- Welcome to this weeks woodturning video! Thank you for watching!
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a large chunk of apple wood from a tree that came down due to bad weather.

Great Bowl. The warping from drying gives it that extra character.
TBH, I had no idea apple trees could grow to be that size.
Neither did I
Nice bowl. I agree with the other comments you need to bolt down your lathe or get a bag of cement,
Nice projecr, nice work on a lively lathe. Love the shirt. Er du Norske?
You do a good job but you should tell us what you are doing and the reason. It makes it so much more interesting. Also what tools you use and why. Keep up the good job.
Thanks for the suggestions 🙌 always looking for new things to add into my videos
Very nice bowl but you need to bolt down your lathe.
Beautiful grain, thanks for sharing. Full View and Like 👍
Legend 🙌
Why did you choose to leave it misshapen? Most turners choose to return after the drying process. No egg shaped bowls.
I don’t often get the chance to wet turn wood and let it warp, so when I do I go for the maximum amount of warping that I can get from it :)
Very nice. I assume it was wet? it would be drying as you turned it which will also affect the balance. Pity you were not able to core it?
Yes this piece was freshly cut and still had a lot of moisture. Didn’t know that it would affect the balance as it dried on the lathe, you learn something new everyday :) currently saving up for a way to core out bowls
Hi, nice bowl. Is that the AP350WL lathe? I just bought one.
Thanks 🙏 yes it is :) let me know how you get on with it
I have got the Axminster 406 it really is a lovely lathe, I just purchased the bed extension, that’s a beautiful looking bowl
I notice your lathe is moving a lot. Both at the beginning when the blank is very unbalanced and later when you’re removing the inside material when the piece should be balanced. Rocking back and forth obviously. If the lathe moves, then your subject moves with it and the tool rest, while you are not moving and the gouge you’re holding isn’t moving. Impossible to achieve a smooth cut and finish with your tool in this condition. Leveling the feet on your lathe will make a huge difference, the anchoring the feet to the floor will help more. Assuming your floor is solid. Another trick is to add ballast. Perhaps attach a shelf to the lower legs then load the shelf with weights. I enjoyed seeing you work on apple wood. It’s one of my favorites to turn, and the wood itself is quite hard and durable. It isn’t often seen on other videos. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for these ideas to make it smoother 👌 annoyingly I turn in a small shed with a flexible floor and even with my lathe bolted down and weights added it still wobbles the same :( upgrading soon 🙏
Try some lumber under the legs that is thick and will not flex. Set it up so it bridges the floor joist .Make sure that lumber starts and ends on a floor joist. I would suggest something that is 2" X 8" at least. @@HenryKeateCarpentry.
Every single piece you turn has it's own unique character especially this one. Well done👍🏻
Thanks I appreciate it :)
