Sunday Gravy, Italian Recipe - Gianni's North Beach

- Italian Sunday gravy is the traditional, long-cooked pasta sauce from a small village in Campania. It has long braised meats galore like pork braciola, beef braciola, meatballs and sausage. It's a classic of the slow food movement since you really want to take your time making this one. But the good news is that while it's a lot of time, it's not a lot of work. You basically make the sauce, brown the meat and then let everything simmer together for several hours. It's the perfect dish to make on a lazy Sunday afternoon sipping wine with friends.
You have to make this one next Sunday!

Gianni, where are you? I look for you from time to time. I miss your videos!
I was born and raised in northern New Jersey and lived on the east coast until moving to North Beach over 20 years ago. I guess I've never lost my Jersey/Rhode Island accents.
Dang, you are GOOD! Grew up in an Italian restaurant family with a father who cooked for the Rat Pack. You hit everything right on and your knowledge of the many regional Italian variations is more than impressive. And your sass tops it all off. So approachable. Intelligent. Fresh. Easy to understand. Perfecto.
Please, please, grate your own parmigiano or pecorino. You'll really see the difference the real stuff makes in your dish.
This meal is a lot of work and shows how much u love the people u make it for.
This guy is a character and a half. A great throwback to more thoughtful people. He does a real good job showing you how it's done and what it means to Italians. That plate looks amazing.
Bill Burr mentioned this recipe on his podcast, what a recommendation. Thanks for sharing your recipe Gianni
Hey Gianni, We live in Sausalito...When the wind is blowing in the right direction, I swear I can smell the gravy cooking in your flat. You are legend :,,,🙏👌😎
beautiful! that is a long lost art. even in italy, no one cooks like this anymore. this makes me remember my youth when all the italians in my city hung out together and did stuff like this. there was not much to like there was today , so my parents and their friends cooked and made meals like this. it was always festive and there was always food to eat. we seem to have lost so much so I try making nice sugos like this and give it friends and family and make them remember the good days that our parents taught us.
Im Asian and have always loved the flavours and spices you get off from Italian cuisine, it's an overwhelming wholesome, home like feeling. I wish I knew more about Italian food so I can create authentic Italian flavours myself.
Absolutely fantastic! You remind me of my father, God rest his soul. Cooking was his gift. Watching you in this video was like watching him, all those years ago in the kitchen. He learned all his recipes from his Grandmother, and I used to watch him cook. It was an art form you seldom see these days. Thank you!!! At last, I've found it again! Ciao!
I live in Idaho and we don’t have anything like this. So grateful for CZcams...I’ve made homemade sauce with my own homegrown basil and Roma tomatoes, making delicious dishes like yours, I’ve made enchilada sauce, chile verde...seriously, the world is at my fingertips! These Italian dishes really make my family happy! I’ve subscribed and hit the 🔔 🥰🍝
"don't use that stuff in the cardboard carton, I'll kill ya!!!"....laughed so hard....I.m subscribing.
That got me too! I subscribed.
Spoken like a true Italian!
He's so right
That looks fabulous. The history of your family went into those pots, I think Mama would be proud of her Gianni. Grazie
im gonna go get the papers get the papers!
OMG, Gianni, this was the best Italian gravy I've ever made. I am of German decent but I love Italian cuisine. It is very apparent that you are a retired professional chef and you explain everything so well in your videos. Danke!!!
Ciao Dale. No I'm just a passionate home cook. Keep on cooking. Buon appetito!
If you don't get heartburn after eating this dish there's something missing from the recipe. Simply Delicious boy do I miss the Italian restaurants in New Jersey the finest in the country.
I'm originally not far from San Francisco and used to take the bus (too young to drive yet) and then walk to Fisherman's Wharf for sourdough bread, fight off the sea gulls and enjoy the view of the bridge. When I was old enough to drive, I had a job at a small restaurant on the Embarcadero called "The Captain's Table", later married and moved to TN. I was told to always keep my memories, because it has changed so much. I've looked at the pictures you've shown with your video several times and got a bit home sick. Thank you for your video.
Your's got to be the best presentation I have seen Gianni!!! Bravo!
Happy to have you discovered!
Beautiful job,it’s about time we see someone who can make a real gravy
Folks that’s how it’s done
I've just found you !! So excited. My mom was born & raised in Chicago. Her best friend was & is Italian and they would come to visit us in Kentucky . They would bring Italian sausages in an ice chest bc it was 60 yrs ago. Kids galore so the gravy pot was huge !! So...mom is 91 now & I needed some more tips so I can make the gravy. I learned a lot today , so THANK YOU !!
Ciao Rosetta. I remember those ice chests. What fun. God bless your Mom. Let me know how your gravy turned out.

