- I’ve been asked many times to make a Meiji Restoration video. But this does not agree with my personal sentiment. I am a monarchist, and also believe in ancient traditions. The Meiji Restoration was in parts great, since it made Japan into an Empire. But it also paved the way for the ’’Zaibatsu’’ and overall greedy view of the world. A materialistic worldview, which acts to destroy all other virtues. I believe in monarchy, but not at any prize. The reforms by the great scoundrel Toshimichi Okubo didn’t only abolish century long system of Japan, it even went so far as to humiliate anyone being part of this class (just as communism) making it illegal for Samurai to even wear swords. The Emperor was used as a tool. I personally view the Meiji restoration as a both good and bad thing. But mostly bad, since it did never give any real power to the Emperor. Unlike the attempts of Showa Restoration, which were pure. The Meiji ’’restoration’’ simply formed an oligarchy with the Emperor as a symbol to keep the realm stable and having seeming legitimate and. The Emperor simply acted as an excuse to put in a system of capitalism and materialism which was essentially foreign from the national essence.

Modernity is the *Rebuttal and Refusal* of Feudalism, a "modern" Samourai is an oxymoron. It can never happen, because he is no longer needed and is perceived by most of its pairs as crazy fool or deranged dreamer...
Post-Modernity has to be surpassed ! And we shouldn't cling to old Dark ages , but try to go to the Edges.

@@darksidedeltaI agree with you. However, when I mention Modernization, I'm not referring to metaphysic but rather physical one.
I believe it's possible to have samurai alongside modernization. This can be evident through tribal tradition in Borneo especially the Dayaks which they retain traditions alongside modernization.
@@darksidedelta You might heard of this. But in my opinion, there must be Hellenization just like the Hellenistic Age where any form of foreign culture can be hellenized to another culture as long as it won't diminished the original culture but rather strengthen it against the Modern culture.

Curious how the satsuma rebellion itself led Japanese society in the 1920s to a greater form of patriotism.
I think the period of late Meiji era and the Taishō Democracy was a truce between the modernizers and the old classes, if we look at all of the uprisings from late 20s to 1936 they were all inspired by the Satsuma Rebellion (among numerous other) rebellions from the 1870s/80s.
But in the end the nation of Japan lost its identity for a form of patriotism that wasn’t sustainable

Some scenes are from "Last Samurai" (2003) a fictionalized depiction of the Satsuma rebellion in 1877 of Shogunat Samurai against the Meiji government
A lot of it was the Last Samurai which is a pretty good movie from 20 years ago.

Yes, and that the Americans still today occupy Japan. Only these last days there was a huge scandal about r*pe against the inhabitants of Okinawa by American sailors which they tried to hide - and its been going on since the war ended.
