    We’ve been struggling with our battery bank for quite some time and we’ve finally gotten around to trying out this battery hack! We have a couple of batteries that are really dragging down the overall voltage of the battery bank and are also showing signs of failing… so this is our last attempt to save those batteries. The best part… if this works, we’re only out $20/battery and each battery can retail at $450 or more! I think it’s worth the test.

    You can check the voltage of each cell. Place the positive probe of your multi meter on the positive terminal, then insert the negative probe into the cell and touch the lead plate. you should see 2.2v plus or minus volts.

  • @stephenhegarty
    @stephenhegarty Před 7 lety +18

    You can check each cell by probing the open fill holes - use a piece of wire attached to the alligator clip on your meter. This will allow you to assess if you have a dead cell. From my experience the last cell (closest to the positive terminal) is always the one that goes (sulphates and shorts out) first.

    Another option for the sulfation problem: I've used a few of the Schumacher Micro-processor controlled Battery Chargers to desulfate automotive batteries with good results. The batteries didn't recover 100%, but it allowed me to used them in vehicles that that were used at least once or twice a week without any problems. If the vehicle wasn't used for a few weeks the battery would tend to discharge because of the elevated internal resistance which was caused by the remaining sulfation on the battery plates.

  • @lomgshorts3
    @lomgshorts3 Před 7 lety +5

    The very first thing you should have done BEFORE opening any cell of the battery is to make the tops squeaky clean. Any dirt/rust/sand can make a high resistant path between the terminals of the battery causing self discharge over a short time. Also, you strongly do not want to have any dirt or rust enter the cells to contaminate them. Do not use Baking soda to "clean" the top of the battery or the battery posts at this time until you are done servicing the cells and the caps are on tight. Use distilled water (never tap or rain water) and clean rags to get the dirt/rust or grease off the top of the battery. I have an 8 year old battery in my truck that was guaranteed for only three years still running strong with no other maintenance but keeping the cell full and cleaning the top of the battery shiny clean.

    Jesse and Alyssa, I love the mountains. The most time I spent near the mountains was in Tacoma, WA for 3 years. Could look at Mt Rainier every morning and watch the changing weather. I made several trips up to the park in different seasons. This last summer I was able to go to Rocky Mountain National Park. There the elk don’t seem to get concerned unless you get real close. I enjoy you guys enthusiasm. My wife and I often talked about getting some land but now those years and health are behind us. So as one of the others said I live vicariously through your videos. Keep up the good work.

    I've seen a similar ice structure, one of my neighbors had one every year. They got their water from a spring and the pipe in the yard runs a trickle of water all winter to keep the line from freezing. Theirs was about 20 feet high so that the ice never got high enough to block the nozzle. On long cold winters it got to be beautiful.

    You can check the voltage in individual cells using a simple multi tester set to DV volts. Read between positive terminal and put the neg probe down in the cell until it contacts the top of the plate. Your golf cart battery should be 2v+ in each cell.

    Trojan T-105 batteries are the best for this application. I had a off-grid FLOATING cabin in B.C. that was 30 minutes by boat to the nearest town. They were extremely reliable and will easily last 10 years if maintained properly. The single-point watering kit precise watering is so easy and time saving. Look into them when you upgrade next.

    I was just typing a comment to tell you about using baking soda to neutralize the old acid then you read it on the box. I always mix up a bunch of baking soda into some water and dip my rag in it to wipe up the top of the battery and terminals too. Just make sure you put the caps on first so you don't end up getting the baking soda into the cells

  • @daleaferrrier
    @daleaferrrier Před 7 lety +3

    You can test each cell by putting your voltmeter probe down in the electolyte itself and measuring on one of the battery terminals. This will measure from the closest cell to that terminal and add each cell to the voltage as you go further away from that terminal. So closest should be about what one cell would measure and then 2nd would be about what 2 cells in series should measure. In this way you can quickly see if a cell is dead. So if each cell should measure about 3 volts and you get to the 2nd cell and the voltage stays about the same as the first cell then the 2nd cell is dead.

    Several different things can make the electrolytes settle to the bottom of the battery. In which case, all you need to do is run a good equalizing charge to the battery. Get the electrolyte to boil a bit. That will remix the electrolytes with the water.

    Ever hear of an "equalizing charge"? Charge the battery after cleaning at 20 to 40 amps for 1/2 hour to the point where you hear the battery bubble inside, then stop, let the battery stop bubbling and cool off. Then do a hydrometer check, and go from one cell to the next to see if specific gravity has risen. Then, if the specific gravity has risen, do the voltmeter check going from one cell to the nest using probes cut from a metal coat hanger. Each cell should read 2.1VDC or a value close to that. Adding more sulfuric acid will only gain you a brief respite as the acid eats away at the plates and destroys the battery. The plates are already sulphated, why add more sulfuric acid?

