After 29 years, Kings Dominion will say goodbye to the iconic stand-up roller coaster, Shockwave. The history making coaster will give its final ride to park guests on Sunday, August 9, 2015. Here's a video with complete POV and off-ride shots to remember the ride with! Enjoy!

Out of every roller coaster at Kings Dominion, the Shockwave is the only one I never rode. The thought of a stand up roller coaster always scared me in addition to the 2 incidents in 1999. While I never rode it, it's sad to see it go
All we need now is a lay-down coaster.
Well they exist. Quite a few do actually.
TheAbinator2 Superman Ultimate Flight at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois is one example. I've ridden it and it's unnerving because you are hanging there and it feels like you are going to fall out at any moment.

It's always sad when a coaster closes and I will miss Shockwave (only a little though) but who ever thought that a stand-up coaster was a good idea? I mean really, who WANTS to stand on a coaster? If there's any airtime your shoulders get crushed then you come down and you have that bike seat like thing in between your legs so if your a guy your nuts get crushed. I'm sure whatever King's Dominion has in store for that area is way better than what's in it's place now.

Loved this ride as a kid in the late 80's and early 90's. Not so much as I got taller and bigger in the 2000's. Hope something really fun comes in its place!

OnlyBendy This is something that is required in Japan for most coasters. I think because it was a Japanese roller coaster supplier, it might have just come standard since they are used to building them like that. That's just my guess.
Tbh idk but in China they have it cause they have a lot of earth quakes so that they can get off the ride easy but idk if this is the case or not

christopher martinez You might be right, but I think the main reason is to ease inspections, because of earthquakes like you said it. Inspections are the same reason all wooden roller coaster have cat walks.
Unless the track got damaged dramatically, a roller coaster car would only stop at the lift, station or at block breaks. These parts usually have bigger catwalks, or catwalks at all.

I got to go on its final ride not even knowing it was the last time it was running until after we were done and let me tell you it hurt, my shoulders and my groin were destroyed definitely a painful nut buster

I remember when this ride first opened at Six Flags Magic Mountain. It was painted black. They dismantled the ride and moved it to Kings Dominion. It was a fine ride and to tell you the truth, it was my first LOOP roller coaster, so this ride has a lot of memories. Too bad it is going away. I hope they are bringing in something better.
I know this is 7 years old, but this was never at magic mountain. That was an Intamin standup, this was togo
I remember when I took a trip to Paramount Kingston minyan in my freshman year of high school. My best friend got on the shockwave and she came off of it in tears.

Actually that's not correct. King Cobra & Skyriders were identical. Shockwave had a different ending.

So, the last remaining TOGO stand-up in North America is going down. While I won't try to argue that it was a GREAT ride (it was rough and uncomfortable), it's still kind of sad to see it go.
There's a ride called also called shock wave which is also a stand up coaster at Drayton manor

***** The two coasters share the same name and they are both stand-ups, but the rides are completely different layout and manufacturer.
Almost identical to the former King Cobra coaster at Kings Island. King Cobra's track went under the lift hill then, the break run near the loop and first air time hill.
My church went here in the 80s. I remember the older kids got stuck upside down in a thunderstorm😯

the only stand up roller coaster I have been on was green lantern at six flags great adventure and it was awesome!
Sadly, that and riddlers revenge are the only good ones.

When I first when I was little, I thought it was mande by arrow huss because of its trains
There's one moment where you can see the lateral G's as the rider's heads snap to the side. Aside from that, I find stand up coasters to be the most comfortable because I'm tall (6'3") and sometimes I just don't fit into sit down coasters.

Yo, Theme Park Review! I think an awesome video would be if you showed off the Oculus Rift capabilities in No Limits 2. I've seen some videos of it on youtube, but I think you guys could really do it justice. Maybe do some insane coasters that could only be created with someone's crazy mind and a coaster simulator. =P
The second half of the ride is like the mirror image of how King Cobra was at Kings Island.
This ride is fun... But my side hurt so bad once it ended. It is not bad though. On the 4th of july we went to KD. My friends told me they hated the Shock Wave and it was uncomfortable. So I was planning I not riding it. Then later that day when we went home my mom wanted me to ride it with her before it closes. I was like ugh. Then yesterday my friend, mom, and I went to KD. My mom and I rode the Shock Wave while my friend waited...She does not like upside down rides... She rode the Dominator and was fine, she does not have a reason to hate upside down rides but she will not ride them... But it sucks that they are closing the Shock Wave :( I liked it

Honestly something like this coaster could have just benefited from sit-down trains, maybe with lap restraints since it's only good a vertical loop.
I've been on it like three times at it is amazing its not as scary unless its your first time
we have a shock wave in sox flags over texas but we sit down and there are 2 loops, and they put a mask on you and the mask is a video game, basically you play a video game on the ride

Redwire Sound No, SkyRider was removed last year at the end of the 2014 season after operating for 29 years. It now operates as Freestyle at Cavallino Matto in Italy. :-)
MKX Combos Yes, Georgia Scorcher was the last B&M Stand-up coaster to be built as it opened in 1999. It appears that Cedar Fair has plans to convert the rest of their B&M stand-up coasters to floor-less and get rid of their last TOGO stand-up coaster, Shockwave. It seems that Six Flags is the only one keeping their B&M Stand-up and their one Intamin Stand-up coasters alive.

No, only King Cobra (KI) and Skyrider (CW) were identical. Shockwave was a variant.

I can't help but feel a hint of jealousy that other parks would give "last rides" for rides slated for removal or massive renovation.
