  • Paris welcomes over 30 million visitors each year. They marvel at Le Louvre, la Tour Eiffel, l’Arc de Triomphe… but there’s ONE thing they don’t marvel at, for sure--the arrival and departure at the Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport. The way Paris welcomes its visitors is a shame on France. I'll help.

    I have been to and from Charles de Gaulle airport several times, taking taxi, rer, and another option, SUPER SHUTTLE. It is a private shuttle service that will leave you in front of your hotel or apartment rental and pick you up from there to. I liked it because it is cheaper than a taxi ( around 25 euros each way Nov 2014) since its a shared ride. They even take you to suburbs which was good for me since I stayed in Vincennes. Also I had two bags plus carry on on this trip so it would have been to much for me to carry on RER. Also too far from opera for me I would have had to take a taxi fron there. Two downsides to be aware of though, it can be a long ride so be aware of time. Going to the airport though they will ask for your flight time. And when you get picked up from airport you have to call them, but there is a pay phone in the terminal and a toll free number from what i recall. But overall for me this service was worth it.

    Our two sons and I met my husband in Paris two weeks ago. Not feeling up to lugging all our bags onto and off of the RER in our jetlagged state and walking the rest of the way to our rental apartment, we booked a van ride with Shuttle Inter, and it may be the best 55 euros we spent the whole trip. When we stumbled through the sortie at Charles de Gaulle after 48 hours of traveling (our first attempt turned around mid-flight to deal with mechanical problems, costing us a day of our vacation), the driver was waiting there for us with our name on a placard -- a welcome sight indeed! This service is private (i.e., it's just you; you don't have to wait on or trawl for other passengers), and you only pay after they deliver you to your destination (a lot of them make you prepay, and if you fail to meet up with them, you're out of luck). Just thought I'd mention it as another viable option.

    Okay, I flew into Paris today through CDG and I'd add a couple of things. First, the ticket machines for the RER did not work with my American credit cards, even though they had the chip and pin. The machines only accepted cards and coins, which I didn't have, so I ended up having to wait in line to buy a ticket from the cashier, which wasn't terrible but it took a while. I also got a lot of dirty looks on the RER because I was traveling with a large suitcase (I'm going to be in France for almost 8 months). I just about panicked when I realized I had to get out of the RER station through a turnstile. I actually think it would have been impossible with my bag if a very, very nice Parisian hadn't helped from the other side. So maybe the RER isn't the best bet if you have a very large suitcase.

    I was staying near the Olympia théâtre after a concert and the next day had a flight , I actually found it easier to take the roissy bus at opera I had two big luggages and it's a lot safer because I can see my bags at all times and a hour ride wasn't that bad, it was pain free, also I never really had good experiences with RER, but I do love the metro.
    Thanks for this video

    When I went to Paris in January 2020 I had an easy time getting into Paris from CDG, using the RER B.
    The trip back to CDG was where I had trouble. I got on the RER from Gare Du Nord and because I took the Metro there from my hotel I was already in the train station and completely forgot to get a RER ticket but I was still able to get on the train. When I arrived at CDG I was notified that I had the wrong ticket by the Security or Police and I had to pay a fine of 30 Euros. Not terrible but that was 20 less Euros for my next stop in Berlin. Lesson-learned :)

    Nice video! I like CDG airport. I usually take the RER B to Gare du Nord and find it very convenient. Additional tip: There is an RER that rides directly between the two stations and another one that stop on several stations in between. I always try to catch the direct line that takes only about 30min.
    Once I traveled from Paris to Palermo and had to take a flight from Beauvais. That was embarrassing...
    BTW, to confuse even more: There is a bus from Charles de Gaulle Airport to Charles de Gaulle Étoile by Air France. ;)

    Special note: You should mention that the RER and the subway (Metro) networks are interconnected. Once you have the ticket from the airport to paris, you can connect to the Metro network and continues up to any subway station without the need to buy a second ticket.

    You obviously haven't flown in or out of Melbourne airport Australia. That is embarrassing.
    My wife and I made our first trip to Paris last year. After a 25 hour flight and fist time to Paris we caught a taxi and at around EU $50 we felt it was quite ok.
    For our return we caught the RER B and it could not have been easier.
    My son and I are returning soon and we plan to RER B both ways.
    Your advice as always is fantastic.

    If you're travelling in Europe I would recommend to visit Paris by train. There are quite good and fast train connections from London, Bruxelles or Zurich. It might look like planes are a much faster mode of transport, but believe me trains are often much faster if you take in account the way from the airport to the city. Arriving by train you're normally already close to the city center.

