- Writer-director Emerald Fennell follows up her Oscar-winning "Promising Young Woman" with another social satire full of luscious style and biting wit. "Saltburn" finds Barry Keoghan's Oxford scholarship student ingratiating himself with an aristocratic classmate and his family at their sprawling estate for the summer. At the end, all that I wanted was a Poor Dear Pamela movie or short film 🤣🤣🤣🤣
We'd review it!
I’m so glad I found you guys again. I was feeling such a gap after I hadn’t seen What The Flick in a while. Glad to see Ben still joins here and there too!
We’re so glad you did too, welcome back!
The Talented Mr. Ripley is one of my favorite novels, and I liked both the Damon & Delon adaptations, so I definitely want to see this. Interesting to hear Christy say Barry is a vampire, because Mark Kermode called the whole film a vampire movie.
He's not literally a vampire 😄 But he is a predator. Let us know what you think!
This is one of my favorite films of the year. Sure it's pure thriller, but loved it just the same!
They're dead on. Younger people who haven't seen or read the many other stories that do this better will probably love this. For everyone else it's most likely not going to resonate as much if at all. Barry Keoghan is awesome as always though. Put that dude in everything.
I don’t think if I’ve even been mad at a movie 😅 but I’m mad at Alonso for not liking Promising Young Woman! I’m glad I didn’t know that at the time I saw that movie. I thought that was great. I love Rosamund Pike so I’ll watch this for her.
I mean how often does he actually like a movie!???
One thing about the reviews on this movie. My friend hadnt seen reviews - i saw the preview video with Ben and heard the "talented mr ripley" line for the review and its quite spoilerific as he had no idea. He thought the family was going to eat Barry Keoghan or do him harm and found the movie surprising. We had a great time. I almost wish I hadnt known the Talented Mr Ripley take before I saw this. so... there's that.
Good to know, thank you!
I haven't seen this yet, but I find the "we have seen this kind of film before" criticism to be used so selectively that it frustrates me when it is the main focus of discussion. There will be plenty of films released in Oscar season trying to do the same old thing that won't get targeted with that same criticism.
I agree. The film he mentions with Michael York and Angela Lansbury was 53 years ago!!!
I have seen it and i have seen this kind of film before.
Here’s the thing. This movie does something we’ve seen before, but with a redundant groan that doesn’t add anything to the conversation or elevate in anyway, like say Parasite did.
Sigh. Once i left LA, i never expected to miss the thrill of experiencing dissecting, and living in a place where cinema in all its richness and diversity sparks genuinely thoughtful conversations. Is Cinefile still open on Santa Monica blvd? Do they still show films ar Hollywood Forever? Until I can escape the Rust Belt, channels like this feed my lonely, nostalgic soul. Thank you ❤
The character of Oliver Quick is probably one of the greatest villains ever played in film !
Barry Keoghan reminds me of Joel Edgerton.
Yeah!
Long lost cousin
I'm looking forward to the spoiler talk to get in to the character motivations and actions!
It's up there now early for our channel members!
Just found your channel. Thank god you're back!!! 😊😍🎉
So glad you found us! You've got about five years of catch-up to do :)
Happy days!! 😂😂😂😍😍😍
I really enjoyed this film. I like my black comedy to be inky black. However, during THAT scene (I’m assuming you know that of which I speak) most of the (admittedly sparse) audience literally ran out of the theatre giggling hysterically. I loved it!
of course u did....
are you guys gonna review thanksgiving? i had a blast with it.
Have you watched the new French film "The Origin of Evil"? It just got a US theatrical release. It's also in that "interloper in a moneyed house" genre, but it had a lot of unexpected surprises. It left me pretty floored.
Rosamund Pike and Mulligan were both in An Education right.
I see the Patricia Highsmith influence with Barry's character simply by how he acts with his face.
Yes! Loved that movie, so stylish and it put Carey Mulligan on the map.
@@BreakfastAllDay Alfred Molina plays her dad in that. Both were in promising young woman. Strange how the movie circles work.
Finally caught up with this film and I enjoyed it, yes it’s familiar story but it’s directed and acted very well
Yes, a basic storyline. But great visually and great actors.
As someone who hadn't seen any of the other films mentioned, i still came out of Saltburn disappointed. It wasn't a bad film, just not really what i wanted. And for what it was, the execution left much to be desired. Was beautiful, though, and very well acted
I knew of Talented Mr Ripley but was so wrong about what it was about until i saw people comparing it to this. I watched it days later, and found it to be the better movie
When people mention "that scene" they really build it up as some moment, but it wasnt that crazy, it was just him slurping from a bathtub drain. Stranger things...
