  • Hi this video explains about the Exhaust gas recirculation system, watch the entire video and lean it
    This is a technology employed on engines to reduce the amount of harmful nitrogen oxides been pumped out from the exhaust of an engine. As the pollution norms are strict in many parts of the world such new initiatives will be seen in future also to protect our environment.
    Exhaust gas recirculation system is a nitrogen oxide reduction technique used in petrol and Diesel engines. This works by recirculation a portion of the engine exhaust gas back to the engine cylinder.
    Before going into exhaust gas re-circulation system let's learn about some basics of these oxides and how they are formed.
    O2 or oxygen - two oxygen atoms are required to create oxygen.
    N2 or nitrogen - two nitrogen atoms are required to create nitrogen.
    NO or oxide of nitrogen - one nitrogen atom and one oxygen atom is required to create oxide of nitrogen.
    NO2 or nitrous oxide - one nitrogen atom and two oxygen atoms are required to create nitrous oxide.
    NOx or oxides of nitrogen - one nitrogen atom and three or more oxygen atoms are required to make oxides of nitrogen. ( “x” stands for unknown number of oxygen atoms )
    CO or carbon monoxide - one carbon atom and one oxygen atom creates carbon monoxide.
    CO2 or carbon dioxide - one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms.
    EGR works by diluting the nitrogen with the inert gas carbon dioxide, to act as an absorbent of combustion heat to reduce high cylinder temperature. At a very high temperature only NOx is produced. So what EGR does is - it reduces the temperature by reducing the chance of NOx been created (but this heat reduction will definitely affect the engine efficiency) almost all the new generation engines used EGR to meet the emission standards.
    EGR valve opens up when it get a back pressures from the engine exhaust and channels it back to the combustion chamber.The exhaust gas is channeled back to the engine cylinder because it's is much hotter than intake air.
    As mentioned above NOx is created at very higher temperature, as the exhaust gas get mixes up with the intake air, as the percentage of oxygen in the mixture reduces. This will reduce the combustion ability and results the fuel to burn at lower temperature.
    In some EGR system it will employ a cooler before the exhaust getting mixed with the inlet gas. So the fuel mixed with exhaust burns cooler and the chances of NOx production reduce.
    Other than NOx reduction EGR is also used to:
    1. To impart the knock resistance and reduce the need of high load fuel enrichment in SI engines.
    2. Improving the ignition quality of difficult to ignite fuels in Diesel engines.

    The main point to highlight here is that the O2 (from air inlet) is replaced/diluted with CO2 (from exhaust gas). CO2 has a higher heat capacity than O2 which therefore reduces peak temperatures in the cylinder. Cooling the exhaust gas does help reduce the overall reduction in combustion temperature but the main principle is the introduction of CO2.

    Once the EGR start working, the intake air will contains normal air (O2+N2) and NOx as cooled air. What will happen to this NOx after combustion? Because we do this to reduce the NOx emission but the intake air itself contain the NOx.

    • @sahibsingh2556
      @sahibsingh2556 Před 8 lety +2

      +richard michaud pretty simple if you talk about figuring out this thing. Basically Nox gases occur at very high temperatures (approx 2500 degree C) i.e. combustion temp , this is the threshold temp for the prod of Nox gases , hence the idea of lowering down that peak temp is what form the only basis to reduce nox. there is no rocket science.

    Egr is generally used in GDI engines (and air assisted fuel injection) rgt where we can attain high compressing ratio due to efficient cooling of cylinder by absorbing latent heat by fuel. (Where temp rise during combustion will be very high due to which large possibilty of NOx emissions as well as the stratified mixture create which will also accelerate NOx emissions)
    So this exhaust gas will reduce the temperature during ignition time only rgt as engine is already at normal condition .so how come it helps in reducing knocking .
    Or if it cool the engine further at initial condition there may be chances of over cooling of engine rgt so how will you account for tat .
    Just a doubt may be foolishness.please clarify my doubt

  • @hemanthnekkanti3450
    @hemanthnekkanti3450 Před 6 lety

    cooled no2 and co2 won't cool the engine it just replaces some part of oxygen and nitrogen and dilute the fresh charge since oxygen is less fuel air mixture will ignite slowly hence reducing engine peak temperature their by reducing nitrous oxide emissions since oxygen and nitrogen combines at higher temperature and also exhaust gas does not support any combustion since exhaust gas is mixed with cold air intake that is fresh charge which will increases inlet temperature and hence density of fresh charge will drops hence performance is also drops so thats why we need to cool exhaust gas before diluting into fresh charge and cooled exhaust don't cool the engine as you mentioned in this video don't mislead the people.

