We’ve been struggling with our battery bank for quite some time and we’ve finally gotten around to trying out this battery hack! We have a couple of batteries that are really dragging down the overall voltage of the battery bank and are also showing signs of failing… so this is our last attempt to save those batteries. The best part… if this works, we’re only out $20/battery and each battery can retail at $450 or more! I think it’s worth the test.

Watch at 1.5x Speed. Share to save a life.
For everyone watching this, make sure to wear eye protection anytime working this batteries and acid. Protect your eyes, you can't go back once you damage your vision.
I was psyched to see a 34 minute video from you guys. That battery restoration was one of the clearest DIY projects to follow ive ever watched on youtube. Your content is extremely thorough, well thought out, and awesome. Thank you for the hard work you both put in. I am happy to see you guys doing so well and sharing your off grid lifestyle that is so refreshing and beautiful.
You can check the voltage of each cell. Place the positive probe of your multi meter on the positive terminal, then insert the negative probe into the cell and touch the lead plate. you should see 2.2v plus or minus volts.
You can check each cell by probing the open fill holes - use a piece of wire attached to the alligator clip on your meter. This will allow you to assess if you have a dead cell. From my experience the last cell (closest to the positive terminal) is always the one that goes (sulphates and shorts out) first.
Your videos by your journey teach. That is something that is missing from so many channels. Good job.
Another option for the sulfation problem: I've used a few of the Schumacher Micro-processor controlled Battery Chargers to desulfate automotive batteries with good results. The batteries didn't recover 100%, but it allowed me to used them in vehicles that that were used at least once or twice a week without any problems. If the vehicle wasn't used for a few weeks the battery would tend to discharge because of the elevated internal resistance which was caused by the remaining sulfation on the battery plates.
The very first thing you should have done BEFORE opening any cell of the battery is to make the tops squeaky clean. Any dirt/rust/sand can make a high resistant path between the terminals of the battery causing self discharge over a short time. Also, you strongly do not want to have any dirt or rust enter the cells to contaminate them. Do not use Baking soda to "clean" the top of the battery or the battery posts at this time until you are done servicing the cells and the caps are on tight. Use distilled water (never tap or rain water) and clean rags to get the dirt/rust or grease off the top of the battery. I have an 8 year old battery in my truck that was guaranteed for only three years still running strong with no other maintenance but keeping the cell full and cleaning the top of the battery shiny clean.
Love your videos, thanks for sharing your beautiful part of theworld. Also thanks for thebattery info.
WOW! Those drone tracking shots of the mountain lake are so beautiful!
Jesse and Alyssa, I love the mountains. The most time I spent near the mountains was in Tacoma, WA for 3 years. Could look at Mt Rainier every morning and watch the changing weather. I made several trips up to the park in different seasons. This last summer I was able to go to Rocky Mountain National Park. There the elk don’t seem to get concerned unless you get real close. I enjoy you guys enthusiasm. My wife and I often talked about getting some land but now those years and health are behind us. So as one of the others said I live vicariously through your videos. Keep up the good work.
+Larry Stockwell We totally know what you mean Larry! Rocky Mountain park is one of our favorites. Rainier is now slouch either. Happy the views we shared bring back fond memories. We once sat high up in Rocky Mountain park on a cool summer night and watched lightening storms in Wyoming for several hours. An experience we won't soon forget!
I really admire both of you, and look forward to each video you share. Thanks so much! Love you!!
When replacing the electrolythe, do the first charge with open caps, preventing possibly gas pressure.
Just in case.
Great video, informative and I'm glad you both are getting out to have fun.
Thank you for this informative video!
Great video, very informative. You both have inspired me to move from a big city to a self sustained house in the country.
You only live once, enjoy life to the fullest.
It's good that you took the gloves off when you were actually touching the contaminated parts, and then put them on again when you weren't touching anything nasty! ;)
Always so pleasant to see that you are happy of life and enjoying it.
You are certainly consistent in providing really good information. I have been subscribed for awhile now, and I look forward to each new video. Goggles....safety goggles! LOL! I know right where you were and that is a gorgeous place. Thanks for continuing to spread the word about facts through sharing your experiences. Stay warm and keep on dancin'
VERY interesting!
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing !
Leaving me hanging Jesse! I loved watching you drone on about batteries and patiently look forward to the conclusion!
Hey Bud! On some of the homesteads it is the men that find mechanics boring and some of us gals are the electrician/mechanics.
Thanks for sharing. Beautiful country! Easy to see why you are homesteading. Have fun.
