(STEAM RETURNS TO THE MOUNTAINS) Chasing The Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad’s First Run Since 2020
Vložit
- čas přidán 31. 08. 2023
- Todays the day, I have finally caught the Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad’s first run since 2020, Polson Logging Co. 70 pulls 4 cars on its way to Mineral Washington, we were ready to go home until we saw it chugging it’s way back to Elbe.
I then caught the train at the crossing next to the station, it was strange because the crossing at the end of the video was bumping on and off
I’m not too surprised by this because the track has been dormant for over 3 years
Awesome! Thanks so much for coming out and putting this together!
thank you so much, it got so popular even the official MRSR commented on this!
That old beast has a beautiful whistle. This is great footage - nice to see how many people came out to see her too!
It is nice to see it too
That whistle sounds pretty close to a PRR 3 chime
@@user-eh1ml1cr1c they're taking passengers for a ride
It's a 6-Inch Ashton 3-Chime whistle. Originally worn by Porter Engine Number #5 back in the 80s-90s until she was withdrawn in 2003. It was then placed on Engine Number #17 in 2014. Unfortunately Engine Number #17 has run into A LOT of problems, so it's now Number #70 that wears the Ashton Whistle because all the crews love it so much. And I will agree, it's the best sounding whistle in the entire fleet, and Number #70 is their most beautiful locomotive, so a perfect match. :)
I could listen to that whistle all day long. I envy the crew for being able to operate such a fantastic locomotive.
It was really loud as well
The sound of the whistle sends a shiver down the spine.
interesting
Right? There’s just something about it…
A proper sounding one, unlike some on more modern steam locos.
@@gravelydon7072 yep, couldn’t agree more, a proper sounding whistle indeed
Yep, but that bell on American locos!!! In Australia, there is not need for the bell so you just get that beautiful multi tone chime whistle!
I am so happy to see the MRSR back running! This warms my heart, and to hear that whistle makes it all. Now I only wish I was up there to enjoy all of this. Give it time, I retire in a few years, and I can see me volunteering there every chance I can get.
It is a very nice railroad, and #70 has a very nice whistle, thanks for watching
Love to see a vintage steamer running through this area. But I just can't help but imagine about 50 years ago when Milwaukee Road log trains used to make their run on these rails. Very nice video.
thanks
Welcome Home and Welcome back Mt. Rainer Scenic Railroad ! We missed you ! Good to hear the whistle again.
Yeah
We used to live in Eatonville where it would occasionally come through. That beautiful whistle always brought us out to see it.
It’s incredible to see the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad back in action!
It is, I had planned this for 3 weeks!
Why 3 weeks?
@@mlptf I just saw the train was running in 3 weeks so I decided to plan something
So I see.
The town needs to update the website unless the train is not taking passengers .
“The Mt. Rainier Railroad & Museum once offered excursions on tour trains. Now closed for 2023, the nonprofit railroad is working to reopen in the future. Perhaps in 2024, visitors can hear the sound of the steam engines chuffing or the piercing cry of the steam whistle as it blows through the Nisqually Valley.”
interesting
What? It’s open.
@@North_Cascade_Railfanthat’s what I’m saying, they probably need to update, it has been 3 years tho
It's nice to see steam on old MRSR again. I sure would like to see them bring back the geared steam locomotives that they are famous for, like Rayonier No. 2, Hillcrest Lumber No. 10, Pickering Lumber No. 11, and Heisler No. 91. I still have a cassette tape (somewhere) of when the latter three performed a triple-header in the 90's.
For now, Polson logging 70 is their only operating locomotive
Those old Shay locomotives are beautiful!
@@haroldishoy2113 yes they are, thanks for watching the video
Then five went!
the most beatuiful whistle ive ever heard ❤
and loudest as well
This and NP 924 are the two best whistles ever,
This sure takes me back with the bell, horn, miss those days and sound. Beautiful watching and hearing this all, thank you.
Thank the railroad museums
Awesome video! Glad to see them back up and running! I see they have #5's Ashton 3 chime on #70, still sounds great too!
Yes they do
Nice to see the train return. On a visit to Washington my brother took me on the train along some boy scouts. It was great.
Cool
Am so happy to see this and hear that whistle and the rail cars moving along. The last outing I was able to take my father on was in about ‘09 on the MRSR and he thoroughly enjoyed it, he passed in 2012 and I still have the photos of that experience. Wherever the Army sent him to go it was by rail or by ocean liner.
I’m so sorry for your loss, my condolences go out to you and your family
@@TravelingRailfan501 Thank you kindly, the happy memories remain.
It's so nice to see when railroads come back!
Yes it is!
Shock wave from the whistle.
Figures. I was in Washington four weeks ago and wanted to visit this railroad but learned it had been closed for a couple years. Now it is running again. I hope it is in operation when I next get out there.
I believe they have some really big projects in the works. Going to get the tracks out to Eatonville sorted out, and have a museum built out there so apparently will be able to run from Eatonville to Mineral. Hoping beyond hope, but it would be so cool if they could fix the tracks to Morton and run lumber into Tacoma from there for some revenue generation. Plus, would be a nice trip to take the train into Morton for the loggers jubilee!
yay welcome back
I think some of the crossings need a gate
I completely agree
Someone ALMOST got hit today
Don't you just love that whistle and its echo?!
Yes I do
Thank you so much for filming this! What a beautiful train!
You are very welcome
Beautiful, I’m going Sunday (Tomorrow)
Cool
Train leaves at 11:00 AM, it runs until 3:00 PM
You can check their website, they run on saturdays and sundays
September through October 29th
Yeah git the schedule, they went flying and tried to make me deaf at 702’s second crossing.
Nice video. This steam locomotive looks very good and she runs well too. Cheers Josh
Thanks for watching
Welcome back happy to see the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad back in operation again. Hope to return someday.
The train has stunning views
You really need that blast on the whistle considering that there are no crossing gates. Beautiful video.
Thanks
So glad to see this historic railroad back running again, hoping to go there sometime in the future!
well, the railroad stops running October 29th, so be sure to go when you can
Don’t think we’ll be able to make it before October but we’ll definitely visit there with the next few years or so!
@@TyTytheTrainGuy you will love it, i promise
Thank you for bringing this to mind, as I have wanted to introduce grandkids to this kind of train and experience!
You are very welcome
They have a steam train AND an A.A. meeting!
My son is special needs and he is glad the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad is up and running again and hopes that real soon #17, HK Porter #5, Hiesler #91, Shay #11, Climax #10, and Willamette #3 are all restored to operation but he does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality. He also recommends FMW Solutions for help in their restorations.
It's good to see old train's back on the tracks again
Made some fond memories here and was sad reading the announcement that they were closing down in 2020. Glad to see them running again!
im happy too
Respect to the chap who moved back out of the way at 4.24, Also a great Upload.
Thanks
Something ghostly about that whistle 😮
Fantastic job filming and sharing!!! Thanks!
no problem
Been so long drivers ignore the crossing signals and blow right through.
yes, it has been.
when I was there, I was thinking.
"these cars have no idea that a train is going to come through" lol
Great video. Thanks for posting!
No problem
That whistle and bell is so relaxing to hear. What a sight and what a sound.
it was very very loud as well
@@TravelingRailfan501 well, it's relaxing from a distance anyway lol
Awesome video Konlin great job on the chase, but also glad to see the railroad pulling an excursion train again.
Thank you so much for commenting
As this train was approaching the terminal we saw a car run through the nearby grade crossing and nearly struck. I asked one of the crew if that happens often and he replied, “All the time.”
EDIT: This occurred years ago.
Interesting
I like the long skewed grade crossing in this video. Reminds me of the one located on the MBTA's 'Greenbush Line," a track that was dormant, until a decade or so ago.
(One of the towns was so opposed to the project that the tracks were depressed by a "cut and cover" tunnel nearby the depot.)
@@williamh.jarvis6795 interesting
This locomotive can turn a car into flat pancake in matter of seconds.
Doesn't this locality require railroad crossing arms to keep traffic from going over the tracks when a train is coming? It's like inviting people to play chicken with that train!
Can anyone tell me the maker of the whistle, the size, and the number of notes----she sounds beautiful!!!
Its a Ashton 6" three chime.
Thank You, do you by chance know the notes???@@therowdyexcavator
Noticed a few cars disregarded the lights even after the steam train cleared the crossing and warning lights were still on.
You know it’s been so long when those cars are impatient as heck
Pięknie daje sygnały dżwiekowe 👍👏
Glad you like them!
Parowozy mają swoją duszę i super klimat 😁
The Best on the whistle !! Its the way it should Be ! Great Job❤
no problem
Great catches and excellent video
Thanks
How cool is THAT??? Sounds so wonderful!
Agreed
Listen to that whistle-a- SINGING!