We need some kinda mechanism ( here, a coolant system , like a radiator) to lower down the temp of exhaust gases so that they can be used again. simple !

    EGR is a joke for the environment! Don't get me wrong, it does reduce nox once it leaves from the pipe, but like myself, I'm a truck driver, And in the real world, egr engines push more nox than a none Egr engine, egr engine will have to inject more fuel (due to lack oxygen)to get the same power than a none egr engine example : let have two trucks with Detroit engine 60 series, one has egr and the other does not, both trucks(bobtail, similar weight) travel 500 miles,
    The none egr truck will do above 10 mpg(I experienced it myself)
    While the egr truck will do 6.8mpg or less, so this truck wasted more fuel, and more fuel=more exhaust.
    So the question is... did the truck with egr really reduce nox during the 500 miles?
    PS: the none egr used 50 gallons desiel
    And the egr truck 73.52 gallons, that's 23.52 more desiel than the none egr at 500 miles.

    • @SpencerHHO
      @SpencerHHO Před 9 lety +2

      Fuel consumption has almost nothing to do with NOX. NOX is formed when oxygen and nitrogen are heated beyond a certain temperature. By reducing the peak combustion temperature inside the cylinder that temperature is either not reached or isn't reached for as long reducing the formation of NOX.
      EGR diesels do consume more fuel, are less efficient, are less powerful and produce slightly more soot and carbon dioxide BUT they do emit less NOX.
      You realise that when they test this stuff they do run the engines too right?
      You're experience with MPG has pretty much zero relevance to NOX emissions. If the EGR diesel is doing that much worse I would suspect that there may be a problem. When I blanked the EGR on my diesel the fuel economy didn't improve by 32% more like 10%. How old are these trucks, is the egr Computer controlled or is it a dumb system?

      Leviticus Rodriguez with respect....
      by taking out catalytic conver we can save fuel too but think about environment ,u burn millions of gallons no one cares unless no harmful gases are in exhaust.
      without EGR
      more fuel =more exhaust with more harmful gases
      with EGR
      more fuel =more exhaust but with less harmful gases
      give cleaner environment to your kids and all of us so we all can breathe .

      Zia Din I'm sorry to desagree, no egr= better fuel saving
      Egr=very bad fuel milage
      I should know, my wife and I been on the road for so many years driving are own trucks

      Leviticus Rodriguez You miss the point.
      We agree that EGR does reduce your mileage! It absolutely increases your fuel consumption! We agree with that.
      What EGR does and why it was mandated was too reduce NOX emissions to reduce acid rain and the like.
      As Zia said if you remove the catalytic converter you also improve fuel economy, that doesn't mean that you should though as it means that the exhaust gases are more toxic. It isn't just about CO2 and fuel economy.

      +Leviticus Rodriguez the more I think about the silliness of the EGR system the more I think it must have been desing by the oil industry !!!!!!!!

    NOx doesn't produce with the reaction of atmospheric nitrogen, it forms due to the presence of nitrogen in the fuel

    seriously dude it was a total waste of 7.01 minutes..I was literally waiting for a perfect and to the point operation of EGR system which was missing. you just kept pondering upon one and the same thing, Instead of telling a story you should have only focus on its functionality...don't get me wrong but i'm trying to give you a followup which I guess will help you in future videos...thanks!

    So u got the cat transforming the gases (exost fumes ) environmental friendly ..why in the f u have to run the fumes back in the chambers. That's wher u get : 1 carbon build up , ,2 low engine performance, 3 is reducing the life of ur oil extremely (the carbon gose thru piston rings in the oil-thats wher black gunky oil comes from) 4 distroing the life of un engine (bad friction due bad oil mixed with carbon) etc So at 150000 look for other car allready . Imagine a clean fuel +oxygen mix, no trash in it . If u worried about environment ,put another cat converter in ther . Feel sorry for truck drivers , this system messing up theyr work and capital .I'm talking thousands spent in repair on that kind of "technology". Needs un update .