Maybe a year in the day of that area u said changes so much but still beautiful, same spot same time everyday type thing, those are so cool to watch
very useful video with some really beautiful footage, pls dont forget to upload the 2nd part :-) Thank you
I've seen a similar ice structure, one of my neighbors had one every year. They got their water from a spring and the pipe in the yard runs a trickle of water all winter to keep the line from freezing. Theirs was about 20 feet high so that the ice never got high enough to block the nozzle. On long cold winters it got to be beautiful.
Yes backing soda does kill acid, we used it on the farm many times. It will keep you safe and is good to keep by your side anytime you are working with any acid just in case you get some on you.
Love your videos, guys! Y'all are like family cuz i see you so much. LOL. Also...I knew most of that stuff about the batteries, but some was a real eye opener and refresher course. Thanks and keep up the good work and great videos!
You can check the voltage in individual cells using a simple multi tester set to DV volts. Read between positive terminal and put the neg probe down in the cell until it contacts the top of the plate. Your golf cart battery should be 2v+ in each cell.
Great job on those drone shots of the mountain and trees in the foreground.
Looking forward to an update about the fix. Good luck - hopefully you'll be able to restore some useful life in those bad batteries.
Hey Jessie,
Very nicely paced explanation on the battery issue ; Your tech-talk skills are coming along nicely !
Sundancer.
Love the outdoor fun shots on the ending
Trojan T-105 batteries are the best for this application. I had a off-grid FLOATING cabin in B.C. that was 30 minutes by boat to the nearest town. They were extremely reliable and will easily last 10 years if maintained properly. The single-point watering kit precise watering is so easy and time saving. Look into them when you upgrade next.
ha ha LOVE the Squirrel Mode Voice :) keep up the good work !!!
Great video. Cant wait for part 2.
Eye and hand protection at all times please!!! You owe it to each other to look after yourselves!
i really enjoyed watching this ,
I was just typing a comment to tell you about using baking soda to neutralize the old acid then you read it on the box. I always mix up a bunch of baking soda into some water and dip my rag in it to wipe up the top of the battery and terminals too. Just make sure you put the caps on first so you don't end up getting the baking soda into the cells
You can test each cell by putting your voltmeter probe down in the electolyte itself and measuring on one of the battery terminals. This will measure from the closest cell to that terminal and add each cell to the voltage as you go further away from that terminal. So closest should be about what one cell would measure and then 2nd would be about what 2 cells in series should measure. In this way you can quickly see if a cell is dead. So if each cell should measure about 3 volts and you get to the 2nd cell and the voltage stays about the same as the first cell then the 2nd cell is dead.
This was a great learning video :) Thanx
Safety sally says "Where's your eye protection?" Hmmm? Lol. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for scenery video. Now I can sit back and enjoy the 80 degree weather😎
Several different things can make the electrolytes settle to the bottom of the battery. In which case, all you need to do is run a good equalizing charge to the battery. Get the electrolyte to boil a bit. That will remix the electrolytes with the water.
I highly recommend using Royal Purple HPS 0w-20 in the geny, I run it in all my small engines (most are hondas) and my old man's van. I use 10w-30 in the rest of my trucks and boats, mostly because I live in South Texas and we get over 100 degrees. great video
Great videos love the life style.
you guy's are awesome thanks for sharing
You guys are awesome. Thanks for the view. Nothing like Texas lol
I'm just getting started with 15 acres in South Oklahoma. Taking in all the info I can. Be great, I'll be watching
Ever hear of an "equalizing charge"? Charge the battery after cleaning at 20 to 40 amps for 1/2 hour to the point where you hear the battery bubble inside, then stop, let the battery stop bubbling and cool off. Then do a hydrometer check, and go from one cell to the next to see if specific gravity has risen. Then, if the specific gravity has risen, do the voltmeter check going from one cell to the nest using probes cut from a metal coat hanger. Each cell should read 2.1VDC or a value close to that. Adding more sulfuric acid will only gain you a brief respite as the acid eats away at the plates and destroys the battery. The plates are already sulphated, why add more sulfuric acid?
Yes beautiful mountains!
For all the curious out there, when he's speaking about gravity it is in fact the specific gravity which is simply the density of the liquid. I had to look it up on wiki. Good video =)
PS : Eyewear AND a bottle of water around next time you play with acid =)
a 0w20 oil is the required oil for a lot of Honda cars and Toyota cars since 2012. good oil. just make sure you change the oil to a summer blend when the weather warms up. good tips you provided.
Great video again and teaching others how to do it right!!Where are you located and do you live there all year round??
You can measure each cell by inserting a probe into the electrolyte. start with a post and first hole then between holes etc.
