@@AliasMorris In F1, it's almost always the car with a combination of talent that wins championships. JV may not have been as talented as The Michael, but it takes some actual talent to win a championship at the highest level in open wheel cars. Villeneuve was just too stupid to get away from Craig Pollock who pretty much destroyed Villeneuve's career with him going to teams that literally fielded crap cars throughout the rest of his career. Considering he's also won the Indy 500 along with his F1 World Championship, JV was a talented driver that much like Alonso, had an attitude and made poor career choices that robbed him of possibly more world titles. Didn't help that Adrian Newey left Williams, went to McLaren and boom, Mika wins back to back world titles. Such is life, JV made the wrong mistakes after 1997 but he was a talented driver none the less.

I think his father Gilles Villeneuve was a far more naturally talented driver. His downfall was over aggression which lead to his death. Jacques was blessed with that aggression , but in a far more tempered way. He used it to win a lot of races. Being Canadian I am a little biased. He is our only World Champion and our only Indy 500 winner And that is something all Canadians are proud of.

Jochen Mass should and could have more room instead of driving in the middle while Gilleswas approaching and as such forcing him to choose (the excuse that Gilles could never pass on the outside was refuted several times ..he did miracles)....and only make room when Gilles was already aside him....Fortunately not possible anymore in todays racing. Gilles drove in far less cars with awkward handling. 1981 proved his real capability. For me, Gilles is the greatest driver that ever lived but also displayed values, which I appreciate in life. Villeneuve junior was definitely very good & quick in his own right, no one's denying that. Not sure what the bad choice which cost him was though, unless you mean the big pay cheque move to BAR in '99. It would have been interesting had he stayed at Williams through their 98-99 slump, because things got going again in 2000, and really came pretty good in the next few years before dropping off once more.

I seem to remember back then that apparently, Frank Williams had asked Ron Dennis before the race to keep the McLaren drivers out of the battle as their car was proving to be extremely quick at the end of the season and so he didn't want Hakkinen or Coulthard to be an additional distraction. Then when Villeneuve's car was clearly struggling after Schumacher's collision, Ron Dennis then bargained with Frank Williiams to let the McLarens go by as he had kept to their original agreement of not getting involved. Dennis of course wanted Hakkinen to score his maiden win which would prove to be the catalyst for a remarkable next few seasons for the Finn who in my opinion when he was really on it, was probably the quickest 1-lap driver that we had seen up until Hamilton arrived on the scene.

    • @MrRodzilla
      @MrRodzilla Před 4 lety +30

no you have it all wrong, villeneuves plan in the previous race was to hold up Schumacher and let all the other drivers pass him so Schumacher would be out of the points and he would limit the damage, but for some reason hakkinen couldn't get passed Schumacher, Villeneuve asked him about it and the McLaren drivers said why didn't he let them know before the race
so McLaren decided to help Williams win the title at the jerez race, frentzen was fueled up more and told to back off so that when Schumacher pitted frentzen would be positioned just ahead of him then he could back up Schumacher into Villeneuve
that plan worked and frentzen was holding up hakkinen all this time, then Schumacher was behind them then couthard and Villeneuve catching them all
this was the time for McLaren to make their stops and it was originally intended for hakkinen to come in, and it made perfect sense for them to do so at that moment because they knew what frentzen was doing and he would be easily leapfrogged in the pitstops but because McLaren were helping Williams they decided to switch it to coulthard so they could get out of the way of Villeneuve while continuing to help hold up Schumacher
so coulthard pitted and had a free lap in clean air while hakkinen was locked up behind frentzen still driving slowly, that's how coulthard got ahead of hakkinen and why McLaren thought it was unfair to mika so they switched it back around later
after the crash the Williams was feeling unusual so Villeneuve wanted to limp home to the finish but Irvine was a danger in 4th place, so Williams called McLaren who agreed to drop their pace completely to escort Villeneuve to the end of the race, if they kept their pace they would take the lead 10 laps before the finish, even shinji nakano was faster than them at this point
so in the closing stages mika is going to take the win while coulthard is going to stay back and protect, but berger passes Irvine so coulthard accelerates and takes 2nd place, while berger is the only driver who is not driving slowly or doesn't have a problem, he makes up 5 seconds on the last lap
sorry for writing so long but I wanted to get all the details out because nobody else seems to know what really happened