Glad to have you back, MRSR! Too bad I'm on the other side of the country now, I would've loved to take a ride or at least some video and photos. Did 70 get a new whistle? Sounds different from her other one.
I really don’t know
Love it. Thanks so much for posting.
you're welcome
That's one of the smallest Mikado's I've ever seen 🚂 certainly is a beautiful sight 🥰
It is indeed
It's the biggest engine built by Porter Locomotive works who normally built smaller industrial equipment and fireless engines
@@kakinokitsune4487Polson 70 is a Baldwin. Are you confusing the 70 with the 5, which happens to be one of the largest Porters ever built?
@@notarealname6347 I thought it looked. . .Baldwin-esque 🚂😀
It's about time they brought the steam locomotives back into service
yes it is
DON'T DELETE THIS FANTASTIC CZcams VIDEO ! 😃
I will never
I was up at Mt. Rainier visitor center and shop on 4 July 1976 when I was 7. It was snowing.
Whistle is magnificent.
Everything looked nicer those days…and what a joy with those sounds.-. Nothing has charm no more
I know, it has been 3 years tho
Reliving a past life. Awsome.
V E R Y F A N T A S T I C ! ! ! 💯👍😀
thanks
Thanks, Konlin, for posting this. This is such great news for those of us living in the Pacific Northwest! This is a very scenic line and, with a bit of promotion, should draw well.
Yes it should
there are some sights, sounds, smells that will take you back in time, right combination.
Steam, hot iron, hot oil, is one of those combinations.
for me, it’s forest smoke
glad you liked the video
Is that a Coal burning Locomotive polluting the state of Washington?...........I Love It!!!😂🥰🤩
to be honest, i have no clue what Polson Logging 70 burns lol
glad you like the video!
I love trains also thank you
no problem
Wow Super Whistle
glad to see this train back and isn't it interesting that even this little steamer can pull cars on her own, yet every time you see the Big Boy it has to have a stupid diesel pushing or pulling it around.....
Survival of the fittest is backwards in the train world lol
Best "NEW" CZcams Video In The Universe
thanks for the kind words, I try my best
The shot of the crossing is 👌
Thanks
Great video ,Greetings from Scotland 🏴❤🇺🇲

