    I missed the clues in the songs about the true nature of their relationship but I did kind come to that conclusion at the end once I thought about it a bit. There was a point in the movie where they both realize that they can't have their relationship and their dreams they have to choose. And that happy ending wasn't that happy cause Ryan Gosling character essentially has to give up his dream for her. I took that alternate ending to be essentially what his song was about or at least what it made her think of because just like her one woman show we don't get to see or hear it we just seeing him stop playing and the audience react. If you pay attention to the movie he is essentially trying to write the song the whole time but can't finish it till the end once she leaves him. Then he makes his greatest work just like her so they both get their dreams. Who can ask for a happier ending than that?

      Yessss. Totally like the ending is very similar to that of the Umbrellas of Cherbourg. The romance does not last as careers are pursued. I also like how the song analyzes the relationship between the two of them. It is such a thoughtfully pieced together movie.

      is what the film is about
      city of stars where the stars are all ur ambitions in life. he asks who knows thers so much that i cant see?
      he is asking that will his dreams come true? the title itself says it all
      la la land is a land where everything is perfect. where all dreams are true. so that what if land is actually la la land and city of. stars means where all ambitions come true.
      but life is not la la land . this is the message. life is not city of stars

      Rebecca, you're going too fast. Mia winds up with a husband and a child that is about 3.5 years old within 5 years. So love and marriage were NOT given up by Mia. In fact, most people usually make an attempt to balance both, just as Mia has done pretty quickly after going to France.

  • @ScottKorin
    @ScottKorin Před 7 lety +399

    Yeah, this isn't a story about Seb and Mia's relationship. It's about them fulfilling their dreams. They are able to take each other's advice to help them fill that goal. Seb learns sometimes you have to sell out (like Mia does in all those auditions) to make sure you are seen by your community. Mia learns to understand your passion and to just go out their and do it, regardless of others' opinions (like Seb playing his free form jazz at the bar instead of Christmas songs). They are able to get what they want, but lose each other. Seb takes his failed relationship with Mia and uses it to inspire his music. Mia, as far as we can tell, moves on. And that's OK. Not all relationships work out.

    I don't think the ending is really a happy ending. It is more sweet-and-sour ending. Yes, it's true: they realised their dreams, but they clearly loved one another. I think that the "alternative what-if" sequence is actually them imagining "what if" and, at the end of that sequence, they look very happy together. Beside, if they were 100% fulfilled by the realisation of their dreams, they wouldn't even started to wonder "what if?"; they would have been more like "oh, look at that person I used to date years ago; he/she looks fine, good, I wish him/her all the best". Instead, they engage in this "what if" fantasy simply because they cannot help themselves imagining all the happiness they could have had together. I also think that in their "what if" fantasy there is a lot of regrets: they imagined how it would have been to fall in love at a first sight, instantly, which is typical of people who regret wasting a lot of precious time (compare with the song "What a waste of a lovely night"). I don't even think Sebastian had to give up his dream for Mia. In the "what if" scenario, he plays jazz in Paris, but then they go back to the US together. Perhaps he did manage to open his own club in LA in the alternative scenario after all. Also, the reason for why they smile at each other at the end is not because they are ohhh so happy that their dreams came true: they are evidently fighting the tears back. They look in each other eyes and they smile because, before she moved to Paris, they said that they would have always been in love with one another. I think that smile was their way to say "I love you" for the last time. Overall, I think this director tends to fetish 'sacrifice': he did it in Whipland and he did it again in La La Land. It's like: "you have to choose, you can only order one item from the menu", but it doesn't have to be like that. The funny thing is that, although I disagree with the view of the director, I ADORE his movies!

    • @vins1979
      @vins1979 Před 7 lety +31

      And ALSO I think that it is particularly telling the fact that the movie begins with people stuck in the traffic in a sunny day and ends with people stuck in the traffic in the darkness and with no cheerful music. It's like you are always stuck, in a way or in another.

    @sandythemaster6898 Před 7 lety +122

    I really think that the main theme of La La Land is not about relationship, love or dreams, it's really about CHOICES.
    Sebastian thinks about his choice (pursing his original dream) and the consequences: He could've just followed her to Paris instead, but he didn't. He got his initial dream to open his club, but for that he did sacrifice his realtionship with her.
    People with dig ambitions and dreams often end up alone, wishing they had someone by their side, while couples who made compromises on their dreams wish they didn't and regret or even resent their significant other because of it.
    For me, life is all about choices, and facing the consequences. In my opinion, what matters most should always win, and what matters most is different for every single person on earth.

