For those lamenting why, after this scene, Victor didn't choose Emily, it's the same reason the dead reacted with such concern when Victoria is later taken hostage and almost killed: Life is to be lived, because it is so short, and a waste of it is a tragedy. Victor had feelings for Victoria AND Emily, but at the end of the day Emily asking on his love to end his life wasn't the right thing to do, no matter how heart-breaking - she herself had her life ended by another who took advantage of their love. In a way, the film is Emily finally grieving for the life she left behind, but understanding that she cannot then proceed to inflict that pain on more people (no matter how innocent the motive). Victor has a life to live to the fullest, and loved ones he'd leave behind - she can't ask such a sacrifice of him. The film shows maturity in that you don't always get your way or what you want just because you really want it or you love it. Sometimes it's not your place to have it.
Amen to that. Also, what a lot of people seem to forget: Victor had no choice in either case. It was an arranged marriage to Victoria, and an accidental one to Emily. Victor is essentially caught between two very big responsibilities. He is making a sacrifice regardless of whom he chooses. Victor is basically doing what he does because... for all his faults, he is still a good man. He doesn't turn away an innocent dead girl in the end, he doesn't want the girl his parents picked for him to be miserable and alone.
Yeah like that's one of the main reason she says I got my dreams of marriage taken away from me and my life and I can't take it away from her no as well Cuz the whole time all Victoria wanted was to marry someone she truly loved So when they were getting married and she saw that she was taking her dreams away when she was already dead she didn't want to Fulfill her selfish needs And plus then she confronted her murderer and Got over her longing for love she was able to pass on does someone actually made a theory that that wasn't the underworld that that was actually purgatory And at the end of the movie she went to heaven and that actully makes a lot of sense right
@@silenceofsolis5032 LIKE- HAS NO ONE MADE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN ONE, THEY LOOK SO SIMILAR AND TWO- victor and victoria- THAT SOUNDS LIKE NAMES YOU GIVE TWINS:!) *:)

I can't help but think that Emily is the most beautiful character in the entire movie. Yes she is dead, yes her eye pops out from time to time, and yes she has a maggot in her head but she is really pretty. The way she has a light for everything is just enchanting and it was horrible what Lord Douchebag did to her.
***** Yeah, I saw a pic on Tumblr that had Prince Hans and Prince Charming from the Shrek movies as a couple. I thought "Why not Bark-ass?" It'd be like an evil (BR)OT3.
This is the best scene in film history in my opinion. Here we see Emily, who was thrown into the land of the dead in the worst way, betrayal, completely giving up on what she so enthusiastically and hoped was a second chance at true love. You can tell this by her effortless playing, a single, dead (literally) hand. But Victor then enters with his apology, to which she ignores as none but a ploy to get forgiveness from her. Hence she carries on playing. In his attempts, victor mimics her minor tones with his majors, representing not only his life but his honest hope to see her not give up. But then she stops, even those low notes, gone, as if to end the music there. For good. But Victor doesn’t have it. Won’t accept it. So he comes bringing an upbeat passage of the music in the hopes she will rejoin. And she does, at first sounding aggressive and full of resentment to his attempts, perhaps because she does not nor cannot trust them. But eventually she sees his efforts as genuine and they meet in true duality. And she finally sees this as hope of true love, even within death itself, her chance at something that would have made everything, all the shit, just meaningful. And she takes it. She enters his major notes, the notes of the living if you will. And her hand runs across his arm. This is the best scene in tv history because it tells the entire story with all its dark romance with only just a few words. Her acceptance of him in the end seems almost desperate when she enters the major notes and doesn’t fight in the music for long, as she does truly want love with him. So she ends with three words: “Pardon my enthusiasm” Words no less honest, To which he admits his appreciation for it. Edit: Victoria aint shit #teamemily
Omg and just as she starts to enter the major her hand breaks off, symbolizing her getting carried away only for us to be faced with the bitter truth. That despite their chemistry, Emily is dead and Victor is not.
I think even if we had more scenes with victor and Victoria their chemistry wouldn't even be close to what we saw. They're personalities between victor and Emily were just perfect for each other. Victoria's was just a little boring and no enthusiasm or nothing.