"Handsomely mounted," sure looks like there's gonna be lots of mounting form the trailer.
There's a lot of sexuality and some scenes but it doesn't go overboard. It's more about social tension, for me.
Haven't heard a review that makes me want to see this. Looking forward to Napoleon.
I kept thinking of “PARASITE,” while watching. The way he ingratiates himself into the family and home. And also “Ingrid Goes West.” The music is gorgeous. And cinematography is fascinating.
I saw this tonight with a very responsive crowd, ended up loving it.
How fun! Glad you enjoyed.
Unless the MC gets cut down to size by the end, perhaps literally, is the gorgeousness of the film worth it?
The Talented Mr Ripley with some Brideshead Revisited.
Just watched it. I agree with Alonso 100%.
Are you guys gonna review Dream Scenario by a24 cuz I'm actually kinda excited for that! I saw the trailer for it at Dicks The Musical and I just saw it comes out this weekend so I'm excited to see that. Hopefully its good!
Yep it'll be out later today!
woo hoo - the review that counts!
I have been illuminated by Christy as to the correct pronunciation of Barry Keoghan's name. There's a wide variety of answers when you Google it, but apparently the actor himself says it like Christy: Kee-oh-gan
I used to have a friend with the same name, and that’s how he pronounced it. Christy is normally good at pronouncing names correctly.
Spoiler talk is a MUST!!!!
Coming soon!
i just thought it was very poorly/confusingly paced and i think it totally unravels at the end, leaving nothing to really chew on
Jeez! There's not a single movie Alonso dislikes that I like and vice-versa! It bizarre, but I expect nothing different this time :D
Only counter argument to the maestro is sometimes old ideas need to be brought to a younger audience who may not have seen Talented Mr Ripley...but meah not strong enough:D Love you guys and still watching every Saturday!
Thank you, we're glad you're here! And Happy Saturday.
I'm soooo disappointed it's slated only for release on Amazon Prime here in France!!😫😣 BUT then they did finally release Promising Young Woman (LOVE LOVE LOVE that movie, not just "give it a pass", no!!🤦🏻♀) in theatres for a short time after it got nominated for an Academy Award, so cross fingers for this one too!! Mind you there's no way I'll wait until February next year to watch it in a cinema though, I guess I'll just have to watch it at home!! 🤷🏻♀
Let us know when you see it! This is a divisive one so we’ll be curious to hear your thoughts.
when on French Amazon prime?
@@andreitarkovsky3214 No date given yet just promised between Nov 24 and the end of the year
@@BreakfastAllDay FINALLY got to see it and I absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED it!!!!! It was sooooooo well caste with such awesome detail in the facial expressions AND dressing the set of every single scene, and of course Barry Keoghan was just "to die for"!!!😆 My jaw certainly dropped once or twice and I was definitely a giggler rather than a squirmer throughout!! As much as I loved it, I still think Promising Young Woman was more exceptional as a film, NOR does it reach the heights of The Talented Mr Ripley (one of my all-time favourites from one of my all-time favourite directors!!)
Sounds very much like Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl to me?
We have Napoleon & Saltburn starting at our humble cinema this weekend; after your discussion, guess which I'm gonna check out first? lol
Ha, let us know and report back!
Keoghan is one of my favorite actors and I am looking forward to this movie. Alonso mentioned Mr. Ripley, which I love, as a comparison so I am interested if Saltburn can match up which will be very tough.
You'll have to report back when you do!
Totally respect the two of you’s opinions and liked hearing the perspectives, but jeez! Hated this movie 😂
Oh no, why did you hate it?
Just based on the trailer that I saw yesterday, this movie looks like five other movies I've already seen. So I agree with Alonzo.
It isn't. So why not wait till you've seen it before you 'agree' with someone who has.
@@vaporwave4880 I'll pass. It looks derivative. This story has been told several times before. Just by this review, I can see Dangerous Liasion and The Talented Mr. Rieply.
It is like a mismash of about five other films, except that they are all way better. Interesting that it gets rave reviews from many although lots of people also hate it. The script feels like it was dashed off in an afternoon in the pub, there are several massive plot holes, a drive across half of England on country roads without the passenger noticing, dead bodies piling up and nobody thinking to ask why. Just a nasty and pointless movie, also predictable after about half way through, yet drags on for ages. Great acting it is true, but as they say the good bits are not original and the original bits are not good.