      And what about people who are fully prepared to go out and achieve their dream, and also be in a healthy relationship with somebody who will help and encourage them along the way? The best example of that I can think of is Stan Lee- an incredible creative who went out and achieved his dream, and is also in a 50+ year marriage. Heck, in his autobiography, he says that "comics, movies, showbiz, maybe I did okay, maybe I didn't. But if she's still smiling at me after 50 plus years of marriage, then that's all that matters"

    • @japikolee
      @japikolee Před 7 lety +8

      Mia seems to be in a healthy relationship. She just didn't end up with the guy who was her boyfriend for half a year, despite having a great impact on her life. I feel that people that didn't like the ending are too soaked in the Disney definition of love, believing that if someone matters to you, they have to be your soulmate, and that you only love once. This movie conveys that both of those statements can be wrong.

    • @vins1979

      Maybe you don't know this from your own experience, but I for one know that sometimes you can get very nostalgic and emotional when you see someone who was once important to you. Even if you're happy with your current life. You don't have to glare at all your exes to know that you're over them. By the way, this phrase "to be over someone" sounds so teenage to me. You can care for someone deeply without wanting to be with them. You can see in the look and smile they share that they are fine with the choices they made and wish each other well.
      And I think her happiness is seen in the way she shrieks in joy when she sees her daughter, and also in the way she and her husband just easily give up their plans with friends to have dinner just with each other.

    I saw this movie in a theater with literally less than 20 people (I live in Pakistan). This was hands down the best cinematic experience of my life. I couldn't stop the tears from flowing in the end. For me, the audition song was the highlight. When Emma Stone looks in the camera and sings about her aunt "Smiling through it,
    She said she'd do it again", that was a pivotal moment of the film. No matter how much life has kicked her, she doesn't rethink her decision to follow her dreams in that particular moment. This one line speaks volumes and proves how this wasn't a love story; its a movie about dreamers and Seb and Mia were truly just a chapter in each other's dreams. Another important thing to note is that Seb too does fulfill his dream in the end. Most people think Mia was selfish (which maybe she was to an extent but thats what makes her a relatable character) for calling him a sellout but what people don't realize is that material success was never Seb's dream to begin with. This movie ends on a very happy note. They both smile at each other, their respective dreams fulfilled. And smiling, they'd do it again

They didn't end up together because it was best that way. I think it's about perspective. If your the type of person that is career driven then you are going to see their success in both of them achieving their dreams as a happy but realistic ending.
    If you are the type of person that would give up on your dreams to have the one you love then for you it's more a tragedy. Or you could be like be like me and fall somewhere in the middle because you don't really know the true value of both things to both characters.
    maybe Seb regrets letting her go over having his dream jazz club and given the choice would choose her, or maybe he wouldn't. Maybe acting and being a movie star isn't what she thought it would be and wishes she picked Seb, or maybe she loves her life and feels she made the right choice despite wishing she could have both.

    • @cthulhurealness
      @cthulhurealness Před 7 lety +5

      A very good point. Myself and my partner are also in the middle; we are both very career-focussed, but also love and support each other dearly, so while we loved 99% of the film, the ending seemed, to us at least, to be saying 'you can either have a successful life, or be in love. Now pick one'.
      However, like you said, it may all be about perspective, and for me personally, it depressed me a great deal. Maybe it would have worked for me a lot more if they would have been clearer that they weren't meant to be, like in 500 Days of Summer, but for some reason, I found their separation to be completely out of nowhere, and just slapped on the end as an afterthought.
      But, again, like you said, it does all come down to perspective, and I'm glad there's at least one other person out there who falls in the 'middle', like me :)

My problem is that I personally wanted a happy ending. I am not a romantic, I'm far from it. Rachel Wagner as a person who is currently on a musical, I can see your point about the music, but I personally love the soundtrack. The songs remind me of those old "Fred and Ginger" movies, which I really love. I can't stop singing this soundtrack. And to be clear, I was really loving the character development and chemistry between Mia and Sebastian, which is why I think the ending is such a slap in the face. I also find it hard to believe that these two characters who were LIVING with each other, didn't have enough time or money to call each other or pay for a plane ticket. It's a leap in logic that kind of ruins the ending for me (which is weird considering the opening is a musical number on a gridlocked highway). Other then those few things, I agree with you, and I would still recommend this movie to anyone that asked.