Always such a pleasure to watch your recipes & your personality, Gianni! Please continue with the new ones!
This is one of the best videos on CZcams.
Gianni thank you for sharing. You brought back memories of my ma. As I watched you work right away I realized Gianni can really cook. We are 5 brothers (just 4 of us left). We visit whenever we can between the bay area and Chicago. I'm the one who cooks. Ma used to say, one of you has to learn...
So I was paying close attention and cheese'n it from ear to ear because of all the fond memories all the way through the recording and when you got emotional at the end... I may have started a half second before you...
Again Thank You,
Jesse
Passion + history+love , = perfection You have it all.
My idol Ms. GIANNI ! I almost cried for bringing back family's memories 😎👍

Thank you, Gianni, for sharing your family recipes and memories. I admire your respect & love you have for your mother. I'm in NJ. Just hope someday soon I'll feel well enough to make your gravy & meatballs. The sandwiches next day sound delicious! 😊please do more videos soon. Joanie from NJ
Beautiful recipe presented with charm.
Gianni, beyond amazing. Grazie!
Ahhhhh! Sunday Gravy! Just like momma used to make, only she removed the all the meats except the sausages and sent them in my Papa's lunchbox on monday, it must have really brightened his Monday having them for lunch!
You are the man, your mom and aunty are the lady’s!!!!! Awesome man.
Thanks Gianni! It brings a tear to my eye remembering my fathers stories of his life growing up in Newark. He made a great Spaghetti sause. He had a routine, and it was the same all the time. He always made a lot because there were seven kids.
Thanks for sharing this recipe Gianni!! Cant wait to try it!
Beautiful. Immensely enjoyed watching this...I'm gonna have to try this❤

Glad the recipe worked for you. Thanks for letting me know. Keep on cooking.
Great show. Loved it
Bravo Gianni!!! The best video of an Italian American classic. The aromas coming through the screen!!! Forget about it. Your killing me!!! Trading all your tomorrows for a single yesterday. The memories, oh the memories carried by those aromas. Thanks for the memories paisano. Just don't watch this when you're on a diet like me. My doctor needs to see this. The Jedi mind trick, "you don't need to be on a diet, let's go get some Italian food."
Many thanks for taking the time to share your wisdom
God bless you, Gianni!
Fantastic presentation. I live alone now, so to much for me, but i do love to cook and eat. So just watching and listening to you, is a Joy!!
Beautiful cooking, love it, gave me some great instructions, to some food for the fall and winter, thank you sooo much, God bless you...
I live in WA State, and we have very few Italian places here. However, I lived in Denver for awhile, and my eyes were completely opened to Italian food. The sausage is what I remember. Buon Apetito!
Simply Amazing!
Gianni, Truly enjoyed watching you cook. I make mine the same as yourself. I chop all the veggies so that I don't remove except for the bay leaf. After 3 hrs of cooking you can't find anything but the bay leaf! I'm fond of garlic so I use a bit more than you do.Love seeing you cook. Both my parents were born in Italy and cooking was a very important part of daily life. Thanks and God Bless you.
Ciao Josie. Thanks for sharing your technique. Sometimes I chop vegetables or turn them into a paste in a food processor then saute them in olive oil before adding the tomatoes. Any of these methods impart the flavor of the vegetables into the sauce or even a soup base. Yes, remember to remove the bay leaf! Keep on cooking.

Outstanding. Proprio come la mia mamma e la nonna usato per fare. I used to peel and chopped the veggies and they would let me eat some of the raisins. Great memories. Molte grazie!

Well done Chef. I remember growing up in our semi-poor neighborhood and the Italian families would feed all us kids Sunday gravy. They kept the meat for family so we got pasta, gravy, bread and a glass of Kool-Aid. It was wonderful!
I love this. Feels like home.
Love the passion.