I think we found the next Superman, that dude is oozed with charisma and has the physique to be the man of steel.
After your take, am so ambivalent about this one. Love all the participating artists, and, forget about "Talented Mr. Ripley," any review that references "Something For Everyone" automatically has the interest up. And yet.....Will probably wait for streaming. Just saying. Thanks as ever, Christy and Alonso.
It's spectacular to watch, though, in case you guys can see it in the theater. Let us know!
@@BreakfastAllDay Style over substance, an inchoate, unexamined property, and just try to look away. Mr. Keoghan is fearless, Mr. Elordi is lustrous, Ms. Pike steals it. Though I didn't exactly love it, it was a perverse blast in its show-offy way. Thanks as always, C & A.
I absolutely loved this film!! ❤
Lol. Christy did a British accent. I never heard her do one.
Ha, not sure how great it is 😆
It validates me so much that Alonso didn’t like this movie. I hated it. It was sexy and beautifully shot, but terrible plot and dialogue.
I don't mind if it's literally a Mr Ripley rip-off but if Felix and Oliver actually became a couple then I'd be hooked on it. I mean only for that last scene...nah! Shock factor, nah!
I loved it saw it at a screening the other night with a packed house. I do understand Alonso's talking about familar territory and i have seen Talented Mr Ripley. But i enjoyed the screenplay the acting the themes explored
Were there any graphic vomit scenes? sorry i know that’s a weird question
@@theunseen3 no.
Saltburn: A Mesmerizing Satire of Wealth and Extravagance, Fennell's Masterpiece Delivers a Visual and Emotional Feast
I just saw Emerald Fennell's latest movie, "Saltburn," and wow, it's an absolute knockout! A modern Great Gatsby! This film's visual richness & script brilliantly satirizes Oxford/British wealth and extravagance while uncovering the depths of its characters in a way that's just captivating. It's like watching a train wreck you can't turn away from, with each scene revealing more about what's really going on.
The acting is across the board truly top-notch - absolutely one of the best ensemble performances I've seen this year.
Rosamund Pike is phenomenal, and Alison Oliver shines bright. Carey Mulligan's cameo? Simply unforgettable. And Barry Keoghan? He's outdone himself, delivering a performance that's bound to get Oscar buzz.
What really struck me was how the film takes themes that might seem repulsive on the surface and turns them into a mesmerizing display of artistry. The aesthetics, acting, and writing all come together perfectly, making even the most grotesque scenes somehow relatable. That bathtub scene? It had me feeling a mix of emotions I still can't quite explain.
The tone of the movie is dark but compelling, with every cast member bringing their A-game. And the score? Absolutely majestic. Fennell has outdone herself with this one. After this and "Promising Young Woman," I'm convinced I'll watch anything she directs.
I'm also betting on Oscar nominations for Production Design and Costume Design. And a special shoutout for including "Murder on the Dancefloor" in the soundtrack - that song was my jam in elementary school!
The movie is a rollercoaster of emotions - it's funny, dark, twisted, and utterly captivating. I found myself laughing, gasping, and even shrieking alongside everyone else in the theater. Fennell's unique and inventive approach really shines, making "Saltburn" a film that begs for multiple viewings. As a movie lover, I left the cinema completely amazed and satisfied. For anyone who loves cinema, this is a must-watch. Emerald Fennell has really cooked up something special with "Saltburn."
Alonso, you didn't like Promising Young Woman??? That movie was a liberation for women!
The film aside, the biggest takeaway from this is Christy does an impressive upper-class English accent.
I enjoyed this up to a certain point towards the end which involved a car journey. Up to that point Barry Keoghan's character was our eyes and ears in this world of ostentatiousness and decadence and casual cruelty. We watched him as he negotiated himself through this world. I was always interested in how he tried to weasel his way around this family. But the movie casts him adrift in the final twenty minutes and I just didn't care anymore.
The ending spells out way too much. But we'll get to that in our spoiler video!
Without that final 20 minutes his actions up to that point don't make sense
@@Leo31291 But we can figure out for ourselves what he's been up to, right? We go into this in our spoiler review, which is up for our members now and we'll make public soon!
Based on Fish Jelly spoilers, will skip this one.
This is up there with one of my favourite movies of the year. I made me 180 my position on Barry Keoghan (who I didnt quite get in KOASD). Fab movie and possibly top10 for the year. Incredible work 9/10
Rosamund pike and cRey mulligan..they shud have had more screen time..they were awesomeee
Both are indeed awesome!