I am very interested in the results of the battery test, especially because I was in that part of the world in 96 and 2017, being back home in Sydney Australia our weather is completely the opposite to yours, I just love the whole bit and appreciate the technology we have these days to relive our wonderful memories, I really admire your achievements as well as looking forward to the finished results, hammer on...
cuff gloves to prevent acid drops from running up your sleives (sp)
Hi you guys! I don't think I have ever commented, but just want you to know you have another great fan! I have a deep love for the outdoors as well. I do have an RV and park it in the mountains and commute to beauty for 3 day weekends during the spring, summer and fall. I live in the SW plains of New Mexico (Roswell LOL!!) and go to Mayhill, NM for mountain retreat. Keep up the great work, I find your Vids informative and fun to watch. I have watched you both from your start. Hugs, Annie G.
We truly enjoy watching your journey of discovery. It brings us joy. Thank you for sharing. What is the name of the music you use in this video? We have look through the post and searched on the royalty free site and con not find.
Wow great video. I've been a subscriber since your first video and I really feel this is your best! Not just production/editing but sharing your Honda experience was excellent info. Also your 10 Ugly truths video is A+. Please repost your Amazon link, you have really shared some valuable info I am noting before my off grid move. Huge Thanks!!
Great video, we have decided that we will only need about a hundred watts. we are going to go super low tech as to not have the expenses on the back side. we are going to use gas for freezer, we will only need to charge a couple lap tops and some 12 volt led lights.
Hey Guys, To do a good equalization or solid charge with such a used battery you should use a charger with at least 15% of the 20 hr total AMPHR of the battery, in your case probably around 45 amps, and you could equalize over 8 volts and that may overcome the the added resistance of the sulfation., you could wire your inverter charger to do just one batt at time instead of equalizing all your batts at the same time if it doesn't have the capacity...
Maybe something to consider for your future battery storage for your final solar project, Possibly consider building an underground cellar or block wall shelter with steel decking to pour a slab over the top to house your future batteries in, with appropriate pipe ventilation. Being underground the temp values generally don't go under 43 degree F even at 5' underground. I'm not an insulation expert, maybe it would make more sense to build an above ground structure with heavy insulation for the winter time battery storage..thoughts?
You can buy "special" chargers for deep cycle leisure batteries, they aren't cheap but I have managed to de-sulphur a set of expensive boat batteries with one, it took almost a week on a mains power supply, the charger was a CTEK Multi XS 3600, afterwards the batteries lasted for a good four years and were still going strong when the boat was sold, so £75 for the charger, saved £460 for another set of batteries.
I've learned quite a bit from the videos that you've posted... want to continue learning more. So if I may ask.. please wear proper protective equipment... especially with acid (protective apron, acid gloves, eye protection, and a face shield).
You guys are good I love your videos
You can check the voltage of each cell independently by Connecting one lead of volt meter to one terminal of battery and with the caps removed put the other VM lead into the neighboring cell. To check the next cell put the lead from the battery post into the first cells electrolyte and the other lead into the next cell. Then repeat. If the leads do not fit into the battery, or are too short, use a wire or a screwdriver and attach the lead to that with an alligator clip.
It is so beautiful there.
I want to live this way.
How difficult is it to get medical supplies/treatment and stuff like insulin for diabetics?
Wow what a beautiful place to live!
Jesse,
A couple of things to think about on your next battery fix.
*Acquire a rubber apron to protect your clothes
*Eye protection-pouring that acid out could easily splash into your eyes
*Baking Soda and water-will dilute any acid left on tailgate, side of battery, gloves, etc.
I'm not one of those that harps about safety, I'm just reflecting from my own experience.
You two did some AMAZING videography....and seeing God's creatures out and about is always a plus.
Loved the Deer and the Elk!! The area around that little lake reminded me of Alaska especially the views of the Mountains! That is what I would love to see Everyday!! Heck I see deer every few days in my back yard, But I would love to have views of mountains like that from my yard!!
Eye protection highly reccomended as well as a bottle of water on stby in case of a bad splash....
The "W" on the oil stands for winter(not weight as most people think) or how the oils viscosity when its cold, the 20 in your case is the viscosity when it's warm. Good luck with the batteries and generator.
You can also test each cell by simply putting the multimeter lead in the cell, you can then see the change per cell and identify "dead cells" you also need to put on a respirator, breathing in the fumes are bad on the lungs, dead acid or not.
As for the generator I bought a used Onan from a RV trailer and it's a diesel engine with lots of Volts per hour a gallon. Most are insulated because they sit under a A class or C class camper.
