  • Full photographic and video detail of work undertaken during a recent gas meter move enforced by Cadent Gas on 29th March 2022 along with the response from Gas Safe Register regarding the leak. The original meter position was deemed unsafe by Cadent despite being in its existing setup since prior to 2002 without any gas leaks, issues or cause for concern yet they enforced the move at their own cost and caused a risk to life in the process.
The gas leak was repaired on 3rd April 2022 by an Emergency Engineer. It went unnoticed for 5 days with gas escaping through air bricks into the property and the boiler being switched on remotely, if gas had built up enough this could have caused an explosion. Remedial work to correct the Meter Box and Earth bonding took place 7th May 2022.
Cadent paid out £100 in compensation for gas lost through the leak and inconvenience.
In my opinion a Gas safe registered business is absolutely no indication of competence or safety working with gas. It certainly wasn’t in this instance.
As of 26th August 2022, we still do not know how the leak managed to get left behind, whether the engineer did a gas tightness test at all and if he did why he felt it was safe to leave leaking. ‪@GasSafeRegister‬ have confirmed that the engineer responsible for the majority of this work including leaving the leak is still on the register and therefore likely working with gas. He is also still listed as working for Cadent. Meaning work just like this could be coming to a home near you.
There has also been no explanation as to why it’s acceptable for what is supposed to be a competent engineer drilling additional holes in gas meter boxes, making hinges out of electrical cable ties and deliberately lying about Earth bonding cable being under 10mm. Cowboys would do better!
9th September 2022, after an email from ‪@stephaniepeacock428‬ MP’s team who kindly offered to help :
I am writing to follow up on your email of last week. I have investigated the issue raised by your constituent and wanted to provide you with further information.
First, I want to apologise, as it appears that the standard of work originally undertaken on your constituent’s property fell short of what we would expect. As soon as this was raised, we rectified the work and brought it up to standard.
As a result of this incident, we undertook a thorough investigation, to understand why the original work was below standard and to make sure this issue is not repeated.
Whilst I am unable to comment on specifics around employment and HR matters, for reasons of privacy, I want to assure you that as a result of this investigation we have acted to ensure that a situation such as this cannot happen again.
I am very sorry that your constituent faced this issue, but I hope this response reassures you that we have acted promptly and taken the concerns raised seriously.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me on the details below.
    Best regards,
    Arnie Craven

Hiding behind privacy laws, not explaining how or why it happened or taking full responsibility and regardless we are still left with messy pipework inside the property. It’s a bit more than work ‘falling short of what we would expect’ when when the standard of that work could have killed someone!.
