Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach Responds to Accusations of Abuse Toward Adam James

- At the height of the 2009 College Bowl Season, Texas Tech University shocked the sports world when it announced that head coach Mike Leach would be fired. The announcement came amidst allegations that Leach had abused sophomore wide receiver Adam James (son of ESPN analyst and former SMU standout Craig James) by confining him to a dark electrical closet at the team's workout facility. James, who had sustained an apparent concussion, complained that his health was placed in jeopardy. The timing of this decision prevented Leach from coaching the Red Raiders one day before their Alamo Bowl appearance costing him $800,000 in signing bonus pay. In this video, Leach appears on ESPN to defend against the allegations.

UT guy here. Texas-Texas Tech week in the 2000s was always entertaining because you could always count on a few one liners from Mike Leach. The Tech admin and Craig James really did him wrong. Leach was one of the brightest minds in college football, yet he seemed like an approachable guy. Truly a gem and I miss him being around.

Biggest DAMN mistake this university has ever made concerning the football program. Thanks to the board of regents and Kent Hance the Tales of The Crypt guy who fabricated at Tale to fire Leach just cause he out smarted them on his contract negotiations. This is one reason why I will never buy tickets to another football game until they pay the man the money he rightfully deserves.

Iam still mourning. I been following Mike since he was there at Texas Tech. I beleive every signal word Coach was saying. I know Coach is streight up!!!. Mike is also a attorney and had a Masters degree.. F Texas Tech. They ought to be ashamed. Had a great Coach and eventually would have won a National Championship. Has any coach had as good of a record as Leach did? No. But success can be measured a lot of ways. It’s not like Leach ever won a championship.

For an uncultured swine like myself, what actually happened in this situation? Did Leach actually lock the kid in the shed or was that a lie? Sounds like he got screwed but I really want to know all the details.
No, what happened was Adam James showed up to a practice claiming he had a concussion. Leach conferred with the trainer, Steve Pincock, and he told Pincock to put him somewhere dark and quiet to avoid any injury and also him being a distraction to the team. The so called shed is as big as a 2 car garage and the Tech linemen take their practice breaks there. It also has an Ice Machine and a water fountain along with a vending machine.

Its in Leach's book, Swing your Sword. The kid makes a video on his phone while he's in this closet or something as a joke and says something along the lines like, look at where they got me, this is what they do to me....that type of stuff. But the Tech administration actively screwed Leach around, with officials overstepping lines and boosters calling shots. Ultimately it was about the 800k Leach was owed. They just used this to get rid of him. When Leach says he suspects its about money, he was right. Also, i think it was Craig James that hired a media company that actively went on forums and wherever else, trying to flip the script and push out essentially what happens today: false allegations and reporting. Can't remember the name, but this company seems to have specialized in that stuff.

what happened is that adam james showed up to practice with sunglasses on and said he had a doctors note that said he had to wear them because his eyes couldnt be exposed to direct sunlight, and coach said you arent wearing sunglasses at practice, so if you have to wear them go into the equipment 'shed'. The 'shed', when it was shown, was a place where they stored multiple vehicles(i cant remember if it was golf carts or riding lawnmowers) and it was more like an airplane hangar than a shed. Oh and it was air conditioned. Craig James got on espn and made it seem like his boy was treated like a vietnam POW, and they run leach outta lubbock. Its never been referenced on espn again cuz they and everybody else with a brain knows how badly mike leach got screwed.
When I think of all the narcissist entitled coaches that continue to bail on programs/players, that continue to breathe, Mike’s loss hurts all the more…🥺

Not really. He got screwed by Texas Tech because they didn't want to pay him his contract, but he's had five losing seasons out of nine he's coached since being there. Lost to multiple FCS level teams while at Washington State. That's not good. Never won a league championship or finished in the top ten in 20-plus seasons. He picks off a win or two against a good team here and there, gets a ton of publicity for it, and that's it. Has some funny lines and gets a lot of hype. Good for him. Top schools aren't beating down his door or they would have already gotten him.
@@e2go Other schools would take him in a heartbeat. His record is 141-95 at major schools, won more games at TTU than any previous coach there, and third most wins at WSU.
@@e2go You are an ignoramus. Leach won the Pac 12 North in 2018 and the Big 12 South when it was at it's absolute best in 2008. He has coached 5 Heisman Candidates (Kingsbury, Symons, Harrell, Crabtree, Garner Minshew). His first 3 years at WSU it took him time to rebuild an AWFUL Wazzu Program. First 3 years he was 12-25 with one Bowl appearance, His last 5 years his record was 43-22 and went to 5 straight bowl games, and won the Alamo Bowl in 2018 and finished 10th in the coaches poll, and was PAC 12 coach of the year twice. At Tech he never had a losing season, and like at WSU, his last 5 years was his best stretch going 46-18 and finished in the top 20 5 of his last 6 years. He has taken 17 of the 19 teams he has coached to bowls. It is going to take some time but he will get Miss State up and going. They have a culture problem and he is going to address that this offseason. He has also been interviewed by Auburn, Tennessee, and Washington, and some others. Know what you are talking about before you look stupid.
Leach never stays anywhere long. His ego wears on a school after a few years.

I never followed the story until now but wow, that was embarrassing. I like leach even more now. I assume the James family has never been back or is welcome in Lubbock right? Side note as well, it is very impressive what texas tech did at that time going against the rest of texas and oklahoma schools recruiting wise. Obviously hindsight is 20 20 but they clearly jumped the gun and have paid for it since.

Why didn't they just drop the player from the program if he was this much of a mess? In today's world, the player could have transferred to a lesser program for more playing time. And the coach would hit the transfer portal for a cpl more players at that position so the writing would be on the wall.