I recommend getting another, higher current, 3 stage, deep cycle battery charger. Those big batteries can take A LOT of current, especially in cold weather. The 3 stage charging is really key if you want to do the best job.
I'm very curious to see the outcome of the batteries, great video! Also, thanks for the update on the generator. I'm surprised to here that Honda more or less used you as a guinea pig to solve the issue on your dime, now we know not to buy any type of extended warranty.
DUDE! No Eye Pro?
If you fill with distilled water, drain, fill with distilled water, drain, then you get a good purge.
Some even use a little baking soda in the first wash of distilled water.
THEN You fill it up with electrolyte.
Ever try hooking it up directly to the DC? Hear it works better. Still waiting to do it myself lol
Also Might want to label that Kerosene can as GASOLINE ONLY! You never know what could happen :)
Love the videos and looking forward to the next one. You guys are a big inspiration to my build
I think what are is grate hope see more don't give up .keep it going
But I really really really want to watch part 2 now ☹️
Very informative ... and thanks for the look at your happy place both 🙂
To check each cell try this on for size. Put the negative test lead onto the battery ground and then start with the cell closest to the negative terminal place the tip of your positive test lead into the battery acid of the first cell and if it’s a 6v battery, the first cell should read 2.1v. The next cell should read 4.2 or so and the third should read over 6v. If either one of the cells doesn’t show a change of voltage then that cell is shorted out and the battery is no good and can’t be reconditioned.
Check with your local full service John Deere dealer (not HD or Lowe's, etc) for acid disposal. As a service manager with a Minnesota JD dealer, we constantly have farmers bringing in (and asking for) all kinds of used fluids. Keep up the good work... and don't forget....Illegitimi non carborundum.
really nice video😃
Your video are very professional along with the music.
ROLF. The guy is clueless...
be sure to get a strong desulfator as well because the sulfur crystals will reduce capaciy
2 things Freezing a battery will usually ruin it because it distorts and or destroyers the batteries innards. 2 Never ever put electrolite in a used battery as it will ruin it. Them batteries at 8 years ild have very well served their useful life.
Beautiful scenery, Love your videos, keep up the great work!Lol, flock of goats, lol
good video.
Baking soda trick on the first on terminals and top of the battery then vaseline on the terminals as well to your car as well.
BTW please wear goggles when handling and pouring acid. When I was younger the weight of the battery was more than I could carry and as I quickly tried to get it on the ground it fell 6 inches or so and the acid came through the vent and into my eyes. Luckily my dad was right there and new what to do with the washing of it out. Also, suggest reviewing what if something went wrong what you both need to do it get it sorted out. Just saying... :)
Vaseline is definitely a good move! Stops corrosion and sulphation of the terminals dead ;0) ...... The goggles seem a good idea too, but each to his own (they are not my eyes after all) But I come from a heavily HSE regulated area!
To check the voltage in each cell leave a probe in one cell and one in the next call. Only put the probe in the acid, do not touch the plates. This will isolate each cell. I used a solid piece of romex for probes.
you can dip your other probe in a cell and get the reading from that sell then the second cell will read the voltage from the first and second sell and on and on
very lovely an peaceful
For disposing of acid. Take a 5 gal. bucket put some water mixed with baking soda. Dump your acid in the bucket. Now you have a bucket of water with a pH close to 0. You can use a fish tank test kit if you'd like. At that point it is safe to put down the drain.
Appreciate all the work ,educating me, on these topics. Im such a navies on batteries.
Q: I do need to know what amp hour is this battery refurb?
Im going to search in vids of yours to look for DEEP CYCLE battery's in RV for dummies. I did learn what I can do to warm batterys and charging. I have a 2500 Honda. Great gen and appreciate knowing how Honda is handling this issue.
So enjoyed the ride and elk AND the snow box .Enjoy this life Im very happy for you both. Jp from the great state of OK!
Thnx for reminding me again that I know sh&t about the stuff we use the whole freakin time ;) Will check out the uni...
"Positive movement" lol, I see what you did there!
Cold weather Generator issue. You need to divert warm cooling air from the motor into the air filter intake to stop carburetor icing. look at how snowblower engines are set up boxes around carbs to gather heat. Could probably loose the air filter for the winter too.
Liked and subscribed...You guys are awesome...Myself and family are looking to get up to the Northern Idaho in the next year ish...My wife is like ready to just get an RV(hopefully Tomorrow) and she is like. lets just get some property live in the RV while we build off the land...Look forward to getting into your videos, Thanks and cheers from So Cal...
