  • The Republic of Benin historically, was the seat of a great empire, the kingdom of Dahomey and later became French Dahomey as a French colony. It was not until 1975 that the name was changed to Benin after the Bight of Benin. In the 17th century, the region was known as the Slave Coast due to the number of slaves shipped off from there. So what are the major ethnic group that make up this nation and how are they different from one another? watch?

Thanks for the great info here! But they're several ethnic groups in North Benin that are not described here. The natemba, the ditamari, the beriba, the wama...etc

Great video! There are several questions I would like to ask as a follow up to the information you presented:
    1) Are the Adja people a mixture of Yorubas with the local ethnic groups in Tado?
    2) Are the Fon people a mixture of the Adja ethnic group with the Gedevi?
    3) Are the Gedevi people in Benin the same as the Igede people in Nigeria?
    4) Who are the Gbe ethnic group you mentioned? I thought Gbe was a catch term for the Fon, Ewe, Adja, Gun, Xwla, and other ethnic groups who spoke related languages. I always thought the term was similar to the usage of Romance languages from French, Spanish, Italian, etc.
    5) This isn't a question, more of a follow up - I noticed there were two main ethnic groups you didn't mentioned - the Gun people and the Xwla people.
    6) Did Benin get its name from the Benin Empire of Nigeria, after Oba Akenzua II granted permission to the President of Dahomey at the time?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks for doing this video once again!!

I’ll help you answer of some of those questions:
Adjas are not mixed with Yoruba. They are the ones that created the Ewe and Fon groups. After they left tado,Togo they moved into Benin and intermixed with the gedevis aka Yorubas.
Gbe ppl are: Fon, Ewe, Adja, Goun (Gun/Egun) and extra.

Sika Abbey Thanks for the response!
As a follow up, since Adjas speaks of traveling from Ketu, were they the original habitants of Ketu before being pushed out by the Yorubas (Oyo empire)?
Also did Togbui Anyi introduce IFA(Vodun/Orisha) to the Adjas in Tado? Was he Yoruba himself?

    • @sikaabbey8307
      @sikaabbey8307 Před 3 lety +6

Well I am Ewe/Fon. So according to the history that were to us, the gbe speaking ppl are from Ile-Ife, Nigeria. This is where they learned IFA from. Upon leaving Ile-Ife the Adja’s settled in Tado,Togo. But than there was a King that died/ 3 had sons that wanted to take over his thrown in Tado. The 3 sons thought over land and etc..Eventually they all decided to go out their separate ways to form their own settlements. 1 son went to Benin and founded Adjachè. The other also went to Benin and founded Abomey. The third I believe founded Ouidah or if not I think went west of Togo. So the Adjas that left Tado,Togo are the ones that intermarried with the yorubas and thus creates the Fon tribe. additionally there were some Adjas that went to West of Tado...In Notché,Togo they became what we now call Ewes. So essentially, Adja,Ewe and Fons are all the same ppl. Hopefully someone else can also give you more info or a different perspective.

Sika Abbey 👍🏾 I’m Haitian and I have an entire side of my family that practices Haitian Vodou. This is why this stuff is so interesting to me.
Is Adja(or Ewe or Fon) language similar to Yoruba language in terms of grammar and root words and even sound? Or are they completely different?
Also the story you mentioned where the King in Tado died with his 3 sons fighting for the throne...are you referring to the 3 Agasuvis who founded Dahomey, Arada (Allada), and Adjache (Porto Novo)?

Dahomey is name republic of benin not really because of the bight of Benin that they name the country the republic of benin. It is the ancestral connection of the people of benin in nigeria and the Oba Akenzua (Benin Empire-Nigeria) in 1975 gave them the blessing to have the empire name extended to them as the republic of benin. And of course the bight of benin is name after the benin empire of nigeria!!!!!