    So many theories and opinions about the end of this beautiful movie. For me, the ending was a very personal reflection of something I experienced in my own life. Sometimes you meet someone who seems to complete and compliment you so very well . . . they bring music into your life, amazing hope, the push to never stop dreaming and the drive to make every wish you ever had come true. You build your entire existence around them and let your soul get lost for a while. Then, life happens, and for whatever reason, what you thought would be "forever" ends and it almost destroys you. But, alas, someday another comes along. They may not bring the same sense of magic into your life, but you find yourself actually appreciating the difference and embracing the change. To me, the point was that while true love is always a very phenomenal thing, it CAN and does happen more than once in a lifetime. There may be more than one person out there who can make us happy and inspire us to be our best selves. In different ways? Yes. But happy none-the-less.

    I love this! You've hit on so many of the points that have been running through my mind since I saw the film, and a couple I didn't even think about in too much detail! I was actually planning on making a video about the visual communication of LA LA LAND, because the foreshadowing of the ending goes deeper than the lyrics of the songs. I won't get too into it, but whenever Mia and Sebastian are on screen together, they are always, and I mean ALWAYS at opposing angles. Even when they have their dance numbers, the camera never circles around them. The only time we see the cinematography for their dynamic change, is in the "WHAT IF" ending, beginning when Mia and Sebastian kiss and the camera FINALLY circles around them as they embrace and the music swells, and this continues into their final dance number under the star lit sky across the water in the observatory. The camera takes a less flat approach and starts to sweep and follow them as they move. I noticed this (and much more) across my two separate viewings of the film, and I feel like there's so many things I can still learn! Time to buy that third ticket!

    My problem is that the movie didn't give me enough of a reason WHY they had to choose. Five years later, they both have their dreams. Mai has a husband. She made that relationship work! Sebastian doesn't have to be at his club all the time and Mia isn't going to be shooting 12 months out of the year. And five years wouldn't have been that long to wait. Hindsight is 20/20, but they could have tried.

      I COMPLETELY agree, and I'm glad somebody else does- I was starting to think I was going insane, haha. I am all for relationships in films not working out all the way through (I mentioned 500 days of summer in a previous comment I made on this video), but for this film, I felt they had no reason to choose/break up. It seemed to be saying "you can have your dream, or a partner. Now pick one", and I think it's a bit of a shame that everybody believes this to be the only way forward. For me, if they would have ended it JUST before the "five years later", I would have been satisfied.

    Lots of great thoughts and good catches I didn't pick up on. Wouldn't change the ending, though I wouldn't necessarily call it happy. Mia seemed genuinely happy, and Sebastian forced a smile for her as an "it's okay; we made it," but you can clearly see in his eyes in that moment everything he just witnessed and felt from that montage. Yes, their chapter may be permanently closed, but I don't think it ever will be for Sebastian. Wounds that deep don't often heal completely, ever. He's still stuck in this deep pain over losing this woman he's still totally in love with, but it's too late, and there's nothing he can do. Even if he could do something, he loves her and respects her enough to stay out of it and let her-do-her. So to summarize: great ending, happy for Mia, sad for Sebastian and his life sorta sucks and may always, at least when it comes to love, loss, and regret. I think it's also obvious that although Seb's was his dream (the name of which was suggested to him by her), he'd trade it all for her in a heartbeat. His happy ending montage revealed that, but that's not what happened, and life isn't fair, and doesn't always come with second chances or do-overs.
    Sorry if I sound over-impassioned. Hands down a fantastic film. I've just heard so many differing thoughts on the ending, so I thought I'd take a minute or two and explain my understanding.

    This is so true! I totally missed the opening song foreshadowing the entire movie, and I agree with the ending of the movie. It is a modern realism, and it's not a love story. It's a story about following your dreams, and there are some people that you meet in your life that help you to become the person that are. I completely adored this movie, and the ending was the perfect end for it.

  • @rileysunderland1904

    I could not agree more. I remember when I first saw the trailer for la la land, I was just caught up in the romance aspect of it that I didn't really realize that was not what the movie was meant to be about. Then I saw it and really paid attention to the story, and realize that the movie is not meant to be about love at all. And the only way they could have possibly worked out was if one of them were willing to give up their dream for the other, which would destroy the purpose of the whole movie. It just shows that in life you have to choose and you have to let things go to get to where you want to be.