It will never be same without Jack Anderson and Harold Borovec.
Yeah
Still better than AHR

Que bacana. Lembranças do meu tempo de criança aqui no Brasil. Meus avós paternos e maternos, primos e tios, eram ferroviários ❤🎉😊
It’s not Brazil
Understand. But remember my parents in here…grandfather, uncles. Luke’s 😅❤Thanks
Powerful Amazing
YES!!!!! ITS BACK!!!!! IM SO GONNA RIDE THAT!!!!!!!!
It’s gonna be worth it, I rode the train in 2015, nice views too
My introduction to this line had being from a Vhs title AGE OF STEAM which was part of a Collection of 3 including Age of steam, The Flying Scotsman & Steam Alive ( AUS Steam 88)
neat
I got a plastic train model just like this one in my room! It's 2023 and you would think that steam engines for trains like this would be gone. But I'm glad someone is still using them today. And where exactly is this?
Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad, Elbe Washington
Totally awesome
thanks
Wow look at that
I can’t stop looking at it
Went on that trip when I was a kid. Went somewhere by mineral if I remember correctly.
Cool
Great whistle
I agree with you
Hey. We once had steam cars too!
Nice
Nice video work
thanks
The only thing missing is a beautiful old caboose.
Yep
What! I wish I had known, we were in Packwood last weekend.
Dang, hope you manage to get there if you can
Same here, thanks.
Great music with the whistle
Thanks
I wonder if this is the same train that used to run between Renton and St. Michelle's winery in Woodinville many years ago. Used to be the Washington Dinner Train. I know that the train moved down into that area. There was an old diesel locomotive that used to be with that line too.
not sure
Nope, entirely different train.
OH YEAH, the spirit of Washington dinner train! It’s a shame that train closed down, really nice looking f unit
Thanks👍
No problem
This is going to get a million views!!
@@TravelingSportsGuy it’s close, but you should have seen the video when it first dropped
Oh my gosh it was a lot to take in
Those American steam whistles sound so much better than the ones here in Germany.

Very nice

I haven't been on a train since I was 11 years old. Rode a train to go pick up acorns.
nice
Love to see a steam train with no ugle diesel behind it.

This is way to awesome to see these steam trains running anybody know how many persons can ride on just one of those train cars? I’d like to do that just going down the tracks sometimes real slow and easy
i have no idea, i dont ride trains anymore, but it was packed, probably a couple hundred people at the depot
no clue how many people can ride the train
Awesome Railfan Video 👍👍👍👍👍🚂
thanks
OMG, that's the Hogwarts Express!!!
You know, I kinda wonder what some random person just passing through town would think if they were stopped at a crossing, and all of a sudden a steam locomotive comes through...
I was thinking the same thing! It would be interesting
Nice video
Thanks
I have to commend whoever had the idea of putting 5s ashton on 70. She sounds better than she ever did with the Baldwin 3
@@EngineerDaylight I bet, it fits her perfectly
