More people need to know that Duel Masters started life as a MTG manga. It's what introduced me to Magic. When asked "who's your favorite MTG character?" People might say Chandra or Jace. Me? Shoubu Kirifuda. He technically counts.

I had no idea Duel Masters started out as a Magic the gathering Manga

I didn't either but there is a new magic manga out with a catchy translated name "destroy all humanity: it can't be regenerated"

Oh my god where has your channel been all my life. Found you through the Build Divide how to and going through all of this. This is so good! Great presentation and super well-informed. It's hard to find English info about this early history of Japanese TCGs. Looking forward to watching the rest of it!

    Another great one. Some thoughts
1- It was great seing the weakness/resistance mechanic of Pokemon mentioned in this one. One of the main aspects to diferentiate pokemon from magic
2- the way the story includes dual masters and yugioh was done elegantely
3- from what a can gather the prizes/ shield mechanic is prevalent in most japanese card games. the way pokemon does it has always botherered me because it locks away a part of your deck. Also, as mentioned in the video, it work to reward the person already ahed.
4- thinking of yugioh, it is interesting to think that is took things from both Magic and pokenon, namely the life point system from Magic and the faster, less restrictive pace of pokemon.

Citation on Nakamura designing DM? He isn't listed anywhere as a designer for the game and the game is accredited to Mike Elliot with Charlie Catano, and Tyler Bielman.

The author of the original manga, Matsumoto, credits Nakamura with designing DM in one of the afterwards/omake. During his time as technical advisor on the manga he created the initial DM rules and creatures introduced in volume 7, which differ slightly from the final published game. (The relevant chapters were originally serialized in CoroCoro about four months before Wizards published Base Set, and IIRC the actual printed cards had different mana costs and effects from how they appeared in those chapters, but Shields and Double Breaker were already as we know them.) Nakamura's company website, Yuhodo, also credits him with the DM TCG's creative direction until booster set 3. I believe Elliott once mentioned Nakamura's work in an interview, but I don't have it on hand at the moment.
There might be some regional bias going on across the languages here, because it's as hard to find Japanese materials referring to Elliott, Catano & Bielman as it is to find mentions of Nakamura in English.

duel masters was also great because it fixed the mana drought/flood problems (as each monster was also a mana card)