If you liked the peach scene in Call Me By Your Name, this movie has at least three moments to rival that wtf-ery. I liked this better than Promising Young Woman, but that's quite a low bar. All the performances are excellent, but for a movie that's going so hard to seduce and scandalize its audience, the story is way too familiar (aside from those three bonkers moments).
Ha, that's a good analogy. The peach scene is meant to be tender, though, while those three scenes are indeed WTF 😆
I just finished watching this movie and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I thought all of the performances were great I felt that the movie ran a bit long and wasn't sure what it wanted to say about people like this.
I was so disappointed! It wasn’t half as shocking as promised
I feel the same. It was pretty predictable. I love the movie. But I definitely seen this before and the talent to Mr. Ripley.
I don't like the actor Barry Keoughen also that other guy from Euphoria, so I wasn't going to watch it, but I do like Emerald's other movie and Rosemund Pike. So I'm conflicted, came for the review to see if I should waste my time.
Ha, and have you decided that you should?
@@BreakfastAllDay Yes, the Talented Mr Ripley was better and more believable. There is no way that kid would have walked off with that estate. The previous owner was Knighted, old money, the family that was left would have contested, and there would have been some sort of investigation into the poisoning. It's just not that believable. However Rosemund Pike's performance was excellent per usual and the other actors. Barry running around being a sociopath was better than his sociopath in Killing of a Sacred Deer. I guess that he's been pigeonholed for that type of role. Thank goodness for the other supporting actors that can actually act.
Is it a spoiler if you mention The Talented Mr Ripley? I haven’t seen the trailer, but your discussion is not helping me with the excitement for this movie…😂😂😂. Besides being good looking and some shock value, I am not hearing much. I expected Alonzo to give it a 5 or something…
This is one of the few movies where you are on the rich people side cause all they did was be nice to oliver
The Favourite teas
So to summarize your two perspectives:
I think I’ve seen this film before
And I didn’t like the ending
?
Well we said a lot more than that. But thanks for watching.
A 2023 Version of the Talented Mr. Ripley just weirder. Hated it! Just seen it on Prime.
Me, too. The final act (or two) undid whatever I might've liked along the way. Solid cast, though.
Project X with british rich people?
I saw this movie and just like "Promising Young Woman" it fell apart in the 3rd act for me. And just like that movie's tonal shift it undid the film for me.
Agreed, the Story isn't the most original and has been done before in several variations.
But if that is a major flaw for a film then we have to discount 98.7% of all movies. Very few movies have actually new ideas or stories. Or at least interesting new story fragment recombinations.
Most movies are good enough to exist just based on the writing, cast, cinematography, tone. soundtrack or any combination thereof.
Looking forward to the spoiler review.
I'll take a fresh version of a story done a few times before (decades ago) over the 28th movie in the MCU any day
Very good point! Do you plan on seeing this?
@@BreakfastAllDay I saw it today and really enjoyed it.. it is a bit more style than substance but oh what style!
@@84paratize Glad you saw it! Thanks for sharing.
99% agree with Alonso - if women directors are going to claim greatness by copying previous great films by male directors, then it is hardly going to further their cause...if they have one. Talented Mr Ripley was all over it, which meant that the supposed surprises when they finally revealed themselves were telegraphed almost from the beginning by the comparison. The 'gross' scenes did nothing to progress the storyline, and seemed to be more a test of how far an actor would go to prove their artistic credentials. This film was not for me, purely because I had seen what I wanted to see, before, and the rest were scenes I didn't want to see. Where I disagree with Alonso is that I AM mad with this movie, it wasted over 2 hours of my life.
It’s my favorite of the year. Left the theater absolutely gobsmacked
Great! What did you love about it?
@@BreakfastAllDay I had not seen Mr Ripley or known this had similarities, nor did i see a trailer, so i mainly loved the ride it took me on. I always felt like i was in capable and bold hands. I liked how it challenged me as a filmgoer to spend time with a character this odd, this complex, and find out what exactly it is he is up to. The whole cast is wonderful, i thought the script is clever (especially if you go in blind) and it’s absolutely strikingly beautiful as well. Style and substance boing together wonderfully for 2 hours leading to an audacious ending that you just can’t look away from. Feels like the best parts of Ingrid Goes West, Parasite and Joker. Most jazzed i’ve left a film in years.
Really surprised Alonso didn’t like this or “Promising Young Woman”. I loved both movies. But as I always say, art is subjective.
