  • in this video i explained the Role of Auxiliary Winding / VCC or Bias Winding In SMPS Switch Mode Power Supply. what is aux winding and how auxiliary winding works
    in most of the topologies, the pwm IC require a low power supply of about 10- to 45-V output. It is used to feed the usual pulse-width-modulating (PWM) chip for the main “power train / dc rail,” and power the logic and sensing circuits that perform various housekeeping
    functions. Such housekeeping functions may include over-current sensing, over-voltage sensing and protection, remote signaling, and correction of turn “on” and turn “off” sequencing for each output in a multi-output supply.
    in initial startup, when there is no power output, in that stage a startup current is provided through a startup resistor, which charges the vcc capacitor connected to the vcc pin of smps pwm controller ic, at a specific voltage threshold that ic will start switching and smps transformer will start to induce voltage in secondary. thus there is a secondary winding (named aux winding / vcc winding / bias winding) which's one end is connected to primary ground and its second end is connected to a rectifier, which will rectify that voltage will fed to the vcc pin

      yes output rectifier must be schottky, Fast rectifier, MBR type
      with low forward drop voltage

    salam,
    Mr.haseeb I watched several videos about the SMPS i found them beneficial.
    I want to ask about two recurrent matters in SMPS.
    1. when the power supply starts with a buzzing sound (i think from coils) and after 5 to 10 seconds it turns off suddenly.
    2.if all the multi voltage power supply is working normally but one voltage is missing (6v), when I applied 6v to the output dc capacitor ,it drew high current and I got a voltage drop.
    It would be great if you could benefit me , especially if you encountered such problem.

    My Vcc at the the pin 13 of the IC ML4800 is 5V while it should be 14V.
    Also the voltage between FET D-S is only 308V instead of 420V.
    Voltage over the power caps are also less than it should be 312V instead of 386V.
    I ve replaced the IC, the power caps, the switching mosfet. Still the same problem.
    Can you please help?

    Sir is that auxiliary winding is in the secondary side of the transformers? Sometimes that auxillary winding is in the primary side of the transformer it is correct sir? tnx

      in any transformer there is only one winding used as primary
      other all winding are secondary winding
      it depends on the user how he uses any circuit
      if it is used in primary side or secondary side it will remain the same
      if auxiliary winding is used with primary side or secondary side, it will remain output winding

      STPS20S120 is from ST microelectronics for 20 amp 120V with 0.7 volt fprward voltage drop
      V30120C is from vishay semiconductor having 30 Amp 120V with 0.68V forward voltage
      so V30120 is better than STPS20S120

    Sir, VCC capacitor is fluctuating. I have changed the 50v 47uF capacitor. Still fluctuating .. where to check please..

    New subscriber here. Sir I have an SMPS here with no output that I have been trying to repair for a week now. I replaced the components that i found faulty. I can now read DC voltages (around 290 to 300 VDC) at the input of the transformer but unfortunately it appears that the xformer does not magnetize. it shows zero volt at the secondary side and as well as at the aux winding. Kindly tell me of the possible points that i missed to check. thanks in advance