I blame poor writing and lack of screentime, honestly. It's hard for an audience to pass fair judgement when we're not allowed to take the time to know her.
One thing I can really say that I love about this movie, is the fact that they actually show the characters playing the piano. And I must admit, it's actually pretty accurate compared to if you were playing the piece in live-action. Usually, live action films will just have the camera behind the piano so the actors don't have to show actual playing. This is even found in other animation. But Burton said "Fuck that! I'm actually going to have this animated" STOP MOTION might I add. One of if not the hardest means of animation. This is one of the many reasons why i love this movie!
i actually learned to play this song by pausing this scene till i had the notes, ad filed in the blanks best i could. later when i got the actual score i was blown away how close it was. Burton is crazy
Plus It's being stop motion to begin with could also add because if you're going to go through the process of moving all of those frames to make them play piano I guess they would want to make it accurate XD but like it was totally worth it
"You lied to me! Just to get back to that other woman. Don't you understand? You're the other woman. No! You're married to me. She's the other woman. And I thought... I thought this was all going so well. Look, I'm sorry, but... ...this just can't work. Why not? It's my eye, isn't it? No. Your eye is... ...lovely. Listen, under different circumstances, well, who knows? But we're just too different. I mean, you're dead. You should've thought about that before you asked me to marry you. Why can't you understand? It was a mistake. I would never marry you". These lines break my heart.
Honestly, I just don't like Victor, I couldn't relate to him at all. I'd do so many things differently :o And Emily seems much better and alive than Victoria and even has shown more affection towards him.... I'm still sad, he didn't go with Emily as soon as he could.... :'(
I remember when I was little I would be so angry that they didn’t end up together. Now that I’m older, I love the ending of this movie and I wouldn’t change it. Since they didn’t end up together, I used to think that Victor didn’t love her, but they do love each other. This is the definition of “right person, wrong time.” I adore this movie.
+linkLoverAG Not everything can be explained and if you look for a single reason for everything that happens during a movie than explain me why there is a piano in every war movie in the middle of a square? Saving Private Ryan - Band of Brothers - ....
I kind of like how it's a sort of apology. She starts lamenting. He gently enters the conversation. He grows more passionate,"Please forgive me!" in a little voice, but then she re-enters angry and explains her frustration. They exchange at the same pace, and then reconnect through a small embrace that leads off to a gentle end to the argument. I like how I can kinda put words to the notes.
+Kokoro Cala My violin teacher always told me that a piece of music is just like a story, it has phrases and comma's, one thing leads to another, you end a sentence and start a sentence. Now it's second nature to think of music that way, but when I first heard it I had never thought of it like that and it's pretty cool :P
Victor and Emily belonged together and near the end, he actually was falling in love in her, but they were star-crossed from the start. Movies like this are amazing and well-written.
I don't think he genuinely loved her, I think it was more of a "no better option" kind of thing. Yes, he was completely on board with marrying her, but that was moreso out of sympathy and the fact that Victoria, the woman he DID love, or at least had genuine affection for, was to marry another.
This is how cruel the real life sometime can be. Emily seemed to has everything. She's beautiful, talented, her mind and soul are pure and precious. But At the same time she has Nothing at all, she lost her love, her life. Desire something so bad but only can watch other person has it except herself. The most cruel part is that she is good person, she Deserves to be love, to be living happily. At the end she found peace by letting it goes. When I watch that scene It broke my heart but I smile and cry at the same time, because maybe it is solution for the problem that has been messing with my head through my entire life
I love how this scene shows how great communication is music. The hole dialogue between Victor and Emily is so clear and understandable. Like when Victor tries to apologise her but she is very angry and he tries again and she wants to say something but she gives up and Victor tries even harder and then she just pour out all her anger and pain and then they start to communicate. They get along and they begin to understand each other. At the end everything is done. They are reconsiled. Everything is okay.
Honestly if I can play music with another person I tend to be able to just connect with the person easily. Like another language we both speak and its just great. With some people that I can't play with we naturally just don't really talk to each other at all
Music is........ a better way of comminucation. Words never hold that much power to exhibit emotions and what lies deep within us. Its more than a tool to just make other people happy or sad. Its not industry. Its the words in our minds.
