it could easily turn into a very cruel prank if you keep it going long enough: a close friend starts being distant, cold towards you, acting as if they don't even know you, maybe you did something wrong to upset them... in a dating/marriage relationship it's very close to couple breakup pranks
It's not like that...
This was a problem for me because when I learned Japanese in school, we generally only learned "polite" forms. Eventually some Japanese friends told me to stop using the "polite" form because it felt like I wasn't trying to be friendly. That was when I learned that the "polite" form is not actually the most "polite" depending on the context!
Technically, we shouldn't be using "you" in English with our family and friends. "You" is meant to be exclusively second-person plural, but through that, in English, it is also second-person polite. As for second-person informal, we should be using "thou" and adding "-st" to the verb forms - much in the same vein as is done in German. But that's a story someone else has probably done a video on 😅 But pretty much every other language in the world defines a formal and an informal register clearly. It could be the grammatical person (as with the Indo-European languages), or it could be particular verb structures (as with Japanese and Korean). It is quite the rabbit hole one can dive into.
In lang school, i usually use casual form with friends and teinei with teachers

@@KaleunMaender77The people define and mold the language, not the other way around, it changes with time and adapts to the people. Just because the roots of a language has different structures and rules doesn't mean we are "technically supposed" to be using archaic modes that are obsolete. Or that we "shouldn't use" incredibly common and natural words such as "you". According to who? Why shouldn't we? That doesn't make any sense. If what came before is always considered the "way it should be" every English speaker would have to go back to an English that was so archaic and so germanic that it is pretty much a different language and studied as such. You wouldn't be able to understand any of it, much less read it. And me, along with every other romance language should have to revert to latin.
I really like the way you speak Japanese for the audience, not really starving us on vocabulary, but at a pace slow/fast enough for me to understand without feeling like a noob.

Oh god I can imagine how awkward it is to do that 🥲 My language has a similar concept. At a former job, my boss at some point wanted us to use casual speech with her (she was the type to want to be "cool" with the young people) but it felt so wrong because of course, to me she was a person of authority who I couldn't just talk casually to. So by the next day, I just automatically reverted back to using our version of keigo, and she was incredibly offended that I went back to polite speech even after she had already offered me to use casual speech. I get why, it felt like I was rejecting her, I guess...but I just couldn't overlook our relationship and act so friendly with a superior.
Would totally get that.
this concept is odd to me because in my country i talk to my friends like i talk to my boss. even with swearing and all but that is just like normal here
Wow I would've hate that. You can't just force people to address to you informally, it must be natural. And being offended by them not doing so is so immature! I perfectly get what type of a person is your boss and they are, ugh, so cringy sometimes.
Wow, these cultural aspects are totally new to me. My first language has more formal and less formal forms than English but people have no problem switching them around.
We have certain barriers between written language and spoken language but rarely people would complain about someone being more polite than the current situation requires.
But people will feel weird if some native speakers started speaking like reading a letter or book or giving a speech.
Human languages are fantastic because they are linked to our emotions.
Pls guys, what you're saying is so interesting that you can't just be mysterious about "your language" and "your country", you gotta name them
keigo is the achilles heel for any student of japanese who learned the bulk of the language from anime.

I clicked on this video because I was interested in the friend's reaction, but I think I finally understood how different keigo and tameguchi are. I've been taking Japanese classes since spring 2022 and it feels so far from reality when the teacher tells us about it. Hearing it like this (and also the friend answering in "normal" speech) made me feel like I finally understood it.
Also made me appreciate how odd one of my fave anime characters must sound to his friends as he always uses keigo. Very interesting

Right?! I am learning so much just listening to him and reading the Japanese subs, and I thought my Japanese was so bad I was never going to be able to make sentences.
I came down into the comments to say just this. I am SHOCKED by how much I understand this guy, just him talking. I practice listening with アニメ all of the time, and it's a real struggle. I've talked with Japanese people in the streets of 東京, and it's a real struggle. But this young man, I feel like he has presented every word, distinctly, on a silver platter, and with a bow, so that I can understand what he is saying. Absolutely strange and amazing. "How does he DO that?!"

