One time in band I started figuring out how to play the Mii Channel theme on my trumpet, and once other classmates noticed and joined in it eventually spiraled into the band director making it a song we would play at one of our concerts. Good times.

Literally teaching my students how to Google for sheet music is how I kept them excited about practicing, and frankly, having to figure some things out like transposing and difficult rhythms and looking up musical notations or asking about them made them WAY better musicians than if I assigned them random stuff they didn't care about.

I'm greatful of your mom for letting you experience so many things like playing so many instruments, sports, art, etc. As a teen who never got too much to experience like playing so many instruments. Early age is the best time to experience everything they want to and find there passion.
I play the recorder and let me tell you, it is one of the easiest instruments to learn. You literally just blow into it softly and cover holes to make sounds.
Yeah but also, the recorder is one of the most obnoxious instruments ever created, and unless you can find the EXACT pitch at which to play, it just sounds horrible.

The flute bit stuck with me so deeply that when I picked up band in middle school I ended up playing the flute, and I played the flute for 3 years, purely because of this bit.
My school also forced me to play recorder. The thing is I got to the point where the Star Spangled Banner was boring and moderately difficult to play because the music teacher was good at teaching. And I wasn’t the only person that no problem with it either. Then it set me up for a life with the ol’ Alto Saxophone.

Jaiden’s flute experience when picking instruments is similar to mine back in sixth grade. I was asked to play a f cord without literally any knowledge or experience.
I then played the flute for grades 7 and 8 but my breathing was so bad I could barely hold a note and I’m still surprised 5/6ish years later (last year of high school) that I passed that part of music class. Cuz I sucked butt.

Dude i played the piano for 8 years too (stopped taking lessons about a year ago) and had the exact same routine of learn song, play song, learn new song, forget old song. Currently I just play songs I like from games or anime but I use synthesia instead of sheet music, it works better for me.
The whole "video game music" thing was how i kept up my skill with the trumpet during COVID. Also, i totally agree with the thing about pianists just playing classical. I played all sorts of stuff on the piano, and there's nothing wrong with that. That's like saying saxophone players can only play jazz music because saxophones are common jazz instruments. Any instrument can play anything, so long as the player knows how to play it well.

Your reaction to the flute was also my reaction when I started playing the chromatic harmonica. I'm not that good yet; the first practice sessions I need to dedicate to practicing breath control. I'm confident that it'll come naturally once I get used to it (I even plan to use it for song covers)

I have violin lessons and we always have to stop right in the middle of a song because a few rooms down was this thing called "funK skool". It's basically where there's electric guitars and drums and trumpets interrupt the two other clubs happening at the exact same time. One of these clubs happen to be mine. So, I'm with ya, Jaiden. I had people blasting it on electric guitars while the two string orchestras are struggling to actually hear what they're playing.

4:16 this reminds me of when everyone was obsessed with getting the red ukulele instead of the green ones in my primary school
I remember in my 4th and 5th-grade years, we had this thing in my music class called "Recorder Karate". I don't know how common it is, but it's basically playing different songs on the recorder and winning a belt every time you mastered a song. The belts were noting more than colored string we put at the ends of our recorders or case zippers, but I had fun with it.

I’ve been playing the trumpet for about 3-4 years now and I absolutely ADORE band and music! It’s completely changed my goal trajectory for life (I now want to major in music in the future). Unfortunately, there happens to be a myth about Apollo and a flute. Basicly Athena made the flute, but was made fun of, so she put a curse on the flute and threw it onto Earth. This is where some poor dude picks up the flute and begins to play it. The flute has goddess breath in it, so it sounded pretty good. Then Apollo was like, "You think that flute playing is good?" So they had a contest, and were evenly skilled. Apollo, who chose a lyre, decided to turn it into a play-while-singing contest. Obviously the flute-player lost and was therefore died. THE END.

You trying to get the “special” case with the black interior instead of blue reminded me of how my elementary school had made us all do ukulele at one point (don’t remember what grade, just that it was one of the earlier ones), and I would try to get one of the “special” ukuleles! It was purple like a third of the others, but it had black in one part instead of tan. For the performance for our parents I was stoked that I managed to get the “special” one haha
Amazing how everything changes in 5 years, I don't think anyone would say you're not an actual piano player unless you play Beethoven and all that... And literally my motivation for learning the piano is being able to learn videogame music haha

That "studying for test just to forget it immediately afterwards" hits close to home.
We were 32 in our class and had a new maths teacher because our previous one got new classes to teach so she could no longer keep up with us as well. So anyway, up until the new teacher came, we were at worst passing with 4s. Now that we had a new teacher, 28 of us failed the grade. The next year we got another new teacher. :)

I have the same piano experience but with the violin. I took lessons with a family owned place but they got bought by another place that just had me play song after song for like 3 years and I got bored.

I actually never learned any classics on the piano, my teacher encouraged learning songs I wanted to play, so I know a lot of Luigi’s Mansion
I choose the flute too it’s a nice and cute sounding instrument although you are right, it was quite hard to get a sound out of it but after tons and tons of practice, I got it down