Your Majesty what is your problem? Two thousand+ people ignored that spelling mistake which btw was written THREE YEARS AGO... but you couldn’t help yourself huh?
This song from the corpse bride will never get old it’s such a beautiful piece of 2 people telling each other how they feel through music and it’s just well the hole song is beautiful and so is the movie
Alejandra Mojica Oh my god. Same. Love this movie, I also like the other movies similar to this one like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, Frankenweenie, etc.
I think...if Emily had been alive...victor would have loved her. Dont get me wrong, he loved her in his own special way, but i think he saw that it just wasnt logical or right to marry a corpse and that he had a perfectly fine and charming young bride back home.
@@lefinlay That's not the point, it would have been nonsense. The thing here is that Emily could finally solve the issues she had with the human world and finally rest in peace.
I know!! I still can't get over it! Emily was the PERFECT bride for victor, I really wish the movie had ended differently, like it would have been nice that Victoria would have met someone differently to fall in love with, as victor would slowly get feelings for Emily, because he was!! It still pisses me off lol
Honestly I think that’s one of the reasons why this movie didn’t really end up being super popular, it was hard to root for Victor and Victoria to get together when there was absolutely no reason why we’d want that. Romantically at least. The piano scene is a perfect example of that, the fact that they complete each other in a little ways or contribute to each other. With Victoria there’s nothing like that.
I loved Emily. But I was glad that the movie ended the way it did. Emily died young, and all she wanted was love, she wanted Victor, but she was dead and in the end she was finally able to go peacefully and have her soul finally rest. It was beautiful.
Tim burton is great. The characters are so real. The animation blows my mind even though it was for fucking 15 years ago. The script, the music, the atmosphere; everything is amazing. Its one of those rare masterpieces that no matter how many times you watch them, it stays great.
If only this was made by Disney "Emily became alive and starts breathing and her heart starts beating due to the true love of Victor n they marry each other and live happily ever after"
It wouldn’t be right if Disney made this it’s just because Tim Burton’s way of choosing the textures, animations, and story is the reason all of us love this Movie 🤧
No the ending was great cause if u really think about it Emily was more in love with the idea of getting married but then she realize she shouldn't take someone elses happiness to please her own.
+Dale Goodsurf Agreed, I believe that what Emily was feeling is called Petrarchan love (in love with the idea of being in love). But it was Victoria and Victor who really longed for one another
Kerry Louise And if u watch the movie you can clearly see that Victor only agreed to marry Emily when he heard that Victoria was gonna get married to another man and if you think about it Victor's mom did say Victoria was the ONLY women Victor knows(Besides his mom ofcurse) soo i guess when he heard Victoria was moving and and getting married Victor went and try to marry his plan B(Emily).
I remember watching this scene when I was younger and thinking it was the most romantic scene in movie history.. and watching it now I know nothing has changed and it has the most beautiful song that always makes me tear up😂
I love this scene of the movie. It’s my favorite scene actually because not only is the piano duet amazing but at how the final result looked. Absolutely amazing 👏👏👏
More reasons why I liked them together. Victoria didn't have as much character as Emily did. You can see how much Emily cared for Victor, Victoria didn't do much but try to run away and such.
Imagine a movie based on Victorias life when victor disapeered, it goes through all the depression of her losing victor, and the stress she also has to go through
+kayceeBurtonFreak I agree. But that's the point and the beautiful tragedy of the movie. Sometimes things get in the way of True Love. Reality intercedes.
That isn't really fair to say because we never really got to see a lot of Victoria's personality except for in the beginning, which I liked. If I were in Victor's shoes I would have done the same thing. I mean your out in the forest, practicing your engagement speech on what you think is a tree branch and suddenly your sucked into the underworld?! How do you think any sane, rational person would react? He didn't belong there, at least not for many years. I felt bad for Emily because of how she died but her time on earth had passed. Victor helped her let go, free her soul and that is what matters.
