Editor's Note:
The puppet tool in after effects allow shapes to be morphed and reshaped. Reshaping objects and text in after effects gives you the power to create all kinds of cool effects. The puppet tool is central for this. Therefore, How to use the puppet tool in after effects, and more generally, how to use the puppet tool, are some of the most wildly requested topics. Puppet tool tutorial videos are often lack luster, therefore in this adobe after effects puppet tool tutorial, we will cover all of the basics as well as show you how to use the puppet tool in after effects to morph shape layers and morph text in after effects.
Great showcase! I allready used puppet tool but I didn't really had an idea how powerful it can be. Maybe I should try it again.
Keep up the great work!
Thank you for the tutorial! You can actually reset the puppet tool if you want to finish the animation with initial shape. Just have to be on the frame you want and push "reset", next to puppet tool effect on your layer effects. So you don't have to worry about over-copying the initial shape keyframes or paste them to the first frame etc.
Man, you are the best!! Iâve been searching for a tutorial like this for more than 7 days! Thank you so much!!!
That last tip will come in handy. I'm rusty in AE and forgot about the pre-comp bit. Thanks!
Wow, thanks, that's the first time I saw this tool! Really usefull!
Super helpful, thanks Mobox
OMG I LOVE YOU, I'VE BEEN TRYING SO LONG THANK YOU
thank you very much for this tutorial!

I have great idea to use this tool in my project...its perfect
When the beat started, it kinda sounded like you were rapping.
Thanx a lot. I had these glitches and didn't know what to do. Pre-compose will help)

I love it so much really thanks
Thx, you saved my life and my project)
Nice tuts.
Thank you
Muy bueno el tutorial LIKE.
thank you so much
thank you! :)
Thanks but how do you free transform a shape (square or star) without a mask, just as you would do it in PS or Illustrator?
you can just creative a null layer and link the shape to the null and key the null instead. so that it makes lining up everything easier?
Thanks mate!
hey bro can u tell me that how u bring the twitter thing down "follow me on twitter" and the animation i wanna know that i'm curious. :/
Wow thanks!
Thanks for this tutorials......But What did you show in the preview, and what did show in tutorials? You did not show lessons how to do make like your preview
Might be what I need to get the results I want.
tutorial starts at 2:53
When he opened up the C, I immediately thought he was gonna make it eat something đ
When working with pin tools, and when I work with position. a mask is made up. And the pin does not go right
. what can i do?
How do you get rid of the black border when using the puppet tool?
Amazing stuff! But I have one quick question. I recently started using AE and I've been trying to figure out how to move the composition screen, the exact same way you did in the beginning of the tutorial. Time stamp @1:10. Hope to read back from you! I'm using Windows 10 as well. If anyone in the comments knows how to do this, please let me know. Thanks a bunch! And again, Amazing stuff!
works for cs4??
this toutorial is still useful after 8 yaers
how do you put the letters in different pieces??
you're saving me from failing two of my classes with your tutorials.. thank you
+Mike Ridolfi Do you take bitcoin?
dude you safe me thanks
thx
where can i sell this stuffs?
What if I want to add saber on puppet tool?
I can only place 1 pin and it moved the whole picture help
Hey Mike, great tutorial!
Just on question: To change position, wouldn't it be easier to create a null object and parent it to "C Outlines" than Pre-Composing it?
Thank you anyway!
+Carlos Vinicius The puppet tool does a very weird thing. When you set pins, they don't move with the object. Even if it is attached to a null object. I'm not sure if there is a way to prevent that, but yeah. That's why I pro-com it.
Oh, damn! :/
Ok, thank you for answering
MOBOX Graphics it's called duik
Here's something I animated with the Puppet Pin tool a couple years ago: vimeo.com/104147938
really cool
how do I do this to a certain body parts?
at 2:15 how did you show the shape points?
doesn't work, there is an invisible frame around the text
doesn't allow using pin tool because it deform the text ???
what is the type font?
Norwester
Wow
Not really essential to keep the initial keyframes and it's not hard, just right click and reset and the concerned effect.
Hi i have After Effects 7.0 but where is the puppet toll there! Please awnser thanks!
+Trouble Crafter Cant see why your surprised, that version of after effects came out roughly 10 years ago! If you really want to get in to motion graphics i suggest getting the Adobe Creative Cloud, its a 29.99 (or 19.99 with an .edu Email) monthly subscription that includes the latest of every adobe product.
Or....
I by no means endorse piracy, but if your tight on money there are other ways of obtaining software. Do so at your own risk.

Is helpful, but if you not good in explaining, then you can actually go straight to the point.
After Effects is truly the most discouraging editing tool of the Adobe Suite! Especially if you've familiarized yourself with Ps and you want to move on to Ae, none of the controls are the same. For example why not Ctrl+T to transform?! Why do I have to use the 'scale' and 'rotate'? It's aggravating
bloo jkl45 stop bitching like a little kid. AE is easy and you can literally transform any layer you have clicked on without going into its transform properties or even hitting ctrl+ T, because it always has a bounding box around it when you have something selected which can be used to manipulate scale, position or rotation. If you really think that it makes sense having 2 completely different software used for different things share all their shortcuts you are a damn fool. People using ps rarely transition to AE because its mostly used for different mediums, so grow up and learn the new program like everyone else.
Ahaha funnnyyyy
I think some steps are hidden I couldn't see there for example after creating shape from text I couldn't see the real C layer how you remove it. B4 that I am beginner in After effects. I think that is the reason I couldn't understand
