BAND-MAID fans don't miss Saiki when it comes to their instrumentals. We actually look forward to a new instrumental with each new album, and they absolutely use the instrumentals (and Miku led songs) to give Saiki a break during live shows. They did that during their US tour last year. We also love when they delve into the metal side of things. The one thing we do wish is that Kanami would let loose like this more often. We can agree with you on that one for sure. It's just not really her style to make a song all about her. We are thankful that she made an exception here. This is the highest score you've given BAND-MAID if I'm not mistaken. 😁

  • @realdocloco
    @realdocloco Před rokem +55

Misa deliberately kept it simple and melodic - she actually composed her bass solo on keyboard before playing it on bass. It provides an amazing contrast with Kanami's fretwork.

  • @shabbo84

I've done this comment somewhere before.. but I always imagine From Now On as a hero's journey.
Kanami's guitar showcases ups and downs: in "verses" it's struggle, in "chorus" it's uplifting, in solo it's the culmination. Misa's bass in "breakdown" always reminds me of "calm before the storm", preparations before final "battle", advice of "wise character" to our "hero".
Ending of the song is like, reliving all the struggles hero passed to get there where he is now, at the dawn of victory at the greatest challenge and it ends on a high note...
.. Is it a cliffhanger or is it a victory? I friggin love this song I imagine that somebody will pick it up for a movie at some point.
    PS
I don't believe many fans "miss" Saiki, we all know that their liveshows are 2+ hours and bad ass instrumentals like this + Miku featured songs are like blessing for Saiki to rest her voice in the middle of concert. We are used to it, we expect it and we want it. :)
    Cheers.

I think the only thing Band-Maid is versus is themselves in the past. They are always striving to improve themselves, so the only thing they are in competition with is themselves.
And MISA said that during the writing of this EP, she used her computer instead of her normal of just knocking back a drink or two and picking up her bass. She said that she was intentionally working so she wouldn't fall into a rut or copy others.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 You finally took up this song I love. I witnessed it performed live twice with this MV quality in Tokyo and dropped my jaw twice 😲. I believe so did many of American audience at 12 venues during their 2022 US tour. This song has been normally played in the middle of the setlist to give Saiki some break as you said. They played this song, however, as opening at three festivals (including Aftershock, Sacramento) and in Guns N' Roses concert in Japan as support to the legendary band. Yeah! they showed off their skills and talents to the audience who knew nothing about the girls in maid outfit on the stage. I felt as if I heard them screaming "Hey guys! Listen to us and open your eyes wide! We are not the persons that you think ! Salute us!".

It certainly gives her a chance to rest her voice during concerts. And the second benefit is that it lets us get to hear what the rest of the band is capable of.

Obi-Wan Kanami's compositional skills are up there with the very best (I prefer her scores for 5 band members better than most Mozart's compositions for quintets!). The band opened with this a few times on their recent USA tour and there are a couple of very good fancam close-ups of Kanami getting into her zone and pushing her limits playing this (her emotion shows across her face and she got weak with anaemia at the end of the tour with her non-stop dedication. I wouldn't worry about Saiki not being here as they have several instrumental songs, at least one of which they play at every gig - we call it "Saiki's pee break"! I used to say that Band-Maid were a Rock band but, over the years, I've seen them utilise many genres in their music - Rock, Metal, Jazz, Blues, Funk, Rap and others - so now I just call their genre "Band-Maid Style"! Great reaction, analysis and score - as usual.

When they did this during the 2022 US tour, Kanami would walk over to her amp while Misa was doing her bass solo and grab a long pull on her water bottle. She would return back up front about when Miku strummed the transition between bass lead to drum lead. They performed this perfectly every time. Did Kanami write herself a break?
When I first saw this video several months ago, I was awestruck. I had to remind myself to breathe and to was wiping tears of joy from my eyes. I don't care whether Kanami is considered as a technically skilled guitarist or no, but I do know that she is a gifted composer. I never hesitate to give them a '10' rating. I know they'll go to '11' the next time!

Saiki wanted an instrumental to open their recent ep, and this little masterpiece was born (well, chosen). And yes, the band paired this song (plus Onset at a couple shows) with a Miku lead song to allow Saiki a break mid-show during their US tour last fall. Suspect they'll use similar arrangements in the future.

Agree! Tone is without a doubt metal.
But the girls core is hard-rock, inspired by pop, metal, prog... yes, even Jazz in some songs.
About instrumentals... Yes they became an essential part of Saikis "pee-break".
Not sure what came first: the breaks or Saikis throat issues.
Quite sure the instrumentals were ideas Kanami had discarded, because she struggled to find the vocal melody. "Play" was the first, but was soon upgraded, when Saiki liked it so much and wondered if Miku could make lyrics to it. I kind of can see her sitting backstage humming for her self.
To replace it came "onset", which by many still consider their best. Gives me Rush "YYZ" vibes somehow? My favourite is "Without holding back", which for sure is metal, but got an irresistible drive. Some nice superlight progressive doublekicks, great guitarwork. Love the use of the egyptian (?) scale.
They weren't primarly written for the breaks, but also to give Miku some run for the money and enhance her skills. Like she didn't have the chance of hiding behind her vocals.

