiling more in the Alcatraz one when compared to LIFA.
I I seen that performance... accidentally. :D I was at Castlefest with some friends, we just went towards to main stage. We didn't know about this performance we just had hear something different and powerful happening there. I'm glad that we were there in the right moment.
Comparing the warriors to zombies is actually not far from the mythology around Oðin. Half of the slain after a battle went to Valhalla, Oðin's Hall, to fight and prepare for the end of days, Ragnarök. They were called the Einherjar, and were quite actually an army of the dead, aka zombies.

That's not necessarily, wholely accurate. Of the dead warriors, the best of them where chosen by Frejya to go to her Hall, with the other half of honorable dead going with Odin to his Hall. But there were not many chosen, definitely not half the dead. A majority would've headed to Helhiem to live in the summer lands there, with the other part of their soul traveling to Helgafjell to be with their ancestors, and the third staying to guard the body after death.
@@TheCharismaticVoice I mean, they are definitely the resurrected dead, but they're conscious and brought back whole each time. Between battles they feast and enjoy all the good things life held for them, in Valhalla, the hall of the brave. Feasting, music, carousing and laughter is the order of the day there, and then they go out to fight again, and to be resurrected again if they fall. Kinda zombies, but you could have a good conversation with them in Valhalla.

@@Ahonya666 Yeah, if you read Helgevar, The Road to Hell, there's an obvious section where Helheim is described as a land of green life. The land of frost is Niflheim, the land of Mist and Frost. Only Snorri Sturllsson, a Christian Monk, hundreds of years after the christianinzing of Norway, described it as a painful or bad place. All others are good or neutral in tone.
The first time I heard Heilung it was this song. I was looking for atmospheric background music for a Nordic type setting RPG. Anyway, I listened to it like 5 times in a row in, and by the end I felt like I was almost in an induced trance.
It's a perfect song, and band, for anyone running a Norse/Pagan flavoured setting. I use them for background music a lot, along with other bands like Danheim, Munknorr, Sowulo, etc. Give them a listen if you haven't already discovered them.

I use the repeating part of this song on loop as exactly that, somrthing to bring me into trance/hightened meditation. works reeeaally well
there's definitely something trance-inducing about it all. the steady moderate-tempo rhythm, the incomprehensible singing -- either really low throat-singing or very long drawn-out vocals -- it feels like you're in some sort of primitive ritual.
Their sound is organic and just slowly builds. It is trance inducing and while it is a warrior song, it actually had a very secure sound to it for me. Like I'm protected. It's hard to explain.

Something akin to this is Wardruna's "Lyfjabjerg (healing-mountain)". Eight minutes but an uplifting experience. Came out in june last year and it came to be because of the sudden stop in concerts and normal life caused by the pandemic.
"Healing-mountain stands for eternity - It comforts the sick and the sore - Each and every one who assails that rock - Will find their lifelong ailment cured."

Alfadhirhaiti is a compound word which translates as All-Father-Names
Alfadhir is literally All-Father (a common name for Odin) so the stress should be on the first syllable of the constituent words like AL-FAdhir-HAiti
It starts out with some descriptions of Odin. Dedication to the Spear and the names of his ravens Hugin and Munin (meaning Thought and Memory)
And then just a long list of alternate names for Odin:
Mighty Thuler, Wise one, Striver, Wolfspeaker, Welcomed one, Pale one, God of witches, Inciter, Cheiftain, Readhead, Hooded one, Wandwielder, Famous lord, God of the hanged, Nebulizer, Needed one, Yulefather, Evenhigh, Attacking rider, Allfather, Victory tree, Father of victory, One with a missing eye, God with painted shield, Flashing eye, Shieldshaker, Leader of the crowd, One with knowledge, Shaggy-cloack wielder, Guardian of secrecy, Terible one and Stormy one
Those were the names of the ravens Huginn(thought) and Muninn(memory), they also mentioned Sleipnir, Odins' eight legged horse and Gungnir his spear. The main chant is a list of the many names of Odin
The relentless monotone drive of this song is the opposite of breathtaking-it’s inspiring, and they still manage to shift the dynamics without lots of melody superbly, I bust out in goosebumps five or six times every time I listen to this performance.
In my more whimsical moments, I can envision these warriors getting ready to square off against something super human, like, oh, say a nest of xenomorphs from alien, going through this ritual and then just kicking ass, it’s just that energizing motivating.
In more mundane moments, I think one of the comments on the original videos sums it up nicely, “everybody gangster until the woods start chanting in old Norse.”
@Freddie Krueger apparently my play on “inspiring” as one half of respiration (the other half being “expiring”) is a tad too subtle. While the best time to be pedantic would’ve been a year ago, I suppose the second best time is now.
I adore Heilung! It really gets me in touch with my Germanic ancestry. Listening to one of their albums is almost a spiritual journey!

@@SwordQuake2 you know the Norse were basically Germanic tribes living by the coasts? There is no clear cultural distinction between the northern tribes in today's Scandinavia and the ones that lived in today's northern and western Germany. They were all Germans. Why do you think German, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian have the same stem words for basically everything? They evolved out of the same culture.

