Kap G on Being Attacked Over His Race, Not Being "Mexican" Enough

  • In this clip from Kap G's December 2016 interview with VladTV, Kap G speaks about the unique position of Latino musicians in the hip-hop world. His outlook for Latino MCs and producers is positive: "I feel like this new wave of Latino rappers, we coming together...We're starting to support each other." Kap G also deals with the topics of Mexican stereotypes and police brutality in black and brown communities. "They're policing us," he says, "And all they're doing right now is killing."

why are folks knocking this dude? hes from ATLANTA for crying out loud! one of the most predominate African American communities in the USA

    • @SuperGamer87
      @SuperGamer87 Před 7 lety +14

It's not so much a knocking this dude. We black folks got a good reason to be skeptical and cautious.
It's not ignorance or knocking folks, so much as it is just worry. We've seen it so much in our history, so many of us keep guarded and stay skeptical.
Even Elvis grew up in black neighborhoods. His impact in music didn't really do black people much favors (though, Elvis wasn't racist, either--dude did Jet magazine interviews early in his career, and openly hung out with black stars backstage).
I think for many black folks, it's more of a general fear that once you let Kap in, you've open the floodgates even wider for other Mexicans in hip-hop--perhaps those even without Kap G's more authentic urban pedigree.
It's the Eminem effect. You get one raw non-black artist in the spotlight and into the fold. Pretty soon, you get floods of wannabes and concerts full of non-black folks who take it all as trend.
And the dynamics of hip-hop takes an unintended shift. It happened to jazz. It happened to rock. It happened to soul. it happening to R&B. And it's happening to hip-hop.
Given how much of hip-hop's being given away outside black culture and how much white folks own black music industry, it's not entirely a fear without merit.
FFS, there are Arab-Americans and Indian-Canadians in hip-hop now, tossing "nigga" like they know something. Stop. Only many levels, just stop, world.
Please, world, stop trying _that_ hard to be black, but still with your society hating black folks for being black. Y'all overcompensate.
And stuff like how it's harder for black women to enter black music industry, than it is for non-black people.
It's shit that like that just worries you a bit about hip-hop, if you're black. It's just not "ours," anymore.
I don't think some black folks here care whether Kap G's from black Atlanta or not.
It helps that he's not just faking his vibe, but I think other folks are just worried about the impact he's gonna have for the culture of hip-hop.
Esp. after he probably blows up in even more popularity after XXL Freshmen 2017.
Again, it's worry. Largely a due measure of it. Probably some folks overdoing it.

I'm half Mexican myself and my cousins half Mexican and black..you made a good point but dr Dre wouldn't have signed Eminem if he him self didn't think he could contribute to the culture don't mean to say this to be rude like I said I liked your point... just saddens me now its come to music all this hating on each other

Why do people get pissed at stereotypes but point the finger when someone who shares the same ethnicity doesn't fit that stereotype ? I get it all the time "you're not Puerto Rican, you don't know Spanish" "you're not black, you're hair is too curly, you speak like a white girl" "you can't be black AND Puerto Rican, you can only be one". Sooo my mom isn't black then ? My grandmother isn't black ? My aunts, my cousins, they're all not black because my dad is Puerto Rican and helped my mom conceive me ? But if I was wearing big gold hoops and twerking everywhere I'd be told I need to represent my people better. Just let people be themselves, we live in a mixed culture, things influence people in different ways, that doesn't mean they're any less of their origins than you are.

In parts you can tell the black people apart from the natives. Not saying I'm denying of being black and hating it either just pointing something out.

But then go to the Hispanic side of things and they think you’re “ a show off” because you know English or that you’re American now since you weren’t able to grow up in the same environment they did so it’s all confusing.

The reason its hard for WHITE, LATINOS, ASIANS to break into Hiphop is because Hiphop is BLACK CULTURE. Its hard for a Black artist to get into IRISH, Chinese MUSIC or MEXICAN MUSIC because that Music Industry wasnt created by black people. Its hard for a korean artist to get into the Brazilian genre of Music because it wasnt created by Koreans. Im not saying you wont have a Fan Base as a Korean Brazilian artist but its gonna be harder to break into that Industry. Theres only 3 white rappers Thats on the radio in america and thats G-Eazy, Logic, and Post Malone. I would say Mac Miller but hes not really poppin mainstream. Just like how Country Music doesnt have many Black Artist thats Mainstream

John Wilson John Wilson You got it twisted. Latinos, specifically Puerto Ricans in South Bronx helped with creating THE CULTURE of Hip-Hop. You best do more research. Best go to NY and ask Herc, Bambaata etc. My nigga even Ice-T who been rappin since the 80s said Puerto Ricans helped with the creation of Hip-Hop. Yeah Ice-T from the west but he was also in NYC. Learn yo shit. And in terms of "reggae tone", its spelled Reggaeton/Reggaetón/Reguetón. Which doesn't reflect all around Puerto Rican culture. It mostly reflects the streets in Puerto Rico. It's urban music. But what I don't get is how you think Latinos had 0 influence in the culture, not just the music, but the culture when in the South Bronx, in all the hoods if you was black, ya next door neighbor's name was Julio lol my nigga IN THIS COUNTRY we the same with the same struggles and the same history. Latinos wasn't rapping as much as the blacks when Hip-Hop was just starting out but the majority of the people DJing and B-Boying were Latinos, again, specifically Puerto Ricans. You best go to The Bronx and find out more history.

John Wilson You damn near the type to think the music is Hip-Hop when that ain't true. Remember, Hip-Hop isn't just a genre of music, it is indeed a CULTURE. And although it isn't a movement now, back in the day it was a movement for BOTH BLACKS AND LATINOS because we was in the same hoods being affected by the SAME BULLSHIT. This movement was mostly with the youth and was heavily influenced by gang culture in the Bronx. If you don't believe that last part with the gang culture influence then you MOST DEFINITELY needa learn about Afrika Bambaata since he was a Warlord in a gang in the Bronx. And he and Kool Herc both said what I just said.

Half of yo people in the comments swear Hispanic/Latino is a race. It's not. Puerto Rican, Mexican, Haitian, all those are ethnicities/ nationalities. There are black Hispanic people. Hispanics aren't a different type of people. It's all blended. You have the black Hispanics, whites, Indians. Kap shouldn't worry about what mfs gotta say about him💯

Puerto Rican we do that too Boricua’s bond is definitely real. And a dope film shouts out Big Pun with that good movie. That’s how we stay strong. Unity from within facts.

Bobby Reyes, it cannot be avoided. Racial identities are not erased just because people ignore them to "be cool" with other races.