    Hey Guys, To do a good equalization or solid charge with such a used battery you should use a charger with at least 15% of the 20 hr total AMPHR of the battery, in your case probably around 45 amps, and you could equalize over 8 volts and that may overcome the the added resistance of the sulfation., you could wire your inverter charger to do just one batt at time instead of equalizing all your batts at the same time if it doesn't have the capacity...

    Maybe something to consider for your future battery storage for your final solar project, Possibly consider building an underground cellar or block wall shelter with steel decking to pour a slab over the top to house your future batteries in, with appropriate pipe ventilation. Being underground the temp values generally don't go under 43 degree F even at 5' underground. I'm not an insulation expert, maybe it would make more sense to build an above ground structure with heavy insulation for the winter time battery storage..thoughts?

    You can buy "special" chargers for deep cycle leisure batteries, they aren't cheap but I have managed to de-sulphur a set of expensive boat batteries with one, it took almost a week on a mains power supply, the charger was a CTEK Multi XS 3600, afterwards the batteries lasted for a good four years and were still going strong when the boat was sold, so £75 for the charger, saved £460 for another set of batteries.

    You can check the voltage of each cell independently by Connecting one lead of volt meter to one terminal of battery and with the caps removed put the other VM lead into the neighboring cell. To check the next cell put the lead from the battery post into the first cells electrolyte and the other lead into the next cell. Then repeat. If the leads do not fit into the battery, or are too short, use a wire or a screwdriver and attach the lead to that with an alligator clip.

    A couple of things to think about on your next battery fix.
    *Acquire a rubber apron to protect your clothes
    *Eye protection-pouring that acid out could easily splash into your eyes
    *Baking Soda and water-will dilute any acid left on tailgate, side of battery, gloves, etc.

    To check each cell try this on for size. Put the negative test lead onto the battery ground and then start with the cell closest to the negative terminal place the tip of your positive test lead into the battery acid of the first cell and if it’s a 6v battery, the first cell should read 2.1v. The next cell should read 4.2 or so and the third should read over 6v. If either one of the cells doesn’t show a change of voltage then that cell is shorted out and the battery is no good and can’t be reconditioned.

    Check with your local full service John Deere dealer (not HD or Lowe's, etc) for acid disposal. As a service manager with a Minnesota JD dealer, we constantly have farmers bringing in (and asking for) all kinds of used fluids. Keep up the good work... and don't forget....Illegitimi non carborundum.

    be sure to get a strong desulfator as well because the sulfur crystals will reduce capaciy

    2 things Freezing a battery will usually ruin it because it distorts and or destroyers the batteries innards. 2 Never ever put electrolite in a used battery as it will ruin it. Them batteries at 8 years ild have very well served their useful life.

      BTW please wear goggles when handling and pouring acid. When I was younger the weight of the battery was more than I could carry and as I quickly tried to get it on the ground it fell 6 inches or so and the acid came through the vent and into my eyes. Luckily my dad was right there and new what to do with the washing of it out. Also, suggest reviewing what if something went wrong what you both need to do it get it sorted out. Just saying... :)

      Vaseline is definitely a good move! Stops corrosion and sulphation of the terminals dead ;0) ...... The goggles seem a good idea too, but each to his own (they are not my eyes after all) But I come from a heavily HSE regulated area!

    To check the voltage in each cell leave a probe in one cell and one in the next call. Only put the probe in the acid, do not touch the plates. This will isolate each cell. I used a solid piece of romex for probes.

  • @paul3502
    @paul3502 Před 7 lety +1

    you can dip your other probe in a cell and get the reading from that sell then the second cell will read the voltage from the first and second sell and on and on

    For disposing of acid. Take a 5 gal. bucket put some water mixed with baking soda. Dump your acid in the bucket. Now you have a bucket of water with a pH close to 0. You can use a fish tank test kit if you'd like. At that point it is safe to put down the drain.

    Appreciate all the work ,educating me, on these topics. Im such a navies on batteries.
    Q: I do need to know what amp hour is this battery refurb?
    Im going to search in vids of yours to look for DEEP CYCLE battery's in RV for dummies. I did learn what I can do to warm batterys and charging. I have a 2500 Honda. Great gen and appreciate knowing how Honda is handling this issue.
    So enjoyed the ride and elk AND the snow box .Enjoy this life Im very happy for you both. Jp from the great state of OK!

    Cold weather Generator issue. You need to divert warm cooling air from the motor into the air filter intake to stop carburetor icing. look at how snowblower engines are set up boxes around carbs to gather heat. Could probably loose the air filter for the winter too.
