Our son is almost 7 years old and very small his age as he was born a micro preemie. He is a very experienced rider and loves trail riding as well as around the neighborhood. Our issue is because of his size he is on a 16 bike (currently a Gaurdian) but is very frustrated not being able to fit on most 20 inch bikes. He is nearly 7 and does not want to be on a 16 inch, also he really needs something with gears which is pretty impossible to find in a 16inch. We need something lightweight as he is 40lbs, something with gears and 20 inch. I'm thinking this prevelo alpha 3 might just be our answer!! Thanks for your honesty review of this bike!!

We outgrew the isla 14 bike. Loved it. Trying to decide if at age 5 I should do prevelo alpha two or three.

Great review. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Would you give your opinion about Priority Start 20 and Specialized Jett 20 when comparing to Prevelo Alpha 3.
    Thanks so much

I haven’t seen a priority but I would look at weight and stand over.

@@CargoBikeLifecom thanks for getting back on this comment.
I already checked the specs on paper. I was looking more at your opinion if you have experience with it .

Any tips on teaching gears to children? My son recently learned to ride on a woom 4 and we are still trying to figure them out.
Also, what are the key differences between the prevalo and the woom 5? Trying to figure out the besr 24" (for next year) for my new rider. 7yr old. ~50-51" tall.

"Smallest bike with gears" is the reason I'm eyeing this one. My kiddo will be turning 6 early next summer, and we live and bike in a very hilly city. BUT, my kiddo is an absolute peanut - she's still on a 14" woom 2 (which she's on the cusp of outgrowing), and I'm a bit worried about the size/weight jump of moving up to a 20" bike. Even this one. She'll be like 35-36 lbs I'm guessing. I suppose we should go for it, and if it's really unwieldy she can keep riding her smaller bike and/or we can add a 16" bike in the middle... I wish we had somewhere to test-ride one.

Hmm. Unless she’s really huge on the Woom 2 it is hard to see a kid make the jump without something in the middle.
Have you measured her inseam to see how she’ll fit?

Great review!! Do you have any thoughts on Belsize? They are made by Continental, and their 20” is 14 lbs.; but just one gear.

I’ve never heard of that brand. I can’t imagine my 20” biking kids not having gears and trying to ride with me. Their little legs would go crazy!

@@CargoBikeLifecom I figured I would get her something a bit more simple to start with, and if she takes to riding, I’ll upgrade, ha ha! She is growing fast! She has a 6’ 3” father, so I have a feeling she will outgrow this one in a few years. We will see.

I'm deciding between a Woom 5 and Prevelo Alpha 4. We live in the city, our neighborhood is pretty hilly, and my daughter is very athletic and loves speed. She is 53" tall w/ 23.75" inseam no shoes, 24.5 with shoes. She was born in the 97% for height and is still above 90% and just turned 7. We may try some light trails but it's mostly going to be used riding around the city and hilly parks. Which bike should I buy? is there another 24" bike you would recommend over the Prevelo 4 or Woom 5?

      Heya!
I would check out the Cannondale quick 24 for what they are going to be doing. Great weight and sizing for the price.
For the 24”, you can’t go wrong with either the Prevelo or Woom. The Woom has the adjustable stem and the Prevelo has the lower stand over. If she doesn’t need the stand over, the Woom is great. Let me know if you need help with the stand over.

@@CargoBikeLifecom Hi! I looked at the Cannondale and was worried that the color would be too light and get dirty. Same concern with the woom and the white areas. Also, the color selections with woom are not fun at 24”. The only color she would commit to was red and every toddler in NYC has a red Woom.
I ended up pre-ordering a Prevelo Alpha 4 in purple today. My friends son has a specialized, I thought the colors were fun but not really sold on the bike itself. Is there a place where you can get a kids bike custom painted? Why are all the 24” bikes the cutoff for fun colors? Frog has great colors. I did like Pellos hot pink but didn’t want a long lead time. The longest I could wait was until March for a Prevelo. However, none of the pictures should the same shade of purple for the Alpha 4. Is there a place to actually see what the purple will really look like?
Now if only I could get a helmet recommendation. Black girl magic doesn’t always fit inside a helmet depending on the hairstyle of the day. Some days it’s 2 ponytails and sometimes it’s an curly fro.

Looking at this bike for my 5 year old twins. They are pretty aggressive with their bikes and we live in a hilly road area with trails in the back. Would you recommend this over the Woom? We’ve also looked at the FROG but not sure I need two sets of tires to be switching out.

    • @CargoBikeLifecom

For trails, I prefer the Prevelo. Frog is nice but expensive. The Prevelo is lighter, right?

Just got it looks very cool. Just noticed the back wheel when I spin it even with the breaks undone only spin a few turns before it stops, is that normal for kids bike?
