Next time trainee when you're backing under your trailer and your 5th wheel isn't lower than the front edge of your trailer (some drivers may crank the landing gear down to much when dropping trailers so you have to be aware of that), lower your airbags as you're backing and disengage your HSA (Hill Start Assistant) until you hear the kingpin latch and the tractor will back under the trailer much smoother and you won't remove all the grease on your 5th wheel plate . .

The tractor does not have to be straight with trailer for the doors to close. With some of the older trailers, any type of non-flat ground can throw off the center of mass making it not close properly. The tractor has nothing to do with it.
Also, lifting up on the handle can make the difference.

@TwiztedD I've hauled many dry vans & reefer over my 20 of driving truck. In my experience, 99% of all van trailers, reefer or dry, will close regardless but there's always that odd older trailer that doesn't want to close without a fight. I haul for the largest grocery retailer in Canada and haul both dry goods, fresh loads and frozen. My reefer malfunctioned the other day. The frozen load was set to -10 but with the temperature outside, the malfunction and multiple drops close together, when I left my second last call the reefer temp was up to +43.5°. I managed to fix it though. Good thing I only had 4 skids left on the trailer. Lol.

Being cocky will do this to the lucky ones. And rookies like me. I always get a visual on the locking jaw when I hook up a trailer. I just knew intuitively to look. My former co-driver did the tug test once to this trailer. Finished hooking everything else up. Drove a few feet. And the trailer almost completely slid off the 5th wheel. So yeah. I always get a visual.

You told him “you kind of messed up the setup a lot”, but proceeded to let him back up without resetting again. But earlier you said we’re creatures of habit and learn by doing things the right way. So wouldn’t having him reestablish the setup have been the best way for him to learn? Because you ended up redoing the set up anyway, vice allowing him to learn from his error?

    • @TwiztedD

I’ve had my cdl for about 3years. I have not driven a semi and trailer since class. I’ve been driving a ‘99 international T440 dump truck for my current job in waste water. Only reason I haven’t made the jump to Otr is I keep being told I won’t make much my first year, after running some numbers with what I’ve seen people post videos online whom work for some big company’s, like Swifty, it’s less than what I’m making now, for the first year. I’m struggling penny to penny now with taking care of my two kids. Question for those just getting started; what is a close estimate of y’all’s weekly pay after taxes and truck expenses if any? Thank you.

It’s a lot easier to screw up when you have someone breathing over your shoulder telling you what to do and how to do what. Good on this guy for staying focused when his trainer could have just said, “drop this and swap to the trailer on your left”. I mean, they teach this to you when you get your CDL, so if you need to be told afterwards you probably shouldn’t be driving. That being said… I’ve discovered that a lot of these new guys still have to be told which is kinda sad.

I don't know how it is for anyone else but for me Backing up recently used gotten better to get the out of the way. Here's a way to look at the trailer like a car and the tractor is the front wheel. Guiding you the trailer to the spot you What. Just imagine the tractor being in the front wheel. Which way would that tractor go in order to guide yourself back in?. That's what it reminds me of just pretend it's. The front wheel the tractor. And it should theoretically guide you new year's direction you want to go... Where are you can use some old-timers trick? Lining your tangams up with The mark's from previous Tandem tracks or you can use the glove method or cone or something that you can reference off of.. It worked for me. I didn't know about the trailer tire marks at the docks line them. Up? Never thought that till somebody said something about that make sense. it kind of takes the guessing workout. But get out and look Is always going to be there unsure feel uneasy whatever the wind blowing the wrong way? Get out look don't take that chance. Sorry for the confusion my phone likes to switch words around as soon as I send it. I don't know why that is.. And when I looked at it when I sent it did not say innocent or any missed build words that may have confused you.. It's just Samsung can't spell and loves loves to switch it around. Small hand signals, trying to talk to the driver from the back of the truck, vague "this way / that way" instead of "clockwise / counter clockwise", just put a glove on the ground and tell him to run it over instead of adding more vague directions.....I haven't even gotten to the dropped trailer part yet but I bet you frustrated tf out of him and that's why it happened.