    • @MrRodzilla
      @MrRodzilla Před 3 lety +16

@@bojandolinar1535 I pieced it together myself with all the details
      1) brundle told the viewers about the Villeneuve conversation with McLaren drivers during the race
      2) the frentzen strategy was obvious, he backed off to position himself ahead of Schumacher after the stops and held him up
      3) the McLaren team switched the drivers around later in the race because they compromised hakkinen by choosing to bring in coulthard, McLaren not pitting earlier is clear indication that they weren't interested in the best result for the team
      4) James allen reported in commentary that Patrick Head and Mansour Ojjeh were going into the others garages through the race even before the collision, and they were having another meeting as the race order is 1. Villeneuve 2. Coulthard 3. Hakkinen 4. Irvine
      5) The McLaren drivers definitely slow up for the last third of the race, Shinji Nakano unlapped himself from Villeneuve and drove away, the McLaren drivers were slowly closing up but they were stuck behind a lapped Jordan for over 10 laps
      6) The last lap is crazy and should be watched again, they have a video of it on youtube, Villeneuve lets both drivers through, coulthard slows back up again on the finish line, he later explained that he wanted to make sure Villeneuve got to the finish and would let him back through if not, berger was driving that lap as if it was his last in F1 because he passes Irvine, makes up a few seconds and almost passes Coulthard and Villeneuve on the finish line
      7) it was clearly a case of race fixing, so they investigated and found the team radio explaining to Villeneuve that hakkinen had been helping through the race so he should be let through to win the race and was reminded again on the last lap
from the transcript Clear (to Villeneuve): Keep concentrating, Jacques. Keep concentrating. (Pause) Hakkinen up to position two. 26.5 seconds Villeneuve. (Greater urgency) Hakkinen quite quick and very helpful. (Later) Be aware that Hakkinen is now in position two. He probably wants to win. Very helpful. (Later) DC [David Coulthard] is controlling [Eddie] Irvine. Hakkinen immediately behind you, Jacques. Immediately behind you, Hakkinen.
(Later) Keep concentrating, Jacques. Hakkinen is immediately behind. Last lap. Last lap. (Extremely nervous) Hakkinen has been very helpful. Jacques, position two. Don’t let me down, Jacques. We discussed this . . .

He was at his best in 1999 and 2000 with a very average car and did amazing stuff with it. After that it went down with how the cars changed and increased electronics etc. and he never adjusted so well I think. And with the quali system they had with only 1 lap and fuel they had to start the race with, he was pretty much always carrying more fuel than his teammates so he didn't look very good on quali (where he always had been very good at on different format and on light cars) and people started to shit on him. The 1997 season was incredibly fascinating. The Williams car was the best but through mechanical issues and retiring through accidents they left the door open for Ferrari and Michael Schumacher and the championship ended up going to the final race in Jerez.
The incident where Schumacher turned in on Jacques Villeneuve remains a black spot on his otherwise glittering career, with the 1994 Adelaide, 2006 Monaco and 2010 Hungaroring incidents in particular also blotting him.
It's hard to tell if he had a pre-determined mindset to try and take Villeneuve out but it happened on instinct anyway when Villeneuve suddenly dived down the inside at the hairpin. You can see that Schumacher goes to turn into the corner, straightens when Villeneuve appears and then turns in again in an instinctive move to try and take him out.
It failed to work and I can remember Martin Brundle even commentating at the time that he'd hit the wrong part of Villeneuve's car. To explain his mindset, Schumacher first began racing in the early 90s when the likes of Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and the late Aryton Senna were the kings of the sport. In 1990 with the championship on the line, Senna deliberately took Prost out at the first corner of the final race at Suzuka to take the title.
So Schumacher thought that if it was OK for Senna to deliberately take an opponent out to win that he could do it too. The problem was that after the dark weekend at Imola in 1994 where Senna and Roland Ratzenberger tragically died in separate accidents, the safety of the sport had come into serious question and it no longer became acceptable to use the cars as kamikaze weapons like Senna had done to Prost in 1990. Schumacher failed to pick up on this with the incidents that decided the 1994 and 1997 championships, although he got away with it in 1994 and was disqualified from the championship in 1997.