Loveeee this movie, this scene specially is everything good about Tim Burton: gothic aesthetic mixed with goofy humor, charming, loveable characters and a sweet story
This has always been one of my favorite scenes from corpse bride. At first when Victor begins playing high notes as if he's saying sorry and asking for forgiveness but then Emily plays deep notes like she's rejecting the apology and keeping her anger. Victor tries again in high notes, making Emily begin to calm down and continue in deep notes. Then they begin to play in the same tone of keys as if they are finally communicating and working it out and then Emily gets carried away with the keys which only gave them a laugh and its as if they made up finally. Even though its just keys and notes, its as if they are actually speaking words.
I love this duet as a metaphor for an argument: like it even begins with active listening, he hears what she's saying and reinterprets it faithfully before introducing his own ideas
Sara Villarreal To be fair, she was only boring because her parents gave her no freedom. To Victoria, Victor was a breath of fresh air. He already set Emily free at the end...so now he can set Victoria free in a different way :).
Emily was dead, and I think I overlooked that when I was younger as I watched the film and most of us did. It was just a love story that wasn't meant to be.
if you listen to all the music in the film.. every time these characters are on screen they have their own theme songs playing ... well not every time but it is there most of the time and it has different styles too. :D
The Corpse Bride was such and amazing movie. It was dark yet up beat, and I love the music. Piano is a beautiful instrument. The way it's played in this movie is so amazing. I loved the movie because you want Emily and Victor to end up together, but your still happy for Emily when she passes. It was one movie were they didn't end up together but there was still love.
Emily fell in love with Victor, but still had naive fantasies of true love. Victor grew to like Emily, but agreed to marry her properly after be found out Victoria is marrying someone else and Mayhew told him to move on. In another life, they would've been happy together
Not necessarily "bad", but unpleasant or weird. Some films though are awesome for being weird, taking for instance Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride :D
Because she, despite being dead, is full of life and love. She’s relatable on a level or two, longing for her soul mate, the missing piece of her heart, someone to love her for who she is, not what she has.

So she ends with three words:
“Pardon my enthusiasm”
Words no less honest,
To which he admits his appreciation for it.
Edit: Victoria aint shit #teamemily
Victoria 👏 aint 👏 shit 👏
Omg and just as she starts to enter the major her hand breaks off, symbolizing her getting carried away only for us to be faced with the bitter truth. That despite their chemistry, Emily is dead and Victor is not.
Just gonna say it. They had a billion times more chemistry.
Obviously, the movie is literally centered around them. We didn’t get many scenes with Victor and Victoria.
Thomas probably jasmine most likely. But theres nothing wrong with it.

More reasons why I liked them together. Victoria didn't have as much character as Emily did. You can see how much Emily cared for Victor, Victoria didn't do much but try to run away and such.
To be fair, the audience sees Emily much more than Victoria, so there's more time to get to know her.
Well DUH! The film is named after Emily so it's gonna be based more about her
Imagine a movie based on Victorias life when victor disapeered, it goes through all the depression of her losing victor, and the stress she also has to go through
+kayceeBurtonFreak I agree.
Victor helped her let go, free her soul and that is what matters.
this is the most romantic scene that ever happened
Loveeee this movie, this scene specially is everything good about Tim Burton: gothic aesthetic mixed with goofy humor, charming, loveable characters and a sweet story
Emily : i love you,but you're not mine..

This has always been one of my favorite scenes from corpse bride.
At first when Victor begins playing high notes as if he's saying sorry and asking for forgiveness
but then Emily plays deep notes like she's rejecting the apology and keeping her anger.
Victor tries again in high notes, making Emily begin to calm down and continue in deep notes. Then they begin to play in the same tone of keys as if they are finally communicating and working it out and then Emily gets carried away with the keys which only gave them a laugh and its as if they made up finally.
Even though its just keys and notes, its as if they are actually speaking words.
they wernt playing piano there talking though the music
Also at 0:46 The way Emily's facial expressions here, like she doesn't want to hear his apology. She's such a sweetheart.
I love this duet as a metaphor for an argument: like it even begins with active listening, he hears what she's saying and reinterprets it faithfully before introducing his own ideas
Victoria was so boring, he should have stayed with Emily...

It took me a while, but I finally figured out that Emily is playing a piano version of "Tears To Shed" when Victor comes in.