I really wish I could get to one of their rituals some day. Or even better, the experimental archaeologist/re-enactor/amateur historian in me would love to be one of those warriors.
For a quick, fun one, Elizabeth should have a look at Hakkerskaldyr from the same performance. If you're familiar with the Maori Haka, it has a very similar sound. Most definitely not the same thing as the Haka, but worth a listen to. The Warriors on stage play more of a role in it. As with everything Heilung, primal.
I think this is meant to be an invocation of Odin before a battle, so the building of it makes loads of sense.
You should research Seidr while you're at it, they utilize a lot of seidr trance methods in their music, including the animal noises.
Maybe even a berserker ritual

I was at that concert too! It was my first time to Denver, my first time to Red Rocks, and my first time seeing Heilung! I traveled by train from Buffalo and brought my bike with me. It was quite a transformational adventure. The concert was Amazing!

When I first saw this song performed live it started off with an almost completely pitch black stage with just an overhead spotlight on the main singer. I had no idea that the warriors had joined the stage until the lights came up on them when they joined the vocals. I literally gasped, it was so awesome to experience 😁
Also, that massive drum at the back of the stage is amazing! You can feel it in your bones and through the soles of your feet, it's like the earth is beating in time to the music.
This might be my favorite song of theirs. It's so, so beautiful.

That was so friiking awesome! i have an entire genre to explore and continue my playing catchup to your reactions. I am not a singer, or musically inclined in any way. I just love good music and creativity - the ART. I am going to have fun taking a deep dive into Heilung.
Still binging previous episodes to fully appreciate all the technical insights and to get exposed to more great music. Elizabeth is such an expressive and genuine lover of music! Watching her reactions alone are worth the time spent on the TCV channel. Greatly impressed by the diversity of the musical genres and performers. So good to see the appreciation of real talent across so many styles.
Had seen Heilung before and been blown away by their visceral sound. Even better now with Elizabeth's breakdown and highlights of what all is happening. Too many levels to drink in all at once. Skoal!
Please consider doing some Led Zeppelin, especially Kashmir or Achilles' Last Stand. Like Black Sabbath, Zep was one of the founders of Metal and so much more. 🤘 🤘 🤘

Is it any wonder Scandinavians are the masters of metal? This was metal before guitars were even invented. What an incredible experience.
This isn't scandinavian. Most of the members are central european (German/ polish etc.) and the music is protogermanic rather than scandinavian. Altho there are exceptions. Some scandinavian elements are certainly there.

@@TroubledTurnip yeah they take a lot of inspiration from norse runestones since centeal european barbarians weren't the best at writing shit down so there's not much to draw from.
But Heilung in general is more of an idea. Vikings weren't around until like around the 10th century. This is more oriented around the 6th Century right after or even before the fall of rome and the spread of Christianity which erased a lot of pagan culture all around europe.
So you can interpret the bands name "Heilung" (healing) as a concept to reintroduce people to europes spiritual and cultural roots which were violently removed a long time ago.
I mean, this is the kind of shit that europeans were doing all over the continent until malevolent forces erased any history of it, which is why this feels so foreign and familiar at the same time sonce culture can't be completely erased by cultural agression. Fascinating stuff really. Sry for the incoherent rant. These are some complicated issues to think about.
@@TroubledTurnip The band is doing all kinds of stuff, from protogermanic all the way up to the viking age.
Besides - scandinavians/Norse are actually germanic peoples. Treating the germanic tribes and the norse as two completely different groups of people would be wrong; that would be like separating between US americans and people from Texas (= all texans are US americans as well while not all US americans are from Texas; likewise all Norse are germanic, but not all germanic tribes are Norse).
The three founding members of the band are from Germany (Kai Uwe Faust), Denmark (Christopher Juul) and Norway (Maria Franz).
@@HH-hd7nd Thank you, it’s a pleasure to learn new things within this context. What you’ve said was my general impression but without knowing the specifics. It threw me for a loop when it was said this wasn’t Scandinavian when the song is definitely referencing the names of Oden. Even so, a band doesn’t have to be 100% Scandinavian to be performing a (semi) historical Norse invocation, and to then identify the sound as such. If I played a Shamisen you’d instantly identify it with Japan whether I was Japanese or not. This is what I meant in my initial comment.

I was at RedRocks!!! It was a most amazing life changing experience! Was my second time seeing them live and .. just hail Heilung!! They will always hold a special place in my heart and life. Love the video and your appreciation for them!
You should do a reaction for either Othan or Traust(or both). My two favourite(because I can't decide which one I like more) Heilung tracks and Maria's vocals are absolutely awesome in both(naturally).
I stumbled across the full Heilung Lifa video on CZcams about 2 years ago. Absolutely fantastic show, performance, and music. I've been a fan of theirs ever since.
If you want other similar stuff check out more of Wardruna. They have a lot of great songs, including Raido, Helvegen, Kvitravn, Grá (shorter song, but powerful and it has wolves), and Lyfjaberg (more of a healing chant but still really good). Einar Selvik is really good live, and his passion comes through in his singing.

You need to check out their new live concert from Alcatraz. Isn't mixed as well as Lifa, but it's very recent and has all of the new members and some of their newer stuff.
Holy Crap!!! That's so cool that you are going to their show! I am going too! I've had my tickets for a year! They were supposed to play Red Rock last October, but Covid happened. So I've been waiting for what seems like forever to see this performance; I have no doubt it will live up to my expectations. The tickets are a Birthday present to myself, my B-Day is the 10th of October, so I feel like that makes it even more special for me.

With this song being an invocation to Odin, I'd imagine the zombie like warriors being representative of the Einherjar. The souls of slain warriors who reside in Valhalla until it's time to march to war at the coming of Ragnarok.