    • @inglewoodea3149
      @inglewoodea3149 Před 6 lety

      Tobias Wasauchimmer train are faster, but a plane makes 35 to leave from CDG the west coast of france and the way to paris from CDG by train is about 10 minutes (direct line) or 25 minutes with the regular train. In a car it takes 5 hours from paris to french west coast and for a high speed train it's about 2.30 hours (i experienced it) so PLANES are much more faster

    Hello Geraldine our big mistake was that we did not know there would be more than one hotel of the same name at the airport. We drove to what we thought was the hotel we had booked only to find there were several of the same "brand" in separate villages around the airport. This was about ten years ago. I wonder if it is still the same. Luckily we were able to back our luggage back into the car and drive on to the correct hotel.
    All the very best wishes

    Salut Geraldine et merci beaucoup pour ta bonne video, et pour tes conseils. Je suis en accord avec tous. Pour moi, la mode préférée de CDG a Paris est vraiment le RER B. En 2011 et 2012, j'ai fait 5 departs (et arrivées) de/a CDG et sauf pour la premiere fois quand j'ai pris l'autobus a l'Opera, tous les autres sont avec le train. Facile et pratique. Je débarquais a Denfert Rochereau, près de l'appartement de mon séjour et voila ! Merci aussi pour cette opportunité de pratiquer mon français. Je pense que je le parle mieux que je l'écrire :)

    Be sure to arrive at CDG HOURS ahead of your flight - I would suggest at least 3 hours. I arrived once about 2-1/2 hours ahead of time and almost missed my flight. There are so many lines to stand in and they all move SO slowly. Going through customs there was one lane open and there was an enormous line. Then security again at your gate. It is really the slowest experience in an airport I've ever had. (And I fly in and out of O'Hare all the time which is the 4th or 5th busiest airport in the world, but it's very efficient.)

    This video brought up some bad memories. About 14 years ago I arrived in Paris by train and I took the RER B to get my friend at CDG. Everything was fine until we tried to take the RER again to go back to Paris because it shut down! We panicked because we had a train to catch and there wasn't much time. Then I believe an RER bus got us but it was PACKED. Miserable hour long bus ride. And to top it off, someone tried to pick my pocket on the bus!

    I went into Paris by taxi from CDG because it was paid for by my study abroad affiliate, but on the way back I took RER B to the airport. I saw other comments about how it was harder with large suitcases. For me it was awkward, yes. Thankfully, no one else needed my seat as all the older people/women had seats. Compared to Texas, which is the same size as France, I will say France has a way better public transportation system. The same can be said when comparing France to the U.S. in that regard. The SNCF is like Amtrak if Amtrak had a broader reach from what I’ve seen.

    Bonjour and Hello everyone. I never had a problem with any of the airports and the people working there were friendly and taxi service is right outside. Make sure you take a real taxi and not some guy without a licence. From Charles de Gaulle it's about 45 Euros and less than hour depending upon traffic. I would recommend getting off at Orly Airport, about 35 Euros to Paris and it's much closer. Also take the taxi driver's business card because they will pick you up if you call them when you'r in Paris and if they're around.
    I wouldn't take a bus or a train just that's just me--who wants to lug around luggage etc.... TIP -- when you are in Paris and you can't find a taxi you can call a service but they don't speak English. Just ask one of the friendly Parisians to call on your behalf.
    As far as the lovely lady giving us advice about Paris's airports.... Psstttt I think the people at the airport don't like Parisians LOL ;p But here's a Teddy Bear for you -)
    Love and kisses from New York -)

    Bonjour, Geraldine. J'aime bcp votre programme! Voilà ci-dessous mon expérience.
    There is another option, i.e. the shuttle buses "les cars" operated by Air France (en.lescarsairfrance.com/). Four lines between different locations, such as CDG, Orly Airport, Gare de Lyon, Gare de Montparnasse, Champs-Élysées and so on. It costs 12.5 ~ 21 euro per one way, more expensive than RER B and Roissy bus. The tickets are sold on board and from machines.
    From my own experience, it is esp favorable to exhausted visitors who need to travel between airports and railway stations with heavy luggage.

  • @vidyagopal09
    @vidyagopal09 Před 6 lety

    People who fly in and out of CDG, please be aware of mammoth queues at immigration. Its total chaos. There will be only two lines open for 500 or more people. The lines go here and there and no one can find out the end of the line. There was a video circulating in WA, on a bad immigration day, it was so chaotic, one woman fainted, the staff just lifted her and dropped her in a corner, did not even attend to her, many people escaped through exits without doing immigration, till they got more people to man the exits. So if you are getting out in CDG and planning a train ride to countryside, plan with a timegap. Its not this bad if you are transitting though. But agreed that CDG is the most chaotic airport in Europe.

      siddharth b I’ve never had a pleasant experience in CDG Airport and it’s amazing how rude people behind the check counter can be. It makes me appreciate the US. I’ve been to other countries that have crappy service or just barely functioning operation, but you’d expect more from France or any so called first world country. But it true that Europeans, more so the French, don’t feel they need to hide their discrimination against other people, and they’re often just rude because they have certain expectations from people that come to their country, even when you’re the one giving them business and therefore a job. But I have friends and family who are French, and I only have to deal with the airport losers.