Spoilers ahead. Promising Young Woman was much better than Saltburn. While both controversial, at least Carey Mulligans' character did her revenge tour without hurting anyone or killing anyone. Also, the guy who killed her did not get away with it at the end. In Saltburn, Barry Keoghans' character was just a mentally ill (in a violent, manipulative, destructive way) and he got away with killing at least three family members. I am hoping Fennells' third movie is closer to Promising Young Woman than Saltburn.
This is such a weird movie about obsession
Lol you guys have been disagreeing a lot lately
Whenever they disagree, go with Christy except for The Marvels. She must have been in a really bad mood that day.
Siskel and Ebert were the gold standard. Neither got it right (historically) every time, but the differences only made the reviews better.
@@sawyer33 i respect and enjoy both their perspectives and the reviews weren't far apart when it came to their scores. This one interests me and I haven't heard anyone compare it to Brideshead Revisited... it definitely gives me vibes of an update of that
@@cirugo7042 I was just joking around. I like them both a lot but Christy’s prettier. 🙈
@@sawyer33 no worries... i got that
Hmm, loved Promising woman - not as keen on this one x
There are no original ideas, there is nothing new under the sun. Alfonso is going to have to let go of expecting something that isn’t familiar. It’s all familiar. Especially if you watch film for a living. You can find something derivative in every single movie being made today. It’s really just a cop out to say it’s familiar or been done before when it’s all been done before.
But honestly, this was a very familiar. Very. Almost predictably familiar.
Jacob Elordi gives me lost soul tea. Like when I see him I see Jacob Elordi, I don’t see a chameleon actor. He would do great being a host like Ryan Seacrest.
SPOILER: Loved everything until it shows everything that Quick did to get what he wanted. Should have left that out.
We agree (and did a whole separate spoiler talk on this topic!).
I really liked it until the ending “twist” which i hated and felt it undermined his entire character and sorta contradicted a lot of the good will that was built up through the movie.
Plus it over explains everything ... which we'll over explain in our spoiler chat soon 😄
Alfonso is spot on here, Promising Young Woman SUCKED. This movie was ok but so simple & obvious.
THIS MOVIE IS HORRENDOUS!!!!!!
IT IS A GOOSEBUMPS VERSION OF MR. RIPLEY.
OBVIOUS, ON THE NOSE AND THE PROTAGONIST LACKS APPEAL AND A COMPELLING MOTIVATION.
THE ENDING IS AN AMWAY TRAINWRECK.
SHOCK WITHOUT PURPOSE ISN'T SHOCK AT ALL.
IT IS LIKE A ZOOMERS GUIDE TO CRUEL INTENTIONS.

Awesome perfect review
Couldn't stand this. Emerald Fennell is far too mediocre a writer and director to be this self-satisfied giving us The Talentless Mr. Ripley.
Every "squirm or giggle" moment just resulted in a groan.
You were in the wrong cinema
@@TheCazz10 Well I’m talking about my own reactions, not of those around me. So the cinema I saw it in wouldn’t have made any difference I assure you.
@thefilmseeker I am with you. Fennel is a parade of mediocrity. Mr Ripley is a factually well done film. Can't stand the comparison. God...like does she have the patience and restraint (or talent) to actually create some longing? No she does not..she just throws cum at the screen to scream THIS IS LONGING at the audience who should be insulted not by the "debauchery" (oh, please...give me PSH's Freddie Miles every day instead of these boring people) but by the laziness of the thing. This versus the chess scene in Ripley. The chess scene, the train scene, the jazz scenes.
I paid to watch this film because you talked it up.
Worst thing I have EVER seen.
Unsubscribed.
Emerald >>>>Gerwig. In my opinion
Sacrilege! Gerwig has made at least 1 good movie, which is already a step above Fennell.
@@thefilmseekerwait a minute by my count Gerwig has made 3 great movies and Fennell has made 1 amazing film and this one was just great too
@@65g4 I said AT LEAST 1 movie that is, at minimum, good. Which puts her ahead of Fennell, who’s made 0.
@@thefilmseeker thats your opinion
Emerald can be fun, but you my friend have no taste. ;)
I'm in the same boat as Alonzo when it comes to Promising Young Woman. That movie was so overrated and most likely because it feeds the hunger of woke feminazis. Fennell is also overrated.
The terms you use like woke and feminazis clearly show a bias pre-viewing it. I’m on the other end but would still say it’s not a good movie.
