    Fat 50's sound fuller and sweeter. I agonized over which pickups to get when I ordered my Strat from Fender. I'm very happy I chose the Custom shop Fat 50's. Some validation for me, not just wishful thinking they really do sound great and blew away the Fat 60's.

    FAT 50s are the sound that I prefer. The articulation for the neck pickup is what I have been missing using the gold Lace sensors on my '89 Strat Deluxe Plus. i listened to them with my eyes closed, not knowing which was which. gotta have both in my toolkit.
    1) Fat 50's starts with a pretty flat EQ when hit soft, and when it's hit hard the mids jump out beyond the bass and treble.
    Fat 50's has a brighter overall sound. ( Worked better for the clean stuff as expected)
    2) Fat 60's starts with a mid-scooped EQ when hit soft, and when it's hit hard the mids jump toward a flat EQ.
    Fat 60's has a more creamy and warm sound. (worked better for the overdriven sound, as expected.)
    If I had to pick one, I would go with the Fat 60's because my ears are sensitive to treble.

      @@MarceloDurham It's just like my brother say cucumber as 'oily and greasy', while my mom 'fresh and clean'. Just different words expression on the same thing. It's always arguing but 60's more mids sounds like softer and more mellow, in other words, a bit to vauge, muddy, compressed tone. And 50's less mids(clear highs and lows) sound obvious, clearer and bright. Some people call it as 'mellow', but I think it's better to express 'clear'. That's why 50s strat is widely known for its crystal clear clean and brighter tone, while 60s for darker, warmer and mellow. So you both feel similar in ears but just your words are different from what you focus on.

      That's my takeaway too. Got 'em (50's) in a few Strats and love 'em. Just can't believe they've doubled in price. I'm sure I'd like the 60's too. I think both Fender and Gibson get it right on pickups for their USA lines, and I think Fender's Mexi specialty and the vintage Squires (overseas) are excellent surprises. Heck, the Epiphone Pro-Buckers are very capable though if/when cranked heavy OD, loud amp, all of these can get a bit shrill. Clean, to light OD, they're all really good.

    The fat 50s is a much more robust and compressed sounding set of pickups, especially with a very tight sort of mids a bit reminiscent of Texas specials. @@MarceloDurham The 50's are definitely a step up, but so is the price. Not sure about prices in the US or elsewhere, but here they are 360$, which is a lot of money for a broke guy haha But yeah, I watched another comparison and after a bit of thinking it will be the 50's. The guitar receiving them is actually my first electric guitar that I managed to get back from selling it years ago. So a cheap Squire Affinity. But it will have all new electronics, stainless frets, new pickguard, tremolo, nuts, trees (if needed) and staggered tuning. It's only because it's my first one and so I think it deserves some special attention. It was all rusted and really dirty when I got it back.
      Anyways, thanks for the reply. :)

      @@MarceloDurham I like the 60s one, but no one’s selling a loaded pickguard and I don’t feel like soldering that much… You said you could be happy with the 60s and dial back the mids further down the signal chain… do you think I’d be happy with the 50s if I boosted the mids a little further down the signal chain? I just don’t want to go the the trouble of upgrading to the 50s and have ‘one that got away’ syndrome about the 60s ones. Literally the only comparison I’ve found is this video.

    • @williamnichols6253
      @williamnichols6253 Před 2 lety

      To clarify: the thing I like about the 60s one is the high e and b strings sounded less harsh to me when you played under the bridge. It’s possible the bite of the mids isn’t coming through as much on the video and I’d find out the hard way that I don’t like it as much as I thought I would.

    I like the fat 60's more. And respectfully i do not agree with your assessment about their frequency charts. I used logic to even check.
    1. Fat 50's quite definitely have more top end, they are brighter pickups
    2. Fat 50's have more upper mids (1khz to 3khz), so they "Scream" more and have that midrange-y spaciness
    3. Fat 60's have more lower mids attack (when you said in your video you get more attack) -- that bubbly type of pick attack is more on the fat 60's and i love that lots
    4. The fat 60's are the more modern sounding pickup, more compressed and more scooped sounding. The scoop in the middle mids to upper mids makes it much "cleaner" -- what i'm talking about is very obvious in the clean example you made at 5:20 - Fat 50's sound spacey and 1.5 khz-y, while the fat 60's sound totally scooped and bubble like.