I would honestly love to see more videos about keigo since it's very difficult but important in Japanese society!
Personally I'd rather see more videos about casual speech because it's often not mentioned in a lot of textbooks or other resources, which bothers me because as a foreigner/learner, it's a lot more useful than keigo. Nearly every Japanese person I met quickly switched to casual speech. Some taught me a lot of slang words you would NEVER see in a textbook, but if you listen to conversations between close friends, you'll hear them. Plus they don't expect you to know keigo if you're learning. For keigo most learners can get by with desu/masu endings and o/go prefixes on certain words.
When I went to japan, I couldnt understand 店員 because they speak super keigo and I havent studied keigo that much. Whenever they realize I couldnt understand, they just repeated the same thing, only one of them switched to casual form. Maybe its so natural for them to speak keigo with clients that they dont even think about saying it in easier words.
Not so much that it's "natural" for them so much as it's a BIG no no to speak anything less than that to a customer normally. So you're not exactly going to have a service worker attempt anything less most of the time, especially if boss man is around. They'll usually sooner start using gestures than speak more casually
It’s funny how it is always left out of intro Japanese courses but you’ll need to understand it to do anything at all in Japan.
I love how the japanese feel that the intense subtleties of language are somehow unique to them.

Love your videos, glad to see you again! I’ve been taking Japanese studying seriously and made some friends online to help me. The biggest challenge is learning how to express myself in Japanese. Or trying to figure out what a friend is meaning to say. The nuance is difficult to grasp.
Especially in Japanese culture where "reading the air" is part of a social skill that gets taught from a young age. So many things are left unsaid and you are expected to grasp them by reading between the lines. It's giving me social anxiety haha.

I have the reverse problem: when first learning Japanese, I *only* knew keigo and very little tameguchi. I wanted very much to be less formal with my friends but it was a little difficult. I still have a lot to learn!

I totally relate to this! It is indeed so difficult to switch to informal so suddenly. It feels like you don't know what your position is and how to act. At least that's how I feel when somebody older than me asks me to stop being so formal. It takes a while to get used to it. I wonder why we react like that. 🤔

I can't speak Japanese but I found this interesting and I like being able to somehow make comparisons with my language. In Italian too the polite form is usually used with people we don't know, so it's both to show respect (especially towards elders) and because the person is not close with the other. While we use the informal form with friends. Every situation is different though, depending on the person. For example some people tend to talk informally no matter the situation and the person they refer to. Some people don't like this, while some others are okay with it, so it's not really a "strict rule".
And when we talk to younger people we tend to always talk informally, even if we're not close
Interesting. In Germany, even if someone is thrice my age, if they talk to me informally, I'm replying in the same manner. Same goes the other way around. (Of course it's different when there's some hierarchy going on, like teachers with students for example. The example I gave applies to random people on the street tho)

I have a japanese friends and her family was so close with me. I remember her father said family doesn't use keigo. It's being weird if use keigo in family. And my friend's father said I also no need to use keigo to them because we are like family. But I still use keigo sometimes to respect them 😅 just like when i say thank you, i say "arigatou gozaimasu" then they'll start to laugh 😅

I guess if two people have been apart for a while or if for some other reason the relationship between two people could change. For example if one person become the others boss or supervisor then there maybe changes. I know that this can be strange in a Martial arts setting where you may have a senior student or even a Sensei who Younger by Age than a student, or a younger Student inheriting a position through the Iemoto tradition.

This also happens in brazilian portuguese too, but not as intensive and distinguishable as in japanese. I had this experience with a friend of mine a couple of years ago. We were really close (we even lived in the same rented house due to our level of friendship), but after each one trailed their own lives, years passed, and no with no communication in between. When we finally met we spoke in a more formal way and with "caution". I dont know if this is common practice after so long without any connection, but it was at least interesting to see it happening.

I like watching a Japanese online weather program (Weather News), and two of their casters are very good friends outside the program, but when they interact in front of camera, they only use keigo. It's a very peculiar (and dare I say, almost contradictory) situation that i think doesn't happen in many languages!

This was fun and easy to follow. I'd like to highlight that the same phenomena happen in every language. The rules may be more intuitive and less formalized (eg in English), but they certainly exist, and this kind of experiment would be possible all over the world. Every human society consists of networks of relations of varying degrees of intimacy, and these relations are created, managed and developed through language.