I believe Villeuneuve was a really great driver. People don't pay enough attention at his post Williams career. He did some amazing drives between 1998-2001 in terrible cars. I will never forget some epic performances with that 1999's BAR - Supertec which was the worst car of the grid (along with the MInardi). In the Spanish GP he was running 3rd in front of the Ferraris for half the race before the car gave up. In Imola the same year he qualified 5th in front of cars with much better engine, a fantastic performance, 2 seconds faster than his teammate Mika Salo (Salo a few months later in German GP replaced the injured Schumacher in Ferrari and was faster than Irvine but had to let Irvine win).
Later, in his downfall he was critisised that despite his huge salary didn't do a better job than his teammates Heidfeld and Massa but if you think about it he did against them better than Raikkonen did when he faced them as teammates and he wasn't past his prime like Villeneuve was.

Don't forget until 2000-2001, Jacques was considered as good as the best ones like Hakkinen (Schumacher was at a another class of course). In 2000 he even was the hottest driver at the moment, the main focus for the silly season. For my money, 2000 was his best year.
But the drama about Jacques is we will never know what was his real level. He was still inexperienced for his world title so not at his best and when his BAR experience began to fall apart (when they fired his boss-manager Craig Pollock at the end of 2001) it was the beginning of the end with Jacques not as motivated, mostly because the team (David Richards in fact) didn't want him at all. Try to do your best when your team want you to leave... Same applies for his 2006 year with BMW.
So how good was Villeneuve we will never know. But at one point, he was really well considered. Unfortunately the turn his career took and his (un)famous unspoken persona made his a black sheep in F1 for many...

Fansen Caesar The dog of a Williams in 1998 is not due to Jacques. He outqualified HHF 11-5 in 1998 and even in poor 2000 Jordan Harald was a qualifying machine. It took 2 very fast drivers in Button and Kubica to outperform JV when he was older. The 98 Williams was very slow so Jacques gambled on low downforce at power tracks. At Monza he qualified 2nd to HHFs 12th. However, he spun out. BAR developed from a terrible car in 99 to mediocre in 2000. At some point it's on the engineers as in the decline of Sennas McLaren from 1988-93. The Schumacher Irvine season of 1996 was very similar to Senna Andretti season in 1993. The great champions could still get good if diminished results from the car but merely very good open wheel racers were lost in those cars.

A severe punishment because of what he did three years earlier at Benetton when he deliberately rammed Hill in the final race of the season. He was not punished for that thus allowing him to win the title. There was also suspicion all season that Benetton were running illegally hacked traction control software which was discovered by the FIA but inexplicably they didn't punish the team boss Flavio Briatore who would later be c caught cheating and banned from F1 for life.

Benetton jerked them around for months until they finally handed their car over. Traction control was found hidden in the computer, along with launch control, and both could be turned on by the driver. Unlike the Williams, it still had the module that made it worked. They proved that when you finish the procedure, traction control was activated on the car. Plus they had a illegal fuel filter which also helped him take the lead at Brazil. So do you really believe they didn’t use it? Just look at the start in France.

@@ilanbar8612 No. You've got it all wrong.
Schumi flat out cheated, and was caught cheating multiple times, yet was never punished for it.
Senna was punished unfairly in 89 by the FIA and then did what he did in 90 as revenge.
Senna was no angel and was ruthless as well, but there was no doubt that Senna's action was much more justifiable than Schumi's. Saying both were equally bad is too black-and-white.

Wow this is a great insight into the 97 season. It's almost like the dark season, people tend to forget it. I started watching F1 proper a year later at around the time I turned 14.

The funny thing? Fontana was fired, even when he accepted that, since then, he has been racing in touring cars in Argentina
And he always says how bad he had feeling about that, and how sauber betrayed him besides he obey

This still happens today with both Mercedes and Ferrari and the smaller teams like Force India and Sauber who use their engines. We see it occassionally during blue flag periods