I kinda agree that it might sound better with a warmer tone, but then again, I can't imagine hearing it any differently. Miku's tone is always perfectly chunky. Yes, I know Kanami records Miku's parts in the studio, but I'm pretty sure she uses Miku's rig to do so.

Great reaction David. What you said about Lovebites is true, well said. The 'my taste in music/bands is better than yours' is so juvenile. Both bands are awesome at what they do.

    Now, I'm curious.
What exactly defines a song as Hard Rock, as opposed to say, Metal or just plain good ol' Rock?
I always had the impression that AC/DC was Hard Rock, but their music seems way more "slow paced" than Band Maid's.
    Could anyone please explain?
    Thanks!

There is an instrumental version of their previous album, Unseen World, that comes with the purchase of their song book. It becomes apparent when you listen to the songs with out the vocals that Unseen World is a progressive metal album. The vocal melodies overlaid on top soften it up and cover some of the details. It’s Band Maid doing Band Maid things, and it’s always great.

I was hoping that you would react to this; I thought you would be impressed. There are several songs on the "Unleash" CD that are a little "darker" than what you are used to from them. Also, check out "I Still Seek Revenge" on the "Unseen World" CD - nice Mist work there. Thanks again for the reaction David; it's always great to hear your thoughts!

From what i understand, kanami, also miyako construct songs, guitar even vocal( like everything) started with a piano. I bet other bands do so in japan, tamu murata the Nemo phila drummer also does this. I'm not a musician though, is it a common thing? Would like ur thoughts on that though. Good for knowledge

@@THEDavidHeretic maybe there's an advantage using piano( given that you really master the piano) over doing song for example using a guitar?

At the Washington DC show they played one of their other instrumentals, "From Now On" followed by this song. They also did a Miku song. So, Saiki got a good 15 minute rest. And we were completely satisfied. Also, the fans do want Kanami to have more 'shred time'.

Why should we miss Saiki in an instrumental ? It's to me their second best (first being Without Holding Back). Thx for your reaction.

Would have this been better with vocals? Maybe but they aren't there and they won't be so it is what it is. Is this an amazing song? Yes it is and the reason is because they do something like this, and then they do something like that. Context matters if you're invested in this band at all but stand alone it's still great. I love that Kanami really gets to shine she's usually creating atmosphere and focusing on song writing but every once in a while she gets to pop off and this is a great example.

What I think is great is in interviews Saiki asked Kanami to write a bad ass instrumental that could be used as an opener at times and this was the result.

B-M came out swinging on this one. And being that it's the first track on the Unleash!!!!! EP, it says something. Kanami means business. It's like all of a sudden she woke up and said "F* it, it's time." And Saiki said "Do it, I just wanna sit back and watch what happens". This is a Kanami masterpiece, a Mincho masterpiece. I was so happy when this came out. To see her finally take a whole song to flex to the entire world. Sometimes she just has to let Mincho loose, and drop the mic every now and then. ぽ

Good review. This was Kanamis showcase. OK - all other played super well - but it was 2000% Kanami. Just as Mr Heretic, before this video I did not know how good she was. Now I know. Different bands do different. In Lovebites the two guitarists showcase (almost) every song. In BAND-MAID showcasing is not a thing, except sometimes. The song is more important. The group and the audience is more important. Different groups, different ways to be a spectacular band. And the analysis of MISAS solo was just right. It was tasteful, it actually was VERY tasteful, I really loved it. But it was not spectacular.

All of Bandmaid's instrumentals are awesome, it isnt just Kanami playing she writes the music showing that skill as well. Bandmaid does 3 things to give Saiki a break in their long concerts, An instrumental, Miku Magic time(or some sort of Miku audience interaction and one song where Miku is the lead singer. Another great one is Without Holding Back, but for some extra on that one. Herman Li invited Kanami and Miku on his twitch to "audition" for bandmaid and the 3 of them played Without Holding Back, Herman was in fact dressed as a Maid and added his Dragonforce flare to the song as they played it. It is a great video. Of course the real MV is just as good as this From now On. Another good one is Onset Live. I agree this was Metal, Bandmaid is mostly hardrock of course but they do occasionally tap into Metal or the other way into groove and rock.

I love Saiki, I value and respect Miku (I would be in mourning for a decade if either had their role or style in the group changed [that's not exaggeration to make a point]), but...take any of the band's heavier songs, remove all vocals, and then see if your impression of the song has changed. It's nice to see what the instrumentalists do when the harnesses are (at least partially) slashed.

Kanami, showing why she is my and thousands of others future wife 🤣Akane playing more fills than Keith Moon.
I am totally with you when people compare bands or assign them a specific genre. It boils down to my brother is bigger than yours and belongs in the playground.
